Convert old 35mm film strips and slides to digital copies using your existing digital camera and macro lens. The Vello NDS-35 works with most Nikon, Canon, and Sony cameras along with select macro lenses. Instead of buying a whole scanner, just use your full-frame camera and capture a 1:1 digital reproduction that lasts forever.

A bright and dimmable LED light source provides the illumination the camera needs to capture all the details of the 35mm film being photographed. The light also acts as a stand-alone negative viewer with a kickstand so it can be set up on a flat surface, making it easy to scrutinize each slide. The cool-running LED light operates with any 5W USB power supply, available separately. A diffusion panel is also included if using an alternate light source is desired.

The power control cable offers tactile buttons that make it easy to adjust the light's brightness, so you don't have to take your eye off the camera while changing settings.

A film strip carrier secures 35mm film strips up to six frames long, and a slide carrier holds two mounted slides at a time, making it easy to move from one slide to the next without damaging the film. Quickly shoot and move to the next picture in one session.

Six lens adapters make it easy to mount the digitizer onto a macro lens. Choose between 46, 49, 52, 55, 58, 62, and 67mm lens adapters to match a variety of lenses for macro shooting.

Getting film negatives in focus is the priority when shooting a digital copy. Use a combination of the included extensions to lengthen or shorten the focus distance, so every image is sharp.

A pair of connectors allow the LED light panel to easily attach to the film strip holder, holding it at the perfect distance for even illumination. The modular set can then be disassembled for compact storage.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this fit the Sony 90mm macro lens?

A: The Vello NSD-35 35mm Negative and Slide Digitizer comes with a 62mm filter adapter that fits the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens. Technically it should work but it has not been tested with that lens and Sony cameras.

Q: 2. How many holders are in a package for $19.95? One or two or more? Do these holders work with Plustek 8200i SE?

A: It comes with 2 holders for 35mm mounted transparency (slide) film. They are compatible with Plustek 8200i SE.

Q: 3. Where do I get the developing times for this film?

A: The manufacturer has instruction on how to find developing times on their website at the bottom of the page here: https://bit.ly/3fO6SOX

Q: 4. How are slides held in place? In the photo it appears that there are spring loaded covers, one per slide but I can't really tell.

A: There is a spring loaded slot that retains two opposing edges of each slide. You gently push one edge of the slide into the spring loaded slot from the opposing edge, then push down on the free edge while allowing the spring to push the free edge of the slide under two retaining clips. You remove the slide from the holder by re-compressing the spring from the edge under the retaining clips then pulling that edge away from the mount It is quite easy to do and very secure. It works for cardboard mounts and most plastic mounts. Some mounts with cover glass are too thick to slide into the slot.

Q: 5. Will the NSD-35 work with a Pentax 100mm macro (49mm filter)?

A: The Vello NSD-35 35mm Negative and Slide Digitizer does have a 49mm adapter ring to mount on that lens. It also includes several extension tubes to place the digitizer at the minimum focusing distance.

Q: 6. Can these be used for DSLR scanning? Do they have a flat side where the negatives and slides would be parallel to the sensor plane?

A: Yes, the bottoms of the holders are flat.

Q: 7. Will the Vello NSD-35 work with a Z-Nikkor 40mm f2 + extension tubes?

A: The Vello NSD-35 35mm Negative and Slide Digitizer is designed to use it with macro lenses that are 1:1. It is possible to use the Z-Nikkor 40mm f/2 lens with extension tubes. But you will need to experiment to find the correct tube.

Q: 8. Will this fit my Plustek 7600i scanner?

A: The Plustek 35 mm Negative & Slide Holders for 8100 & 8200i Ai will be compatible with your 7600i scanner.

Q: 9. I ordered the two holders and got one for slides and one for film. What do I do now? I thought I was getting two holders for slides.

A: I am sorry about this. For this you would need to contact our customer service team, they can be reached by phone at 800.221.5743 or 212.239.7765. As an alternative, you can send them an e-mail to a href= http://CS@bhphotovideo.com. target= _blank CS@bhphotovideo.com./a

[12.3 x 6 x 3"] This is a fairly simple setup for negative scanning that works extremely well, at least for me. Although I've only scanned about ten negatives, so far, it is easy to see that the system works well. The digitized version of the negatives came out great.

I read a fair amount about this system before I bought it, and for the money I thought no matter what I was going to try it. There are various ways of scanning negatives, but I don't think it gets much simpler or more solid than this.

But there are some things to consider, one of them is that a good macro lens is recommended. For my setup I used a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM and an R7. A full frame camera is probably a good idea too, and this coming winter I'll use a full frame and will be scanning a lot of negatives. For my first trial though, this thing was easy to set up and worked 100%.

One caveat, some people say that it cuts off the top or bottom of the negative, but if you set it up right it will do the whole negative without a problem. I had zero problems on my first try, and understood if there was such a problem I would just have to align the system correctly.

Here's an instagram from BHP that explains another way of scanning but it's still the same basic idea, this Vello system is probably easier, hope this link works. https://tinyurl.com/mpnmbx2s

[1.37 lb] I've used this for color slides only so far. At some point I'll try negatives.
I'm using a Canon 5D with EF100mm macro lens; camera on auto exposure. ISO100, f/8 @ 1/60sec. I have used the Nikon Coolscan V which gives you the ability to use infrared cleaning but the scans take longer. If you have a lot to scan and the film is clean, this will do it.
I tried matching exposure as well as I could.

[1.37 lb] This item exceeded my expectations. I needed to digitize about 3500 negatives and slides. I used it with my Canon EOS_5_Mark_IV with 100mm macro lens with it. It took me a weekend to complete photographing all the negatives and slides. The digitized images came out perfect. I'm very happy with the product.

[1.37 lb] Looked for this product for a long time! Good description of what macro lenses it fits to. Parts are sturdy. The slide and negative mounts click into place precisely. LED is bright, no hot-spots. Product works as promised.
Recommend mounting camera on sturdiest possible tripod to make the operations comfortable.

Anything more? B and H might wish to link to articles about using common software (Lightroom and Photoshop) to color-correct ancient slides that have turned a reddish brown, and other such aging effects. That detail is not always easy to find with a web-search.

[1.37 lb] Always good to have a second (set of) film / slide carriers for digitizing legacy 35mm film.

Thrty-five years of parental slides & 35 mm film to scan, plus thirty years of my adventures that will be scanned during poor weather days when going out isn't that great.

[1.37 lb] I discovered a large box of slides that I inherited from my father, going as far back as 1951! The results of the first few test slides are astonishing in the clarity of their reproduction! It'll take me some time to get through them all, but a very efficient and good quality way to preserve these for the foreseeable future.

[12.3 x 6 x 3"] Using this with my Canon 90D and Canon 100mm macro lens. I shoot the slide in RAW and process in Lightroom - results are significantly better than what I got from my pricey Canon flatbed scanner, so much so that I will redo previous work. It was easy to assemble and put to immediate use. I'm really pleased with this purchase.
