This Tilta Illusion White Mist Filter 4x5.65 1/4from Tilta Illusion White Mist Filter 4x5.65 1/4can be used to create a cinematic look by lowering contrast and highlights within the frame to balance the tonal range between highlights and shadows. Made of water white optical glass, the filter features a 1/4 strength grade, with the filter effect becoming approximately twice as strong as a grade number increases. Double-sided nano-coating adds scratch and smudge resistance and prevents reflection. The rectangular filter measures 4 x 5.65", and the kit includes a convenient storage bag and cleaning cloth.

White mist diffusion filters are commonly used to create a glow around light sources with a light diffusion while retaining shadow detail. It suppresses highlights and lifts shadows for well-balanced contrast. The all-glass filter can be used in any 4 x 5.65" matte box tray or slot, including the Tilta Mirage Matte Box.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello. What's the thickness of the frame?

A: The dimensions of the Tilta 4 x 4" Filter Tray for MB-T03 & MB-T05 Matte Boxes are. Dimensions 5.91 x 4.72 x 0.24" / 15 x 12 x 0.6 cm

Q: 2. What is the difference between this product and a Neutral Density 5.4 Solar Eclipse Filter besides the price?

A: The difference is safety and your vision! The solar filter is ISO 12312-2 Compliant. The neutral density filter is NOT. Read the ISO Warning on the product. ISO 12312-2 Compliant Warning: Viewing the Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage, blindness, and equipment damage. Always use an approved ISO 12312-2 certified solar filter when observing the Sun through optics or cameras. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder. Ensure the solar filter is ISO 12312-2 Compliant. And buy from a reputable source like B&H. Many of the answers to this question are inaccurate and dangerous. I have flagged those answers to B&H so hopefully those answers have already been removed. When you are looking at the sun either directly or through optics, get your answers from experts in the field.

Q: 3. What size should I get for a lens using a 77mm filter, Canon 100-400?

A: Get the 65-89mm OD (outside diameter). I have a 77mm lens and it fits perfectly.

Q: 4. 70 mm size, would it work on my 2 lenses with filter sizes are 77 and 62 mm or should I also buy the smaller size?

A: For use on a 77 mm filter size , we recommend the DayStar Filters 90mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter (Single, 85-99mm OD) B&H # DAULF90 90mm = 3.54331 inches. 77 mm = 3.0315 70 mm = 2.75591 inches. 62 mm = 2.44094 inches.

Q: 5. I have a 24-120 mm using a 77 mm filter. The lens hood diameter is 110 mm. Should I use the lens hood during the eclipse?

A: It is a matter of opinion but I would recommend using the hood always. Even if the sun is directly in the frame and the hood cannot stop the flares, the hood still provides safety protection in case the camera is dropped. Since the Daystar filter is not large enough for the hood, this screw on ND filter can be used for solar protection instead: https://bhpho.to/2m7h8oX

Q: 6. what is the ND equivalent of this filter?

A: The DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter (Single, 65-89mm OD) is a solar filter and not an ND. So there is no density rating for it.

Q: 7. would this filter fit on a Sony SEL1670Z 16-70mm f/4?

A: I agree with Nathan, the 65-89mm filter would be too big unless you wrapped something around the lens first. The Day Star 50mm sounds perfect for your lens. The B&H site is now showing the larger filter as discontinued at this time anyway.

Q: 8. If using 67 mm lens which one is better to use 65-89, or 50-69?

A: My selection would be for the smaller, DayStar Filters 50mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter (Single, 50-69mm OD) BH #DAULF50 • MFR #ULF50

Q: 9. Can it be used with regular circular filter holder? or it works only with the VND module?

A: The Tilta 95mm Variable ND for Mirage Matte Box has a specific set of three screws that the Tilta Lightweight Filter Clamp-On Adapter needs to attach to.

Q: 10. Can I use this to take practice photos of the sun for the upcoming solar eclipse?

A: Yes, you can use the DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter can be used to take practice photos of the sun, to get ready for photographing the upcoming solar eclipse. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/how-to-photograph-a-solar-eclipse

[0.39 lb] Super simple & light durable with the leather tab

[0.39 lb] I use this filter on every exterior night shot, most interior night shots, and most close-ups. My lenses already have a nice soft focus to them, so combined with this, it really gives that nice cinematic touch. I typically just bounce between three filters for everything I do; a VND, a circular polarizer, or this 1/8 Black Mist (All are Vaxis via a Tilta Matte Box). If I had lenses with a sharper focus, I might have jumped to the 1/2, but for my setup, the 1/8 hits to spot without overdoing it.

[0.39 lb] It holds 6-7 cards plus 4-5 notes. Easy to access any card you need while keeping the overall thickness very low. Like the design.

[Glass] Really wanted this particular grade. And got at a very good price. Thank you B&H

[Glass] This filter does a nice job softening the digital edges in a very subtle way (might be too subtle for some, but great for news/doc to not overdramatize the look.) Fits great with Tilta Mirage, eager to compare to Tilta's new Illusion line.

[Glass] It's a must to buy. It helps me a lot to diffuse the light and have softer skin

[Glass] Not a fan of the pure mist look, but these black mist give the perfect balance of diffusion and clarity. 1/4 looks nice too, but can be a bit heavy handed for backlit scenarios. 1/8 is a great all-rounder.

[0.39 lb] I was hesitant to invest in propriety filters for my Tilta Mirage matte box, but the low price, light weight and performance make them a good value. I just hope Vaxis continues to offer them, as filters can break or get scratched.

The 1/8 filter is very subtle, which may be exactly what you want. It blooms highlights and practical lights in the shot, but doesn't seem to do much for skin tones. I need to shoot more with this one, but I will purchase a 1/4 mist for stronger effect.

I will also invest in a set of the Vaxis IRND filters, as the Mirage's VND filter has a bit of a yellow/green cast. The cast isn't hard to dial out with a custom white balance on set or color work in post, but reviews of the IRND filters indicate they have much less cast to deal with.

The Tilta Mirage is a nice system, and unless someone else produces circular filters for it, the Vaxis filters are the only option. Thankfully, it's a good one.
