Quickly grow your storage capacity with the Mobius 2C 2-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 RAID Enclosurefrom Oyen Digital. Install your choice of 3.5" SATA III hard drives into the two bays and use the hardware controller's switch to select between RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD, and BIG (merged drive) modes.

RAID 0 mode stripes drives together to optimize performance while RAID 1 mirrors data on both drives for redundancy. Use the default JBOD setting to utilize the drives individually and BIG (aka SPAN) mode to merge the two drives in a non-RAID configuration. The USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 host connection supports up to 10 Gb/s transfers with compatible devices. An integrated hub provides a second USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with 15W of power for daisy chaining additional devices.

Please note that while the main USB-C port is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4, performance will be reflective of 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2. Also, the hub port is only USB compatible and will not support Thunderbolt devices.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I connect this to my existing QNAP TS-431K which is powered by an APC UPS, will the TS-431K signal the TR-004 to power down when street power is lost?

A: You will need to connect it also to the UPS.

Q: 2. With 16TB, 18TB and even larger drives on or coming, will this enclosure work with 4 of them? Is there a limit to the individual drive size?

A: This unit will accept all 2.5 " and 3.5" hard drives regardless of capacity.Currently, QNAP lists two 16 TB drives (Seagate ST16000NE000 and ST16000VN001) as the maximum capacity compatible with this unit .

Q: 3. I'm currently using a 14TB external drive for Time Machine backup on my Mac. Can I remove and insert that hard drive into the QNAP and add another 14TB disk and use it as JBOD, or do I have to copy the Time Machine data and reformat the 2 drives?

A: It is recommended instead that you install drives that are certified compatible with the TR-004. You can then migrate the Time Machine backup to the TR-004.

Q: 4. I can not get this thing to mount. It doesn't appear in the Disk Utility. It the QNAP software kind find it. It keeps spooling up and shutting down repeatedly. I'll get "Disc Not Ejected properly" messages. What's with it?

A: Please reach out to pc@bhphotovideo.com so we can help you troubleshoot, we would really need more information to try to give you a solution.

Q: 5. Can this be used as a local backup for a larger QNAP NAS (TVS-872xt)?

A: Yes, as per the manufacturer the TR-004 would be compatible for expansion as a local back up with the TVS-872XT.

Q: 6. With RAID used with DIP switches, can you still read individual hard drive S.M.A.R.T. info?

A: Most do not allow this. This one has not been tested.

Q: 7. What would be the writing speed/ reading speed? Suitable for 4k editing?

A: The QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 1 RAID Expansion Enclosure is an expansion enclosure and will be limited to the read and write speeds of the drives that you installed. The unit has a USB-C 3.2 connection.

Q: 8. With 16TB and 18TB drives now on or coming to market, will 4 of these work in this enclosure?

A: At the time of this message, the QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Expansion Enclosure BH #QNTR004US supports up to 16TB drives. Unless something drastically changes with 18TB drives, they should work but I couldn't guarantee it until QNAP has tested them and adds them to the drive validation list.

Q: 9. What do i have to do to get raid 1 on all 4 drives (becoming 2 drives)?

A: RAID 1 is 1 drive data and all the remaining drives are redundant copies. For this device that would be 3 drives of backup.

Q: 10. Can I use this for SSD cache? For example 2HDs in Raid 1 in the host and one SSD as cache in the tr-004

A: No, the QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 1 RAID Expansion Enclosure can not work as cache.

[1x Fan] Previous RAID storage no longer worked when I upgraded to the latest operating system. Very disappointed. We'll see how long this one lasts. For now pleased to have quickly gotten this new enclosure after placing my order

[Aluminum] I purchased the qnap because I could not set up a drobo 5n I purchased a couple of years ago. The drobo 5n software no longer works. I've only ever used drobo. I set up qnap yesterday with the help of one of Qnap tech rep. They were so easy to get a love person Joshua, which is very important to me. Joshua helped with every step and was really patient with my set up. I synced the Qnap with Time Machine. So far very good. We set it up just like drobo. If one hard drive fails you can hot seal it with a new drive and you don't loose any info. The rep at B&H was great too. He gave me direct ph# to Qnap customer svc.

[5.77 lb] I've bought three of these - two for work and one for personal use. I use two as RAID 5 backups and one as a JBOD enclosure for loading old drives when I need to find archived files. (I don't necessarily recommend using it this way - it's not really designed to be cycling drives in and out on a regular basis - but it is nice to be able to load 4 drives at a time when I'm looking through the archives.) I don't use the NAS function so I can't speak to that. One of the RAID drives has been connected and running for over a year with no issues. No problems connecting when computer turns on every day. I use 5400rpm drives so I've not tested the speed limits of the USB connection, but it performs as I would expect with those drives. It's been a good workhorse for me and I would recommend for anyone looking for a reasonably priced raid enclosure.

[1x Fan] Very easy to set up and is working as expected. Set it up as a RAID 5. I'm not a computer tech by any means so please know that I had zero issues on setting up. My only negative is that with the drives running it's a little louder than I expected but not an issue or is it that distracting. My use is as a DAS system for image editing. Time will tell, but hopefully works and last as expected. I installed 6 TB WD Red Pro drives in the unit. Would definitely recommend.

[1x Fan] I was one of those guys who had a million hard drives. Im shooting a documentary in BRAW and scooped up 4 10TB drives for footage. This gives me 30tbs in a RAID 5 arrangement.

[Aluminum] I had old 8-bay ARC-8050 (a Thunderbolt [v1]) unit from Areca. While it kept the data that I needed, during the Mac OSX BigSur shutdown it usually timed out when I wrote something to it. I wanted to change to a higher capacity and a new Thunderbolt 3 device. I got it shipped quickly directly from a third party. I checked the order of drives in the old 8-bay ARC-8050 (top one is drive #1, bottom one is drive #8); checked the order of drives in the new 12-bay Areca unit (top left is #1, top right is #6, bottom right is #12); placed drive #1 from the old unit into drive #1 in the new one, .. etc. Connected the new unit to my Mac, booted Mac and... my drive appeared... Very and painless transfer... The new unit is very fast: write is about 1600 MB/s, read about 700 MB/s (that's 8 10TB drives configured as RAID 6 [60TB disk] with about only 4TB free on disk). I'll add more drives when I have the money :-)

[Aluminum] I already had the same model for a couple years so I bought it again when it recently went on sale. It's a perfect addition to my QNAP NAS to increase the storage. I opted for (4) 1TB SSDs this time instead of HDDs. Have it serving NFS to host my VMs. Works great!

[27 dBA] There are many USB Raid drives available, but most are 5 Gb/s or slower. So the SSD speed is wasted, and what you get is about the same as a spinning HD drive.

This dual Raid does indeed connect at 10 Gb/s which is double or more the speed of many dual drive enclosures.

[Aluminum] I needed a desktop storage solution that could hold a lot of data. This DAS did exactly what I wanted. I didn't want a NAS, and I didn't want a fleet of hard drives sitting on my desk. Setup was very fast, very easy, it connects to my PC with ease and does what I needed it to.

[Aluminum] I purchased the TR-004 to function as a stand alone 4-bay external raid. QNAP's external control software made it easy to set up the 4 drives in a RAID 10 array.

I use HD Sentinel to monitor the SMART status for each drive. The folk who write the software seem to have worked with QNAP to gain access to the SMART data.

Crystal Diskmark indicates that the top speed for sequential reads and writes is in the 250MBs range. So, it is not a fast setup-but it does do the job.
