The Radius RAD-2 is a microphone shockmount suitable primarily for outdoor booming or indoor, when using the mic by itself or with a slip-on fur windshield on it. Designed to hold standard-length shotgun and small-diaphragm pencil microphones (19-25mm in diameter, up to 250mm in length), this suspension provides exceptional isolation from movement, handling noise, and other vibrations associated with booming.

The RAD-2 features two soft-coated universal mic clips (dark gray). To achieve the best isolation for your style of booming, three pairs of interchangeable RAD-2 hoops are included: standard firmness (black), soft firmness (dark gray), and extra-firm (dark blue). The RAD-2 hoops are slightly thicker than RAD-1 hoops and have an extra 3mm of bracing on top to hold the extra weight of front-heavy microphones.

The base of the shockmount comes with a 360° rotatable XLR holder to further isolate the mic from cable noise. There is a 3/8"-16 thread at the bottom to mount the RAD-2 on boompoles, stands, or with quick-connect attachments.

  • Sennheiser MKH416, Sennheiser MKH8060, Sennheiser MKE600
  • Schoeps CMIT 5, Schoeps SuperCMIT, Schoeps MiniCMIT
  • Sanken CS-3
  • Rode NTG-3
  • DPA 2017, DPA 4017
  • Other standard-length shotgun microphones
  • Small condenser pencil microphones 19-25mm in diameter

The RAD Handle Grip is designed to attach to the RAD-2. It has a 3/8" threaded bottom, so it can fit on boom poles, stands, or used with a quick-connect attachment. The handle has a rubber coated embedded XLR holder with a rubber safety strap to keep the XLR socket securely fitted inside.

All of the components of the RAD-1, RAD-2, and RAD-3 shockmounts are produced using virtually indestructible thermoplastic elastomers from high-precision injection molding in an ISO-9000 certified factory (no 3D printing ).

Each of the parts for all versions of the mounts are interchangeable for use. Spare parts are also available to add individual components to your mount as needed.

The RAD shockmounts are made in England.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If using as a boom mic, is there a suggested receiver to pair it with?

A: If attempting to use this mic as a wireless shotgun, you would need wireless system with a plug on transmitter that provides phantom power to power the mic. Here's a recommendation, BH #SOUWPD2614.

Q: 2. Will this support an Amaran 200x with an Aputure light box 30120?

A: The Impact Combo Boom Stand (12.95') BH #IMLSCB6 will not support a 200x on the boom.

Q: 3. What is the screw thread on the end of the arm? I have a Lume Cube Panel and I want to be able to screw that on if I need only a small off-camera light. Will I need an adapter?

A: The stud on the end of the Combo Boom Stand has a 1/4" thread on one side and 3/8" on the other. The 1/4" side fits the bottom of the LumeCube panels.

Q: 4. Will a sand bag help increase the weight limit? If not what's my next best option for approximately the same price?

A: The sand bag will help with keeping the stand balanced and from tipping over, but it will not increase the structural support. That being said, I chose this stand over the Manfrotto of the same design because the boom angle adjuster is significantly stronger.

Q: 5. Are there replacement shock mounts for this if one breaks?

A: Yes, Rode does sell replacement parts and they do have a replacement for the shock mount on the PG2-R. The part is not available to purchase through retailers, so you will need to contact Rode directly in order to get a replacement. You can reach customer support at Rode by phone at 562-364-7400. Their US office is based in California.

Q: 8. Will this support an AD600 with 42 inch octabox (approx. 10lbs) when the boom is extended 3-4 feet?

A: The boom when extended is rated for about 6.5lbs.

Q: 9. Would this fit the Yeti X (not the nano, regular, or pro); the X has its mic-thread hole in the middle of the base (rather than the regular and pro which both cheat the hole towards the back side of the bottom of the mic)?

A: According to Blue, the Radius III shock mount is compatible with virtually any microphone or mic clip that has a standard thread mount. Therefore, it would be support the Nano X .Blue Yeti X USB Microphone (Dark Gray), BH #BLYXUSBM.

Q: 10. Does the crescent section for adjusting the angle have ridges or is it smooth?

A: The following unit offers a brake pad that has ridges for extra support.

[0.84 lb] Got this fitting on a Blue Compass boom arm and a Yeti X. Fits perfectly and using the mount and hanging the mic rightside-up or upside-down.

[0.84 lb] Took this grip out on a very challenging shoot and was very impressed. No slippage, great cable management options, excellent build quality. I appreciate the large cover on the nut that adjusts tilt, feels solid and easy to grab quickly. Did some tests to see how much wiggle room I had on handling noise and actually had to shake my boom to get anything to transfer through the mount. Very satisfied with this product overall.

[0.84 lb] I purchased this along with my Auray BAI-2U (see that review here at B&H). It fits my Yeti Blue perfectly and is very solid. I have no doubt it will last as long if not longer than my Yeti Mic.

[0.84 lb] One review states that this thing swings down and doesn't stay tight. I'm not sure what they are talking about. I have used this shockmount for over a year with no issues (knock on wood). I could see the rubber (red) portions eventually tearing or something due to set-up/breakdown over time, but they are removable and likely replaceable. I am happy with this purchase and will likely buy again.

[0.84 lb] This is a really nice shock mount. Prevents any noise from my boom arm from affecting the audio quality. Nice and sturdy!

[0.84 lb] There are times when a full Zeppelin kit is simply too much for the job, and when weight management on the boom pole is extremely important.

The PG2-R is a much-improved version from the original PG2. It is lighter weight and features the quiet lyre suspension mount from Rycote. As an alternate solution to the Rode Zeppelin kit, this is a must-have piece in any sound kit that included the NTG-3.

[0.84 lb] I audio record birds out in nature and have really wanted to get a good pistol grip. This works really well with the new Rode NTG2 shotgun mic I also purchased. I also felt like I needed a way to stow it while I am out walking in the woods. So I bought a Spider Tool Hoster Set - it is a quick draw belt holster clip, designed for tools like a power drill but works great with this.

[0.84 lb] I was skeptical but this thing is WELL BUILT and it gets the job done! As soon as I added it between my Yeti mic and the boom arm, vibrations caused by keyboard and mouse handling went away.
