Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens have any noticeable chromatic aberration?

A: Yes Opteka 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens for T Mount does have noticeable chromatic aberration in an area of high contrast where a bright light meets a dark shadow.

Q: 2. Does this lens require a rear filter to function correctly? Many do.

A: Mine came with a lens element already installed at the rear T-mount end. So I would say an additional rear filter is not needed.

Q: 3. I would like to try this lens for deep sky photography. What light pollution filter should I use?

A: A couple of very good choices for a light pollution filter, (depending in many ways on the amount of pollution and the type of pollution an individual is experiencing), would be the NiSi 95mm Natural Night Filter https://bhpho.to/2WRqS6R or the B+W 95mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter: https://bhpho.to/31Mv4IP. It is important to keep in mind that the artificial light-blocking power of these filters also affects the natural colors found in the night sky.

Q: 4. Would it be possible to adapt a 67-mm ND filter to the rear 35-mm filter thread? How might this affect the image for Canon APS-C?

A: No, not at all.

Q: 5. What is the diameter of the central obstruction?

A: 43mm.

Q: 6. Will this work with a Nikon D3500?

A: It is a manual lens so it will work. You will need one of these adapters https://bhpho.to/2ZSLj53.

Q: 7. What is the magnification factor at minimum focus distance?

A: Unfortunately, this information is not published by the manufacturer.

Q: 8. Does it pose any problems when shooting with a non full frame camera like the Canon 70D?

A: No, there shouldn't be any issue when using this on a non full frame camera. Just keep in mind that there will be an effective crop factor of 1.6x on a camera like the Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera, which would be an 800mm full frame equivalent. Also, in order to adapt the lens to a Canon EOS 70D, you will need an adapter such as this one: https://bhpho.to/3Pb8G63

Q: 9. Stopped down, on a tripod, does it get sharp?

A: The Opteka 500mm F/6.3 Mirror Lens has a fixed aperture of f6.3 which means it cannot be stopped down or opened up. All photos are shot at f6.3 due to the design of a mirror lens. Using a lens on a tripod will prevent camera hake blur which helps improve the sharpness in a photo.

Q: 10. Do you carry the adaptor that can be used for sony a6300?

A: We have a Vello adapter for the T mount. https://bhpho.to/2wcsnBI

[Black] I have had many lenses of this type, from Korea, Russia and so forth, Initially, the performance has been good, but later the performance has so to speak tailed off. At first, I suspected sabotage, but, of late, I think that the large amount of lead in the optical glass is migrating to the silver surface of the mirrors, causing the premature deterioration of the lens performance. Could this be? At $95, even if this lens only lasts 6 months, this is a bargain. Maybe one could exchange it for a new lens after 6 months and pay a fee, much like a rental fee.

[Black] I received this lens within 3 days of ordering it. Took a few test shots. No problems at all.

This lens does require a knowledge of using your camera in Manual mode but that is all I use anyways so no problem there.

I took a few shots of the August full moon (+1Day) on August 16,2019.

Focus on this lens takes patience, patience, patience.

Attached is the final picture I got of the Full Moon and Jupiter with all 4 of it's Moons.

[0.45 lb] I love this lens. It gets me shots I wouldn't get otherwise. I also have the original Russian version of the lens which must be forty years old. This is actually a small Maksutov telescope and you can attach an eyepiece and use it as a telescope. Got the Opteka for the modern coatings. This lens is manual so you will have to go outside your comfort zone to use it but that's how you get results in the real world. When I shoot a bird on the wing I notice where the birds are flying and then focus on a sign or post that is about the same distance. Every serious photographer should have one of these. They are perfect when you have a light subject in direct sunlight - such as the beach or a snow scene or a sunset.
