Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. MZD 8000 is a 2-channel module. How one MZD can be connected to a pair of MKH 80X0 mics, i.e. what Y-cable do I need?

A: Although AES42 is a stereo protocol by definition, the Sennheiser MZD 8000 Digital Microphone Module is not designed to be used with more than one microphone. It is designed to be screwed directly onto 8000-series microphones, using Mode 2 for synchronization instead of a second audio channel.

Q: 2. Can the ifootage C40 extension be used to add height to Gazelle TC6S tripod?

A: It seems that due to the Cobra 2-series of monopods' patented system, this is intended to work only with them and isn't compatible with their Gazelle-series tripods.

Q: 3. How can it be connected to a pair of MKH 80X0 mics?

A: You would unscrew the XLR module on each of your MKH 8000 series mics, and you would connect the Sennheiser MZD 8000 Digital Microphone Module to each of the MKH 8000 series mics that you want to use.

Q: 4. does anyone know where I can get the interchangeable mike clips for MKH-416/MKH-816, or MKH-20 through MKH-70?

A: Currently, these 3 different clips are available only through the Sennheiser parts store; part numbers: 038263, 035057 and 035056. You may reach a representative directly at 860-434-9190.

Q: 5. how long is it?

A: This is 15.7".

Q: 6. Does this mic come with a protective case?

A: the Sennheiser MKH416 will ship with a foam lined protective case.

Q: 7. Cheaper alternative?

A: The BP4073 Line and Gradient Condenser Microphone from Audio-Technica is well suited for capturing speech and audio in feature film recording, broadcast and theater sound reinforcement applications. The microphone measures just 9.17 in length, and weighs 3.5 oz making it ideal for long-term use on the ends of boompoles and handheld mounts. Its wide frequency response, Line + Gradient pick up pattern and low noise result in transparent audio reproduction. An 80 Hz hi-pass filter switch minimizes low-frequency noise and ambiance, while the 10 dB pad switch provides added headroom when capturing transient (peak) audio signals. The BP4073 is RoHS compliant, providing RF (radio-frequency) interference free operation. Designed for use in broadcasting, film/TV production and theater sound reinforcement applications Direct-coupled, balanced output ensures a clean signal even in high-output conditions Innovative acoustic design provides same directivity as mics up to 50% longer Switchable 80 Hz hi-pass filter & 10 dB pad Rugged housing made of lightweight structural-grade aluminum alloy RoHS-compliant - free from all substances specified in the EU directive on the reduction of hazardous substances (RoHS)

Q: 8. My use case is I'm planning to have this as a boom and the talent may walk 2-3 feet around. (training - in front of a screen). The mic will be positioned overhead : How will the performance be impacted as a result? Is this still the mic for such a task?

A: This shotgun mic is highly directional, and any shift off axis from the front of the mic will result in a drop off in sound from the presenter. To use this mic, a boompole operator would need to follow the person with the mic as they move. If that is not an option, a lavalier mic on the presenter would be a better option to ensure that no matter where the presenter moves to, the audio is captured. Here's an example of a wired lav solution, B&H # SOECM77B.

Q: 9. Will a sennheiser mke 600 fit in this?

A: The MKE-600 would be compatible as well.

Q: 10. Is extension tube made of carbon fiber?

A: This tube is made of aluminum.

[Gray] I use an array of CMC1 mics with Omni, wide and regular cardioid to capture multiple stereo imaging options simultaneously. I use the Grace 66 cm SpaceBar with multiple mounts on it. The stereo bar has 5/8-27 (standard US) mic mounts only. But the Rycote uses the 3/8-16 (more commonly used in EU). The brass adapter is provided (as seen in the product image), but it does raise the mounts an additional 2 cm. It would be nice if these were instead default 5/8-27 thread with an internal adapter for the 3/8-16, because then the installed height would be the same for either thread option. This is a minor gripe, but not trivial when trying to keep an inconspicuous low-profile of the mic bar.

The compliance of the mount is a perfect match for the CMC1, completely eliminating conducted noise from the stand reaching the mics (like foot-thumping on the stage when the mic-stand is on the stage - big problem with the rigid factory mounts that come with the Schoeps mics).

Given the really small bodies of the CMC1, I would not recommend using a standard XLR connector with this combination: the weight of the connector and cable will distort the mounts, and reduce the effectiveness of the shock-mount. I made custom cables using Cable Techniques low-profile right-angle XLR (BH #CACTBX3FR), and Mogami W2697 thin cable (BH# MOW2697164BK) which fits perfectly in the strain-relief on the Rycote mount. The cable capacitance is higher than standard mic cable, but for only a 20' length - it is far below the driving limit of the mics, so no worries about HF attenuation.

Be careful how you store these, as if they are stored for long periods in a deformed-position, they take a while to straighten-out again. These are the best shock-mounts I have found - I use a similar model for the Neumann KM-184 as well.

[1.4 lb] I watched a lot of online reviews of The 50 before making my purchase. I wondered if this mic could really sound as great as they say. So I took the chance and bought it from my most trusted source, B&H! No regrets! This mic sounds fantastic and is easy to position with its polar pattern and sensitivity.

[49 x 2 x 2"] I use it with a Sennheiser MKH 8060 and it works well.

[1.4 lb] Fit my Superlux S502Mkii stereo mic. Lost the original windscreen that came with unit, this did the trick.

[49 x 2 x 2"] This foams wind screen is a good fit, not too dense and does not seem to affect the sonic character of my MHK80xx microphones. For the short MKH8040, 8050, 8020,… this is just what is needed for indoor wind protection from vocalists, instruments and HVAC systems (the worst is HVAC wind, to be honest). Outside, this windscreen may not cut it in high winds, but that is why God made furries/ dead cats for our microphones. : )

[Gray] I use these with my MKH8050 pair for interviews. While I use these for interior interview work, there is still always potential wind sources from HVAC systems. Also, when swinging a boom pole in scene, there is a great chance for wind noise to affect the mic while the boom pole is in motion. The MZW-8000 effectively eliminates those issues. I do find I need to add a small dab of Joe’s Sticky Stuff on the barrel of the mic to ensure the wind screen never slips off the barrel of the mic… in theory, the diameter opening of the foam wind screen could be minutely smaller to form a more tight fit on the chassis of the mic.

[1.4 lb] Bought these to use with my newly acquired Sonorous Objects SO.101 and SO.103 microphones, and they fit well. I am using a normal length XLR connector, but a shorty might fit as well.

[1.4 lb] I absolutely love this microphone. It's perfect for out of frame placement while still being crystal clear. As with any Sennheiser product it's built really solid and the sound is crystal clear. 5/5

[1.4 lb] I purchased the Sennheiser MKH mics to sound and look great in live performance settings. The MZFS adds security to the equation.
