A: The main camera compartment (closest to your back) does not compress. It's about 7 inches thick (externally). The two front compartments further from your back will lay flat if nothing is in them and expand a bit if you stuff them full.

A: Easily, I've carried a 5d III with a 100-400 II attached, a 24-105 L a 7D II body and a 16-35 L on a number of hikes with a FEISOL tripod on the outside. More gear than I needed but the pack handles it easily. On another note, because the opening is against your back, this pack is great for travel. Makes it virtually impossible for a thief to get to your gear especially on trains buses etc.

A: No, it is not removable. It is possible however to wrap the belt around the back of the bag and then click the belt together to hold it in place away from your body.

A: Yes, but it would significantly limit the rest of whatever gear you may wish to include.

[Black] I’m using this bag for nursing school. It holds my laptop, all my nurse things, fits a lunch and my puffy jacket inside. The pockets are very nice and assessable. I will use this for day hiking as well. Very comfortable to wear. Like the other review mention, it does not stand up on its own but that is not a problem. I prop it up against my chair, wall, or hang it on a hook. 5

[Yes] [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I travel a lot and this is finally the perfect size backpack to travel with. It fits above your seats in the airplane and it also fits underneath the seat. I can fit my laptop, books, water bottle, all my charging wires, iPad, and even a comfy jacket and still doesn't feel too big and bulky. The straps are also very comfortable and makes traveling with it while walking around the airport so much more enjoyable. 5

[Zipper] After impressive 8 years of daily usage including plenty of travel my beloved Thule Backback was finished. Replaced it with a new Thule EnRoute and all I can say so far is that it is an improvement all around. None of which I really expected as the prior was already very well done. The EnRoute seems also bit more robust, so time will show it the 8 years can be beaten. 5

[Empty] I've used the En Route a few times. It's a combination laptop bag and on the go diaper bag. Perfect with the two compartments I can separate my belongings well.
