Entering a new realm within the short telephoto lens market, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens Kitfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens Kitis an incredibly bright portrait-length lens designed for FX-format F-mount DSLRs. The f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over focus for shallow depth of field imagery. Maintaining clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range, the optical design utilizes extra-low dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, and a Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in strong lighting. Availing a range of unique possibilities for a telephoto lens, the combination of the 105mm focal length and fast maximum aperture greatly benefit portrait photographers as well as event shooters.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor that produces fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to manually override focus at any time for more selective control. An electromagnetic diaphragm is also featured for greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Short telephoto prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used on DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.

Awesomely fast f/1.4 maximum aperture enables precise control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.

Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are used in the optical construction to reduce a variety of chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity and color neutrality.

A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Fluorine coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the lens manufacture in Japan?

A: We prefer Japan or another country, but not China!!!

Q: 2. Will this lens work with a teleconverter?

A: Yes, this lens will be compatible with teleconverters.

Q: 3. Even though not mentioned, can this lens be defined as a true apochromatic lens? (not the Sigma definition, but the Zeiss, Cosina or Switar definition??

A: No, Nikon does not list it as a true apochromatic lens.

Q: 4. How this lans compare to the 85 1.4 ? Thanks

A: Both are very good lenses, it is more a matter of personal preference. Sharp, bright, fast, what's not to like about either one? Other than the focal length difference, not much to differentiate the two. If you have the 85, don't get the 105. If you are getting a new lens in this class, get the 105. One could be happy with either one.

Q: 5. I was wondering if this lens is compatible with the Nikon D500 camera. Thank You!

A: Yes. Fantastic sharp lens. I have used on D500 many times!

Q: 6. How this lens compare to the 85 1.8 ?. Difficult to compare between f/1.4 and F/1.8, any direct experience ?

A: Before getting into quality differences between the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens, a very significant different is the focal length. The perspective from a 105mm lens is different than that from a 85mm lens. This is very much dependent on personal preference and specific application. Aside from this, there are a few benefits to the 105mm. A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting. Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates, though double check that your camera is compatible with lenses that have this. The 105mm has a better build quality overall. The f1.4 aperture with the longer focal length will provide a shallower depth of field than is possible on the 85mm lens. Overall the 105mm f/1.4E is optically better than the 85mm f/1.8G lens.

Q: 7. Any comparison between Nikon 105mm F/1.4 vs Nikon 85mm f/18G -- which one is better as a portrait lens?

A: Both the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G and this AF-S 105mm f/1.4E ED are very sharp. With the 105mm, you would get the slightly longer focal length and 2/3 of a stop brighter maximum aperture. While those two factors can be helpful, this lens would have the electromagnetic diaphragm which is most compatible with the newer Nikon bodies.

Q: 8. I have a nikon D850. Is this a compatible lens and full frame?

A: Yes, I own D850 and 105 mm lens for a few weeks. The lens is compatible with D850 and D810 as well.

Q: 9. Can you recommend a lens case (such as Lowepro) for this lens?

A: The Lowepro Lens Case 11 x 14cm (Black), BH #LOLC1114, is a great option for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens.

Q: 10. Can this lens be used with a NIKON D90 , and use all the F stops?. Electronic focus?

A: per NikonUSAThe lens incorporates an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism. The following cameras are compatible with this lens:D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1

[f/1.4] This was my first professional-quality lens, and I love it. This lens gives images a lyrical character, with a soft, gently blurred background. It is extremely sharp wide open, with creamy bokeh and bright colors. So far, I've used it to photograph portraits, landscapes, plants, and even perched birds. It performs well in any conditions - drizzle, low light, scorching hot days. Although it is heavy and a bit slow to focus (even on my D500), it is much smaller, lighter, and more unobtrusive than a 70-200 f/2.8. This is one of the magic lenses you buy for their rendering abilities - it makes you feel that every shot should be deliberate.

[Full-Frame] I don't know where to start without sounding too gushy. Having used Nikon and most of their lenses over the last 40 years working for a major newspaper, this current 105mm is, IMHO, the best one I've used. Shot a few test pictures on my Nikon D810 along with some paid assignments that included a couple portraits. Everything has been outstanding. Nearly everything has been shot wide open at 1.4. I bought this to use in low light situations and portraits. It's exceeding my expectations on avery shot.

[Full-Frame] I love it. Have used the 85mm1.4 for years and decided to pull the trigger on this bad boy. I absolutely love it; my only regret is not having this sooner.

[105mm] King of all lenses for bokeh lovers. Sharp even wide open and beautiful colors.
Probably the heaviest lens I've ever owned

[0.13x] Best portrait lens I have bought. Beautiful bokeh and fast focus. Just a little bit heavy compared to other portrait lenses.

[9, Rounded] It has the most beautiful bokeh. If you are in the portrait business, this is the best one. I like the compression, it is not too much and your customers will be happy.

[0.13x] This lens produces the best bokeh and sharpness of any Nikon lens. The only contenders may be the Zeiss Milvus and Otus lenses, but they lack autofocus. I initially purchased a Zeiss Milvus 85mm to be my new flagship portrait lens, but I found that without autofocus, I regularly missed focus just slightly enough that, with the very thin depth of field, the lens's very good wide open sharpness could not be discerned over lesser lenses. This lens has the autofocus the Zeiss lenses do not, allowing for a near 100% hit rate for focusing. The 105mm f/1.4E renders stunning color with excellent contrast, minimal distortion, and just a bit of (often pleasing but easily removable) vignetting when wide open. The sharpness of this lens is very, very impressive wide open, jaw dropping when stopped down to f/2 or f/2.8. At f/4, the image quality is so absolutely razor sharp across the entire frame, the image could practically cut you. After f/4, sharpness decreases very slightly, remaining stunning through f/8 and admirable through f/11. This is definitely a lens people buy for the wider apertures though, so I'm not sure why you'd be shooting at f/16, willingly at least. This is perhaps the best, dedicated portrait lens I can imagine for a Nikon shooter. The only lens I might recommend buying over this is the 70-200mm f/2.8E because of it's versatility. This lens is an absolute dream to work with, and it is a beast of engineering/manufacturing. If you want/need it, save for it. Don't try to compromise on a lesser lens because you'll be dissatisfied with whatever you buy instead until you ditch it to ultimately buy this anyway. If you have the money already, you will never regret buying this, even for a second. Two disclaimers: this lens is huge. It is heavy and wide. Second, autofocus, while entirely adequate, is not blazing fast. This is to be expected considering how large and heavy this lens's elements are. If Nikon tried to make autofocus faster, it wouldn't be accurate.

[Autofocus] This is an amazing portrait lens and I am totally in love with it. It is heavy but worth it's weight in gold

[Nikon F] Since adding this lens to my collection it easily has become my favorite! This is on my camera 90% of the time! This lens is extremely sharp! I would purchase this again in a heartbeat. Definitely a must have!

[105mm] The most fabulous lens I have ever had. Very tasty and soft bokeh, super-realistic portraits, quite sharp even at 1.6. Just be prepared to run a lot with your legs for amazing shots :))
