Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this have a built-in mic, for scratch audio?

A: No, the Canon CR-N500 Professional 4K NDI PTZ Camera with 15x Zoom (Satin Black) does not have a internal microphone, but you can connect a mic to one of the three audio inputs.

Q: 2. Looks like the CRN300 has 1.8 wide open aperture vs. more expensive CRN500 has 2.8 wide open aperture? Why is this?

A: Sensor size on the CR-N300 is 1/2.3". The optics for that sensor provide F/1.8 aperture. The sensor size on the CR-N500 is 1", and the optics for that sensor provide F/2.8.

Q: 3. Does it come with tracking?

A: The Canon CR-N500 Professional 4K NDI PTZ Camera with 15x Zoom (Satin Black) does include focus tracking for faces, but for active PTZ Tracking and subject framing, the Canon RA-AT001 Auto-Tracking Application for CR-N700/N500/N300 PTZ Cameras, BH #CARAAT001, would be required.

Q: 4. Does the lens have threads to attach filters? For my application, I need to attach a circular polarizing filter.

A: No, the Canon CR-N500 Professional 4K NDI PTZ Camera with 15x Zoom (Satin Black) does not offer a lens thread.

Q: 5. Does this have a 1/4x20 thread on the bottom to mount on a tripod?

A: Yes it does.

Q: 6. Can the XLR inputs be configured for line-level audio, or are they permanently configured as mic-level?

A: The Canon CR-N500 Professional 4K NDI PTZ Camera with 15x Zoom (Satin Black) (B&H# CAPTZCRN500) has two XLR inputs that may be set using the camera's configuration software to mic level, line level, or mic level plus phantom power. Incidentally, the same is true of its 3.5mm input, with the power level being appropriate for that input (Plug-In Power rather than phantom power).

Q: 7. Can I remotely copy and manage video files recorded to the SD card? (via FTP or some such) Looking to set up a fully remote recording booth.

A: The Canon CR-N500 Professional 4K NDI PTZ Camera does not have recording capability in camera. However, You could use NDI software to record the output of the camera remotely to any computer connected to your LAN or WAN network. NDI tools https://www.ndi.tv/tools/

Q: 8. Is it possible to load custom LUTs onto this camera?

A: The Canon CR-N500 does not allow you to load LUTS into the camera. However, The camera does support Canon Log 3 profile which could be corrected with LUTS when editing recorded footage in post..

Q: 9. what PoE hub switch is recommended for this camera?

A: As long as the hub is rated POE+ it will work well with this camera. There is no specific model that works best it really comes down to the needs of your network (how many cameras do you need are there other devices on your network etc) but if you would like an example of a good one consider the Netgear 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ Unmanaged Switch (B&H # NEGS108PP1NA MFR # GS108PP-100NAS)

Q: 10. What wall mount bracket fits the CR-N500?

A: The HuddleCamHD LG-MT Large Camera Wall Mount (B&H # HULCWM MFR # HCM-2-BK)

[50 dB] I did a comprehensive review on YouTube going through the UI, Testing NDI latency, low light etc.

I've use this with Sony PXW-Z90v cameras (also a 1 sensor)

Pros:
4k
NDI requires just ONE cable!
Image Quality is better than the Sony PXW-Z90v (in low light)
Works with eCamm Live (Mac) via NDI (plug and play)
only 3 frame latency with NDI
Fine motor movements
Works with Mac Safari Browser
Has XLR Inputs

Cons:
I wish these devices had a camcorder battery (I could rig this to be totally wireless)
Does not have full NDI, so it isn't compatible with the Birddog Flex
Initial setup is confusing
Does not come with a lens cap (be careful when transporting) - two can fit in a Pelican 1637 case.

If you want to use NDI with the ATEM or any other HDMI based switcher, you should get the Magewell Pro Convert NDI to HDMI adaptor here at BH Photo.

My use case:
I put this in the center of a dining area for a fundraiser that provided almost 360 degrees of coverage without obstructing the views for the audience. I paired this with a Skaarhoj PTZ Pro controller.

Tip:
When you first plug it in via HDMI, you will need to set a username and password via the web browser before you can use the camera. You'll have to find the IP address!

I hope I can share the link to my overview video since it will give you a better perspective on all of the above! https://youtu.be/JTtYskJSrp4

[50 dB] This was purchased for a church to stream services. We wanted 3 angles and so this was perfect. We added in an ATEM switcher and off we went. These cameras are easily set up with SDI cables and simple ethernet cables. Word of advice, the controller MUST be a similar IP as the cameras to work. By default it is nowhere near the cameras IP range. The cameras perform well in our lighting which I expect with the lens quality on these. I do get flares from bright lights which might can be fixed in the settings. Our total cost came out to slightly over $5000 for everything. You don't need a computer if you get a high end ATEM switcher, only a good monitor or TV which we had laying around.

[PoE 802.3af] We first purchased a datavideo box camera for the back of our sanctuary. That turned out to be a mistake and didn't look nearly as good as our other Cannon and Sony cameras. So, we decided to narrow our search to the two brands we were already working with. We wanted a reliable fallback shot of the center of the front of the room that would always be dependable. We also wanted a non-obtrusive, small, mountable format that could sit above the back doors, yet still capture a tight shot all the way in the front. This was the camera that finally delivered. Plenty of optical zoom to get just the shot we want, flexibility with the remote control features and scene recall, not bulky or distracting as people exit. The camera's horizontal viewing angle looks natural compared to our other PTZs and camcorders. (whereas the Srg-XP1 leans more toward fisheye) All around, very good. The only wish that wasn't fulfilled was SDI video out for our switcher. I chose to convert the HDMI to SDI because of the length of run, so we made it work. Love this camera!

[NTSC/PAL] This is a very good camera, the preset set up is very easy to do. If you are going to hook this up to a computer, you were going to need some type of capture card and also a audio input source as well.

[PoE 802.3af] I was worried that it would be difficult to configure, but one single ethernet cable connected to a POE injector and they have power and provide a pristine image to Vimeo's Livestream Studio. It took seconds to go from no signal to live streaming. And learning to set presents and recall presents is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Literally. Push preset, Push a number, and then Push enter. These are well worth the investment.
