The Icy Dock ToughArmor Mobile Rack for 3.5" Bayfrom Icy Dock ToughArmor Mobile Rack for 3.5" Bayis a small form factor storage system with low power consumption and space-saving benefits. The mobile rack is used in 3.5" drive bays (floppy bays). The ability to house two 2.5" SATA SSDs or HDDs in a single 3.5" drive bay make it suitable for building small RAID 1 backups for SMB workstations or fast RAID 0 arrays for powerful PCs. Utilizing its small form factor, the mobile rack is suitable for use in industrial PCs, SMB SFF servers, mobile DVR systems, or even home servers. The single SATA 15-pin power port keeps cables clutter-free and eases installation, and lets you save space while maintaining the speed and capacity.

The small form factor, mobile rack is capable of holding up in harsh environments with the heavy-duty metal construction. It can be used in various systems including military and law enforcement deployment, as well as manufacturing conditions such as embedded control systems and factory automation systems. With a full metal design, the ToughArmor is suitable for industrial and medical devices as it is considered to comply with flammability requirements. The material used offers heat dissipation transfer from hard drives to the mobile rack.

Multi-Flow Technology (MFT) effectively routes airflow correctly for passive cooling via ventilation slots on the front, rear, top, and bottom (in multiple locations). The Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT) and EMI grounding are used to provide a stable environment for hard drives or SSDs. LED indicators installed in the front of the mobile rack provide drive status information at all times. Active Power Technology (APT) allows each LED to be on only when a hard drive is inserted into the enclosure.

For drive security, the eagle-hook lock system on the tray ensures that hard drives do not eject when not needed. Additionally, the two segment key lock provides protection against theft of hard drives as well as safeguards any sensitive data. The EZ slide micro trays make drive interchangeability and maintenance hassle free. The trays are also designed to accommodate 7 to 9.5mm height hard drives and SSDs, creating a 2.5" hot-swap bay for standard SATA hard drives and SSDs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this cage support 4TB SSD's or is it just 2TB?

A: The Icy Dock ExpressCage 4-Bay 2.5" SAS/SATA Drive Cage for 5.25" Bay BH #ICMB324SPB supports 2.5'' SATA SSD's up to 12.5mm in height, regardless of the capacity.

Q: 2. is the 8 drive version *really* only 4.1cm/1.6" tall? i just want to make sure before i try to cram it into a 1U rack

A: The dimensions for the Icy Dock ToughArmor MB998SP-B 8 x 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Backplane Cage are 142.4 x 146 x 41.3 mm or 5.65" x 5.74" x 1.62" inches. It is meant to be placed in a 5.25" computer bay.

Q: 3. Does this require any cable connections to put a HTS541010A9E662 1TB hard drives?

A: When putting the HDD into the bay, you do not need any cables. You do need SATA cables to go from the dock to the motherboard directly.

Q: 4. Can i use this on my Mac Pro 5,1 2012 to place 2 SSDs into one 3.5inch internal drive bay? Will both drives work?

A: Yes, both drives will work in that use case.

Q: 5. Does a SAS controller is required for reading SAS disk or SATA controller on the motherboard will be fine?

A: Sata drives may be connected to SAS backplanes, but SAS drives cannot connect to SATA backplanes.

Q: 6. what is highest capacity 3.5" drives you can use?

A: According to OWC, the OWC 2-Bay 2.5" / 3.5" U.2 & SATA USB 3.2 Gen 2 Drive Dock can support both current and future HDD capacities. It does not have a specific capacity limitation, allowing you to use the latest and largest HDDs available on the market.

Q: 7. What is the max TB capacity supported for HSB100SATBK?

A: HGST 12 TB drives work with it.

Q: 8. What do i need to purchase to use this as a standalone unit?

A: As your laptop does not have external sata or SAS interfaces, only Thunderbolt or USB, there would need to be a computer in between to manage the connection as well as disperse the drives properly into your laptop's file system. A computer basically, or file/drive server. This server would interface to each physical drive via SATA and provide connectivity via USB or some other consumer level connection method. This box cannot serve these drives alone without an actual computer with processor to handle traffic management and device connectivity.

Q: 9. Hi. Does this support hotswap or hotplug for Raid 1?

A: That will depend on your RAID controller. The unit does make it simple to pop out the drives when safe to eject.

Q: 10. Does this Cage support 4TB SSD'S ?

A: Yes, it is will support 4TB SSDs.

[1x 3.5"] Pros: Self contained. Doesn't use up resources Cons: Longer than a standard 3.5 drive The drives stay loose on the trays. It looks as though the holes for the drives are slightly too wide for the screws provided. I had same issue with different screws. Product works fine as is. Other Thoughts: I've been installing these on our manufacturing equipment on their CPCI controllers. Only wish ICYDOCK offered a tray for CPCI setups. I've been making my own at a local maker space. Of the 7 I've installed so far, I've only had one bad unit. I'll be sending it back for warranty. Still a great solution for our needs. I would like to see some indication, either via lights or the monitoring software, that the unit has finished building the new RAID array. To avoid loosing any data, I first install the SSD and power up the unit. Give it 5min to build the array. Then take out the SSDs and clone the original drives. The manual is not very specific about this.

[SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)] I am very pleased with the ease of use and performance of this product. The only thing that would make it better is that if it were trayless, but I knew what it was when I bought and am extremely pleased with it.

[SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)] This is a great product if you have limited space and power. Use 1- 5.25 Drive Bay and then mount up to 2 - 2.5mm drives and one slimline (Laptop) dvd/blueray Drive in unit. I'll be getting another :-) :-)

If the screws don't fit then use other screws.
Extra power connectors on the back if you don't have the right one coming from your power supply.

[SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)] Very solid, all metal construction. Definitely a tougher build than other removable-rack drive decks.

[SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)] I bought this because I liked the fact that it didn't have a rail/caddy
system like many of the other models. There's really not much to this
simple design, which is why I like it. You're just sliding an SSD into a
power + SATA connector. Not much to go wrong here.

The SSD's I've tried in it fit somewhat tightly in the slot so a bit of force is required to push them in, and quite a lot of force is required to pop them out by pressing the button. I'm not sure if this would be the case with all SSDs or just the model I'm using. If I were going to be popping SSDs in and out multiple times a day, I might be bothered by this, but for my usage pattern, it's fine.

[SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)] I recently acquired a Dell 5180 workstation. It has a mirror pair of boot SSDs but not local storage. Fine for an enterprise workstation, but not a home system. The Icy Dock enabled me to add two more 2.5 HDDs and a multi-card reader to teh only 5.25 bay.
Only complaint, had to purchase a SATA power splitter. Would have been easy to include in packaging.

[Yes] I was looking to build a seven SSD RAID in my HP z820 for video playback and found this 8 bay Icy Dock on B&H. I thought they only built these for 6 drives, but was psyched to find one cage to hold all of my drives.

This is a sturdy metal case that holds the eight drives neatly and secure while allowing for easy access at the push of a button. The dual fans on the back provide cooling for the drives.

I highly recommend this storage solution for anyone looking to mount multiple ssds
