Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads, which helps increase performance and reliability.

WD Red Pro hard drives are designed to handle the rigorous demands of high-intensity 24/7 multi-user NAS environments and increase system durability.

Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures.

WD Red Pro drives include Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors that anticipate and proactively counteract disturbances caused by increased vibration. By dispersing excess vibration across the drive chassis, turbulence is minimized, performance is maintained, and drives are protected.

WD Red Pro hard drives include a multi-axis shock sensor to detect subtle shock events and automatically compensate with dynamic fly height technology to further protect the drives in NAS enclosures.

Western Digital stands behind their NAS storage solutions with the assurance of a limited 5-year limited warranty and world-class support services for hassle free data storage.

Q: 1. I’m a professional photographer and all of my images are stored via these large drives. My operating system is on a ssd, and when I first bring images in they are processed on my ssd drive. But one I store them, they are still accessed by my software (Lightroom and other Adobe products), and often I’m still retrieving, searching for and editing the images long after they were moved off my ssd drive. This drive will be wired directly into my mother board and PC that has 4 storage drives. What are the pros of the following two drives and cons for my situation. Which would you recommend? Thank you.

A: I think your question boils down to a comparison of an SSD vs a HDD. For backup there are many reasons to go with a hard drive. Price, Capacity. For the OS and Applications - we would suggest SSDs.

Q: 2. Is WD12TB Red Pro compatible with Synology DS920+? Thanks.

A: Yes, the WD12TB Red Pro is compatible with Synology DS920+.

Q: 3. Are Western Digital NAS drives compatible with the Lacie Big 5 NAS system? Thanks

A: Yes, theses drives would work with the Lacie Big 5

Q: 4. Does the OEM drive come with the same 5 year warranty that the retail kits come with from WD?

A: Yes, this drive comes with the same warranty as the retail kit. It carries a 5-Year Limited Warranty against defects from Western Digital.

Q: 5. What is the difference between OEM and Retail packaging? Thank you!

A: The OEM would come in a plain white or brown box, and the retail model would come in a manufacturers branded box

Q: 6. Which drives are installed in WD My Cloud Mirror Gen 2, the Red or Red Pro?

A: They would be the standard WD red hard drives.

Q: 7. Would these work in the DS1520+?

A: Yes, this WD 12TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (Retail), would work with the DS1520+.

Q: 8. If I replace the WD Red NAS 5400 RPM drives in a My Cloud EX2 Ultra with these, how much of a performance difference can I reasonably expect to see?

A: Almost no difference, unless you're using these drives as regular OS drives, where application read/write speed is more critical. If building a NAS I would recommend 5400s, the read speed is fine for streaming, they last longer than 7200s on average, and they're usually cheaper. I got these 7200 at a great price, so it made sense for me at the time.

Q: 9. What is the difference between the other Ironwolf NAS 10tb that i see listed on BHPhoto's website?

A: This model, the "Pro," includes a limited 2-year Data Recovery Service that helps you retrieve damaged data in the event of a mechanical error, accident, or natural disaster.

Q: 10. Will these work in a Drobo 8D?

A: According to the specifications from Drobo, the maximum volume size for the Drobo 8D is 128TB. This would mean that, theoretically, each bay could support up to 16TB. However, we wouldn’t be able to guarantee a drive like the WD 20TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD, B&H # WE201KFGXSPB, would work with the Drobo 8D and give you the full 20TB capacity.

[550 TB] I've been using WD Red series HDDs for almost 10 years on my NAS units and have been very happy with the performance and reliability. When I received a report that one of the 4 drives was dying after almost 10 years, it made sense to install the latest version of WD Red. As I expected, I slipped it into it slot and it booted right up and was at home immediately with the other disks in my RAID 5.

I would recommend this product to anyone needing a very reliable drive with an excellent operational life.

[65 G / 2.0 ms] First off, fast and safe shipping from B&H!

I am slowly upgrading the storage capacity in my Drobo 5N (also purchased from B&H years ago). There are a couple of things to note if you will be doing the same:

- My original config was 5 x 4TB drives, and I recently started running low on free space. If you want to increase capacity, and all current drives are the same size, you will have to replace TWO drives as mentioned here: http://dashboardhelp.drobo.com/guide/250/en/5N_Adding_Capacity_or_Drives.htm.

- At the time my 5N was originally configured, the firmware only supported 16TB total volume size. That said, after replacing 2 of the
existing 4TB drives with 2 10TB drives, I was left with unallocated space, which could not be utilized. The only way to take advantage of
the added space was to factory-restore the 5N after updating to the
latest firmware (which now supports 64TB max volume size).

As my 5N is used purely for backup, it wasn't a problem factory-restoring and copying everything over again. Otherwise, you will need to back up everything on the Drobo before restoring.

[550 TB] I bought this after reading reports of problems with the 5400 rpm Red. Of course you don't really know about things like this until many months have past.

[1.85 lb] Not sure what kind of a review I'm supposed to give here... I've had these drives for about a week and they are still running. So that's good. They are quite solidly built, the price is right, and I definitely needed the space. They do great as NAS storage, as well as data disks in a desktop computer. Just don't boot from them, not that you can't, just that it's not the most efficient use of the disks. That's all I've got.
