Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What size/thread is the hole in the top (male) baby stud?

A: It is not threaded.

Q: 2. Is the lower end blocked? Can I connect using a long stud so that the extension and the lower stand makes direct contact?

A: The is no hollow hole from the end to end in Kupo Baby Stand Extension (18"). On some baby pin 5/8 you won't be able to place to completely down in the pin.

Q: 3. Is the listed minimum height with the center column raised or lowered?

A: The Kupo High Baby Stand (13.75') minimum working height is 55.5" / 141 cm.

Q: 4. Why is its weight not listed in the SPECS?

A: As a metal rod extension the Kupo Baby Stand Extension (24") BH #KUKG019512, it would be the stand limits that would be more the determining factor.

Q: 5. Do the locking pins dig directly in the poles or is there a metal "brake" for better grip and less damage to the pole?

A: There is a brake between the pole and the collar to add friction and prevent damage to the pole.

Q: 6. How much weight can this hold? Looking to support an AD200 with a medium sized Godox umbrella with diffuser.

A: Hi Stephanie, While Kupo does not provide a load rating on this model, a lightweight fixture like the AD200 with an umbrella will be fine mounted to this arm.

Q: 7. I’m hoping to use this to replace the cheap Sunswatter boom that is included in the Sunswatter kit. Originally Sunswatter kits camera with a solid Avenger Boom. My original Avenger boom has got to be 12-15 years old and is still going strong. I’ve gone through a handful of the cheap Sunswatter ones. I’m hoping this is similar to the Avenger?

A: Yes, the Kupo Baby Handheld Boom Arm (Aluminum) can work like the Sunswatter boom, But you need to use the part that comes with the kit to attach it to the frame.

Q: 8. Is the baby pin welded on top? I want to find a stronger handheld boom than the Sunswatter "Heavy Duty" boom, over time the baby pin loosens up.

A: According to the manufacturer, the 5/8" baby pin stud on the end of the Kupo Baby Handheld Boom Arm (Aluminum) is tight fitted into the tube and fixed with crossed pins instead of a single pin. Basically, the baby pin would not loosen if you stay below the maximum payload listing of 7.94 lb (3.6 kg).

Q: 9. Can I buy two of these and stack them on top of each other? to maker it a total of 48"?

A: Regarding the Kupo Baby Stand Extension (24"), stacking two of them is not recommended.

Q: 10. How does this attach to the light stand? I can't tell from the pictures. Is there another part to purchase to connect the boom to, for example, C-stand?

A: You would use a grip head (Kupo's term), basically a special vice with a stand receptacle. The boom's slotted plate slides into the grip head, which then attaches to a normal stand's stud.

[Black] No problem mounting a larger strobe on this "baby" Kupo. Much thicker than the monopole from my covetable lightweight light stand (phottix padat carbon fiber); felt more like my Avenger C stand. Worked great with a Profoto b10x plus and a 2ft octa. Would not feel bad adding a larger modifier as well, like the 3ft or an umbrella. Great grip. Rugged bottom for resting the ground as needed. Highly recommended for strobes and modifiers that are bigger than regular hot shoe flashes.

[4] Not much to say... Do you need a solid piece of metal to hold a light or other stand-related accessory? Do you need it to be exactly 24-inches? If you answered yes to both of these questions, click 'buy' ;-)

[Black] Solid construction, works as I intend it to, as an overhead top down camera setup. Also use it for booming lights. Works great.

[Aluminum] I am very pleased with the build quality of this boom! I am heavily invested in OCF style photography and use handheld booms frequently for portrait work and weddings. I had previously purchased the (more expensive...) Photoflex LiteReach Plus, which I've gotten by with for years, but I was never impressed. The LiteReach is flimsy, and the brake knuckles are not well designed. They don't seem to tighten down enough to prevent spin and there is wobble between the separate segments. I've also had to reassemble them several times because they fall apart occasionally.

This guy here though is a different story. It is made of thicker gauge metal, extends further, bares a heavier load and the knuckles are beefy! Overall, the construction and materials used are much higher quality and is cheaper than the LiteReach. Also, small difference but the one I received was all black including the baby pin at the end. Very happy with my purchase. Kinda kicking myself for not buying this the first time around.

[4] This is a heavy boom pole by itself but it is very sturdy. It extends when needed and is more than worth the cost. I know this will last for years with no issues.

[Optional] I had been looking for a lightweight boom pole that would work as a location main light rig when using modifiers that need to be positioned straight over camera. It met all my expectations and requirements: Light weight, anti rotation baby hex stud, grip head, heavy duty knuckles, its very portable, rigid with a sizable load.

[Optional] Boom arm works great!

[Round] I used this for a family portrait station at a Haloween Event to support my hair light. It worked perfectly. Extremely well built.

The main reason i chose this boom arm is that it seemed to be the least bulky for packing in my light stand bag. The pivot point on some of the other options stick out and have huge handles and so forth making it akward to fit in with other gear.

You must realize you need to buy a "grip head" separately to use this. I used a matthews mini-grip head (if you are not familiar with this grip head it is a hard plastic and much smaller than a standard grip head). It was very secure and there were zero issues with slippage.

So right now that head is priced at 30 dollars so you are looiking at around 140 for a working setup, but odds are if you are looking at this you already own plenty of grip heads.

Anyway i'm glad i found this as i shoot on location a lot, and its important i can pack gear up in my kit.

I took a chance on this one and i'm glad i did. Highly recommended.
