Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I've been using a Gigapan Epic Pro with a Canon 5D iii and 300mm f4 L lens. Would this PG-01 work with my camera/lens setup?

A: No, the Really Right Stuff PG-01 Compact Pano-Gimbal Head with Lever-Release Clamp and Leveling Base can not support the Canon 5d Mark III with a Canon 300mm f/4 L lens. The lens is too long and heavy.

Q: 2. Does this have indexing dentents for rotation and tilt? Can it be locked in position on both axis?

A: There are no detents but can be locked in position.

Q: 3. WOULD IT HANDLE A PENTAX KP WITH A ROKINON 16MM. I WOULD USE THIS SETUP FOR MULTIROW PANORAMA AND LONG EXPOSURE?

A: Yes, it will work with the KP and a 16mm Rokinon.

Q: 4. Would this be suitable for real estate panoramas?

A: Most definitely.

Q: 5. If it is mounted on a ball head, is the leveling base still needed ? Can we just use the ball head to level since this bracket has a bubble level ?

A: Yes, it does have an Arca mount point - but the PG-01 base is 'gimbaled' at that point with a great tightening knob, allowing easy, accurate leveling of the base. Without the bubble on the end it would be hard to get it perfectly level. If you are going to go to the trouble of using a pano bracket, you might as well get one which is a pleasure to use. Otherwise, just mount your camera on your ballhead and fire away.

Q: 6. Does it have any bubble level mounted on any rail at all ?

A: Yes, I still recommend that you use a leveling base on your tripod though, it makes the process much smoother.

Q: 7. Is the B2-LR-II de facto part of the scope of delivery of the full gimbal configuration? On the RRS website it is not mentioned.

A: The Really Right Stuff PG-02 MK2 Pano-Gimbal Head with Full Gimbal includes the full gimbal configuration.

Q: 8. Would a Canon 5d Markiii fit on this?

A: Yes, this one will fit any full frame DSLR, but it depends on a lens you are going to use. I use it with Nikon D700 or D800 and Nikon 70-200mm VRII as a maximum. This body/lens combo weighs around 2.5 kg (PG-01 load capacity is 3.6 kg/8 lb), but you should be careful how far from the tripod centre you will push them on a nodal slide. Although, primary target is a mirrorless camera user, I like how sturdy, but light and small PG-01 is, as well as its price in comparison to PG-02. I use quite long nodal slide with it (RRS MPR-192), as for example, the entrance pupil for mentioned lens (no parallax point) at 200mm is behind the camera flange and you need to have that lenght of a slide to push everything forward to the far end. I hope this can help.

Q: 9. I would like the camera to sit as low as possible - can the camera be mounted lower in the full gimbal + cradle than side mount?

A: The Really Right Stuff PG-02 MK2 Pano-Gimbal Head with Full Gimbal's full-gimbal configuration gives you an additional point of control to raise or lower the height that your camera or lens are mounted at, with additional engraved markings for precise adjustment along this axis so it can be mounted lower.

Q: 10. If the base is fixed, how can you pan? Is that base Arca Swiss compatible? Why was the pan base discontinued?

A: The Really Right Stuff PG-01 Pano-Gimbal Head with Lever-Release Clamp and Fixed Horizontal Base has an Arca plate which could be connected to a Really Right Stuff panning clamp or a Really Right Stuff ball head with a panning position.

[Yes] The reason I chose this gimbal was the low angle lock and release, when I hide it's often close to the animals. That means that every movement can scare them. That was the primary reason I chose this gimbal - and I love it. An added plus is the lock, some of the other gimbals I own move a bit when you lock the knob. This doesn't and is rock solid. Some would perhaps ask for adjustment of the fluid movement, but I find the released movement perfect for my purpose :)

[Yes] This item is well built, has excellent markings and works flawlessly. I use it on my Sirui T-025X tripod. Saved some dollars by purchasing DNR-120 nodal rail instead of the RRS rail. Item is light enough to lug around packpacking/climbing in the mountains.

[Yes] As always with RRS, a beautifully designed and manufactured product. I have a traditional gimbal (Jobu Design) which is big and heavy but very sturdy. The PG-01 from RRS is much lighter and disassemble for a much smaller footprint in the end. I am very happy to report that it is also very sturdy. I've tested it with a Sony A7rII with a Tamron 150-600 lens attached - works beautifully and perfectly. I'm mounting it on a Arca-Swiss P0 ballhead which allows me to do the leveling without any other device, or the more expensive PG-01 with a leveling base. Contrary to some other RRS products, I do not feel it is expensive for what it is. Strongly recommended!

[1.025 lb] RRS produces excellent quality products. The PG-01 is no exception. It functions well and is easy to utilize. Setting the nodal point on the lens is very simple. Highly recommend.

[Yes] RRS is very attentive to making superb equipment. This is certainly no exception. In shooting with a Sony A7r III and an assortment of lenses from 12 to 200 the total weight amounts to between 5 and 6 lbs. and the unit itself is rated to handle 8 lbs. It is light weight and compacts nicely making it easy to include in your camera kit. It is very sturdy and easy to set up and the price is not over-bearing.

[1.025 lb] I bought this lightly used from B&H. As promised it was in like new condition. It is perfect for a Hasselblad X camera as the weight of the camera and heaviest lens I am using together is under 4 pounds. I purchased a Starrett Cross Test Level and Plumb 2 inch x 3 inch which I lay on the arm for precise leveling. It takes 2 minutes to get both bubbles perfectly level using the leveling feature. I recorded the settings for each camera and lens and keep them in my phone so I am ready to shoot a panorama in just a minute or two after leveling the arm. A good steady tripod is ideal but in the field, I have achieved good results with the Peak Design Travel tripod with a ball head. Once you get used to making minute turns on the adjustment dials for rotation, the precision is there and it is easy to use. Very light and easy to store, this is the perfect panning tool if you meet the weight requirements.

[Gimbal Head] Recently started exploring the genre of stitched panoramic photography. I researched a bunch of options and for the money this checked all of the boxes in one package. Other multiple piece options were only slightly less money and not nearly as refined. This supports the Canon EOS R and Sigma 105 f/1.4 fairly well but this is the max I would load it with.

[Gimbal Head] I purchased this as an alternative to gimbal head and it does the job, holds my A7III and 100-400, panning and tilting isn’t super smooth probably since I’m close to the weight limit but for my needs(very light use) it’s perfect, small and light, pretty much fits in my pocket.
