Full 192 kHz sampling rate at a clear 24-bit resolution will make you smile listening to the crisp and astonishing sound you’ll get.

While conventional monitor controllers directly pass the signal through the volume potentiometer, the STUDIO XL controls a separate high-precision amplifier circuit that drives the volume change. For perfect stereo and phase coherency, precision level adjustment, accurate sound and no quality degradation over time.

  • The STUDIO XL comes with three pairs of input connectors, additional Aux Mix stereo input, and a 3.5mm stereo input on the front for connecting a smartphone or music player as well as three pairs of high-quality outputs to connect your favorite monitor speakers.
  • The first 2 inputs can be fed by a line source or any type of microphone, in any combination—operating in dual mono or stereo-link mode. Not to mention the 2-Track and Studio/Phones Amp outputs, which can be used for a variety of applications. Connect a 2-track digital recorder, an additional soundcard, mixer, headphones distribution amplifier, or whatever you require.

  • You can select between an internal or external mic to talk to the talent in the isolation booth. The STUDIO XL’s high-quality, built-in microphone is just a button push away. There's even a Talkback Footswitch option that frees up your hands and lets you concentrate on what's important, the music. The onboard headphone amplifier section lets you connect 2 pairs of headphones with individual level controls and a separate source selector, which will make the next session one of your best.
  • The STUDIO XL also comes with the most important switches exactly where you need them—right at your fingertips. Mono and Mute buttons and even a Dim switch, which instantly reduces the signal going to the monitor speakers by 20 dB. Perfect for momentarily lowering the volume to talk to someone without moving the knob.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are the pre-amps improved comparing to the old dr-40 version ?

A: The preamps are slightly improved from the first version, a audio interface was integrated allowing to transfer data via USB from the DR-40 to the computer , in addition a dictation mode was added designed for human voice recording and transcription.

Q: 2. record phone call from smartphones?

A: Recording a smartphone call to a device like the Tascam DR-40X 4-Channel / 4-Track Portable Audio Recorder may prove difficult, as the hardwired output from the phone will typically only send audio from the caller on the other end into the recorder. In theory, the person on the recording end of the call could connect a microphone to the second input on the DR-40X and speak into the microphone while using the phone like a speakerphone. There are devices designed to simplify this scenario, such as BH #JKCELLTAP4C JK Audio CellTap 4C Wireless Phone Audio Tap Adapter, which can output both sides of the call to a recorder. The easiest method may be to identify an application compatible with your specific smartphone that is capable of recording the phone call directly to your phone.

Q: 3. Can one use this simply as a stereo mic amplifier with a 9v battery and no USB connection?

A: The ART USB Dual Pre can operate as a standalone mic preamp using 9V battery or AC power.

Q: 4. Am I able to use the line out jack to connect this with an iPad or iPhone?

A: I am afraid not. These iOS devices are looking for a microphone input.

Q: 5. Is it possible to record from the XLR inputs and the onboard mics simultaneously?

A: Yes. Its on-board unidirectional condenser mics can be set for a wide or tight stereo image, and may be used simultaneously with the mic/line combo inputs.

Q: 6. Does the new dr 40x allow me to record directly to my camcorder’s / dslr’s soundtrack in real time without having to sync later? If so, where is the “line out” of unit located?

A: There's a line out/ headphone output on the top left side of the recorder. This gives a line level out and your camera takes a microphone level signal, in order for the sound to come out clean in the recoding in your camera SD card you will need a attenuator cable such as the one in the link bellow https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/746645-REG/Sescom_LN2MIC_ZOOMH4N_LN2MIC_ZOOMH4N_Line_to.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 7. Why would I buy DR-40X instead of DR-40? Does -40X have everything in -40 ? Does -40X have more than -40 ?

A: While the DR-40 functions only as a portable digital audio recorder, the DR-40X also provides the option to function as a 2-channel audio interface with your computer. This would be a great consideration for podcasts. It also has an overdub recording option which is useful for musicians, where you can record a single voice or instrument and then record a 2nd audio track over the one that is already recorded. The DR-40X also has a multi-language menu, as well as a dictation mode which can be used to capture testimonials, reminders, or lectures and is made to work ideally with dictation software for transcription purposes.

Q: 8. Will this work with Windows 10?

A: Not compatible with Windows 10.

Q: 9. Does the USB connection power the device instead of internal batteries?

A: Yes, the DR-40X can be powered via USB instead of using the device's internal battery.

Q: 10. can this recorder playback audio files?

A: Yes it can. Audio File Formats: BWF, MP3, WAV Sample Rates WAV: 44.1 / 48 / 96 kHz MP3: 44.1 / 48 kHz Bit Depth 16 / 24-Bit

[Black] This is some of the best money I have spent. I had the Zoom h4n for my solution to get audio with my 60D. Not very elegant and time consuming to sync up. This unit is small, built well and sounds great. I don't expect the price to stay this low for long, it is unbelievable the quality of the unit and compactness.

[+22 dBu] Two of these digital preamps were used in the construction of my first surround sound microphone array internet appliance. The first stream from the appliance using this preamp went online May 15, 2011 and will be available very soon at @. I have been operating these preamps for 24 hours straight and they are working great. The construction of the unit appears very professional. Operating at about 44db of gain, there was little noise in the stream. However going from 44db to 48 db, the amplifier noise became apparent. If you are looking for a low cost, high qaulity preamp for your computer, this is the preamp to buy.

[+22 dBu] For the money, this is a great little system. It plugs right into my Windows Vista computer with no issues, and Audacity recognized it without any problem at all. So far I have not had any complaints about the headphones being too quiet like I read in some reviews. But I use small in-ear earbuds, which could make a difference. I also bought this to use as a preamp with my Canon T2i. I have not tried out that functionality yet, but others have had good success. The phantom power works great using USB. Using the 9 volt battery power source added a slight bit of noise to the headphones. I have not tried recording while using the battery to see if it puts noise in the recording signal. I have been using it with an AKG c1000s microphone and have gotten very good results. The phantom power works great! I don't have the power adapter to use it as a standalone box, but having the three power sources available is very convenient. I especially like the USB power option as I primarily bought it for use with my computer. I have been using it as an external sound card and the sound is great out of it. It has stopped working a couple of times, and I had to unplug the USB cable and replug it. I'm not sure if that's my computer's fault or the box's fault. I am very happy with my purchase. It's all I need to basic recording and you really cannot beat the price or the power for the size.

[+22 dBu] I really like this item, especially since my application for it is field and location recording and processing. Very portable and packs a bevy of features in a small case. Would like to have a firewire connection, but the USB works quite well.

[Black] I've purchased a couple dozen over the past few years to help others record audio from their home office. Very simple to install, great sound and sturdy quality. Never had an issue with any of the units.

[5.26 lb] I bought this Pre in order to test the acoustic properties of my listening room. I was very pleased to discover that it was recognized as a new input device by both Mac and Windows without installing any driver. The unit can be powered via USB, a (not included) Power adapter or a battery!

[12 VDC at 2 A] Metric Halo is a bit of a niche, but it's well worth investing in. The preamps and conversion are so dead clean I don't think about anything other than microphones and placement; they are right on par with Merging Technologies' hardware at a much more approachable price point. The expandability to the EdgeCard slot is both part of their trademark future-proofing philosophy and also just really flexible to have in an interface. I have one unit fitted with a MADI card, and the other with ADAT so my options to combine with other interfaces is huge (right now I'm also using RME, which is secondary in preamp and A/D/A quality, in my opinion, to these boxes). Combining the two interfaces with the proprietary MHLink is a breeze for lightning fast setups, though I would like to see compatibility with a more universal network audio format like Dante or AES67. And as icing on the cake, these boxes are capable of becoming full digital consoles, so in the rare event that I have to run live sound, I can hook up some faders to my laptop and route things in MiOConsole to become a fully functional console as well as a rock solid recording interface.
