Ideal for use on film sets, for recording atmospheres, and as a sound-design tool, the Schoeps CMD 42 Digital Microphone Amplifier Colette Seriesis the digital microphone amplifier for the Schoeps Colette series. It is fully compatible with all Schoeps MK capsules and all Colette accessories such as RC tubes, CUT filters, active cables, and table stands. It is also compatible with Sound Devices A20-TX, Zaxcom TRX743, and Zaxcom TRX745 digital wireless transmitters. The CMD 42 is wirelessly controlled via the free Schoeps Remote App for iOS and Android.

The connection standard of the CMD 42 is AES42, a combination of AES3 and a 10V digital phantom power. The digital preamp is capable of running in either Mode 1 for simple one-mic setups or Mode 2 for multi-microphone setups. The CMD 42 has two overall modes of operation: Full for full DSP capabilities and Pure for no-DSP and low-latency operation. Full Mode offers all signal processing capabilities

  • Fixed sampling rate: 48 kHz
  • Supported commands: Digital Gain, Low Cut, Analog Pad, Channel Configuration (including Mono Upmix), Peak Limiter, Capsule Correction, Filter
  • Latency with Peak Limiter off: 104 samples (inherent delay = 2.16 ms)
  • Latency with Peak Limiter on: 152 samples (inherent delay = 3.16 ms)

Pure Mode is designed for low-latency operation and ensures that there is no signal processing active in the microphone

  • Supports all sampling frequencies up to 192 kHz (native, no upsampling)
  • Supported commands: Digital Gain, Sampling Rate, Analog Pad
  • Latency: 11 samples (inherent delay = 57 μs at 192 kHz)

The Remote App can be used to control the CMD 42. The app uses the speaker of your smartphone to send an acoustic signal that is understood by the CMD 42 microphone amplifier

  • Switch Mode: Full or Pure
  • Digital Gain: applies digital gain to the audio signal before the limiter
  • Low-Cut 24 dB/Oct (Full Mode only): the -3 dB cutoff frequency can be set between 20 and 160 Hz
  • Analog Pad: reduces the polarization voltage of the capsule in three steps. This allows you to achieve even higher maximum sound pressure levels without overdriving the input stage of the CMD 42
  • Channel configuration (Full Mode only): the CMD 42 provides a two-channel digital output signal, although there is only one capsule and one audio signal. Therefore, the sound engineer can choose the content of the redundant second channel
  • Peak Limiter (Full Mode only): the peak limiter limits the output signal to -0.5 dB-FS and prevents digital clipping after the digital gain
  • Capsule Correction (Full Mode only): for capsules that optionally contain a capsule memory module in which the properties of the capsule are stored, and which the CMD 42 can read out
  • Filter (Full Mode only): offers low-frequency equalization, proximity equalization, and omni equalization. The J filter / Ribbon mode emulates the character of a ribbon microphone. Parabolic filters compensate for the high-frequency boost which occurs when the Schoeps parabolic dish set is used with the MK 2 or MK 4 capsule
  • XT Filter (Pure Mode Only): the XT filter is a high-frequency boost which linearizes the frequency response of the microphone capsules at frequencies between 20 and 50 kHz

  • The CMD 42 is exactly the same length as a CMC 6, so most suspensions and windscreens will fit in the same way
  • The CMD 42 is only 10 g heavier than the CMC 6

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are you supposed to fold it with the reflectors zipped on or do you fold those separately? The instructions make it seem like it should be zipped on, but the pictures show the guy just folding the diffuser without the reflectors folded on. Thanks!

A: The easiest way to store the discs is with the sleeves on.

Q: 2. What screw size will the rack mount holes accept?

A: The 600W Platinum Series Public Address Amplifier Bogen PS600 (BH #BOPS600), requires the Bogen PSRPK Rackmount Installation Kit for Public Address Amplifiers in the Platinum Series, which uses standard 10/32" rack screws for installation.

Q: 3. Can this amp be used to power MCM 55-10345 tweeter array? These are not powered and can't be heard, or would some other small amp work? Any suggestions. Thanks, EYD.

A: Yes it can.

Q: 4. How long is this cable?

A: 18 (45cm)

Q: 5. how re fold 32 reflector disc?

A: Twist the center in a figure 8 and just keep twisting, It will eventually pop itself back into the full fold. Hope that helps.

Q: 6. Will this fit the Rode NTG5 ?

A: The W 140 foam windscreen is designed for use with the Schoeps CMIT5U and MiniCMIT microphones which both have a 21mm diameter while the NTG5 has a 19mm diameter, so the windscreen may be too loose. The W 140 is 5" long and the diameter for compatible microphones is listed as 41 to 50mm (Schoeps has confirmed that this information for the diameter measurement is correct, though it does seem unusual). We have not tested the W 140 on the NTG5. Since the chroma green W 140 is a special order item that is not returnable, you may want to hold off and test out one of the black or blue W 140 windscreens first, which are eligible for return. You may also want to try contacting Rode to ask if they have a chroma green foam windscreen available that will fit. You can reach Rode by phone at 562-364-7400. Their US offices are based in California.

Q: 7. Is the 32in the exact size for the translucent disk or is it a bit smaller?

A: 32" is the supplied size it can vary slightly as the item is spring steel and can be deformed slightly.

Q: 8. Is the cable that comes with the Super Shield? I need a replacement.

A: Yes, this is the short XLR cable that comes with the Rycote modular blimp kits.

Q: 9. I’m looking to use this to diffuse my LED panel light source, which is mounted to a light stand. What device can I use to hold up this diffusion disc?

A: Impact Telescopic Collapsible Reflector Holder B&H # IMLDHT

Q: 10. The back of the unit shows an FM antenna jack but there is no mention of an FM tuner in the description. Please clarify?

A: The Pyle Pro Mini Blue-Series Stereo 80W Power Amplifier with Bluetooth (BH # PYPTA22BT) FM antenna input is non-functioning and not mentioned or pictured in the owner's manual.

[8 Hz to 96 kHz] I am using this for recording violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and piano, and all sound great. I already own the mk4 and love it, but wanted something a little more directional that can reject some of the room noise, since I am not recording in a totally isolated environment. The mk41 sounds just as good as the mk4 and definitely cuts down on any background noise. Only downside is that I have less leeway to move around when recording, whereas with the mk4, which has a wider capture, it's a little more forgiving. But I got the mk41 specifically for this purpose to just focus on what's directly in front of it, and it's doing the job even better than expected without any loss of quality or musicality in the tone. Love it! And plus one for B+H's amazing customer service. They were extremely helpful.

[Matte Gray] I've only used a handful of boom mics in my day, this is clearly the best one, pun intended. Playing back audio from this mic in my studio sounds as if the talent is right in my room. It's a bit heavy on the price if you're used to mics in the $300 range, but man is it worth it.

[6 to 12 VDC] I got four of these with interest in buying 2 more for hookup to my recent purchase of the Sound Devices 788T. Woth every penny for the prestine none colored sound they produce.

[8 Hz to 96 kHz] The quality of this microphone is one of the best you can get in the industry. The price is a bit steep but the sound quality more than makes up for it.

[120 mA] In short: low self-noise, improved isolation from room reverb, balanced frequency response, needs an audio recorder with quality preamps

I used to run a shotgun mic into my Canon C70 for all my interviews, indoor or outdoor, and now my workflow and quality has improved dramatically. I find this microphone well balanced across the frequency range, with soft s sibilance and no boominess in low or mid-range frequencies. It does a slightly better job at isolating from room reverb, which results in greater source sound clarity. You need to pair this mic with the clean preamps of an equally exceptional audio recorder to really appreciate the sound, as the self-noise levels of your camera preamps can disguise how truly quiet this mic's self-noise actually is. It needed about 15db more gain than my shotgun mic, but between the audio recorder upgrade and this mic my noise floor is now -5db lower than running my shotgun straight into camera. What I hear through my headphones now is truly a natural mirror of real life sound and room tone, not merely an interpretation of it mixed with the hiss of camera preamps. Hard to describe until you A/B test for yourself, but it is the most natural sounding microphone I've ever used!
