A: Yes you can use the audio out jack to monitor but you can't plug a headphone directly in the audio out jack and expect it to work as a headphone driver. The audio out jack is at microphone level and is matched to the microphone input on a DSLR camera. You would need an extra pre-amp to monitor the audio at line or headphone level from the audio out jack. However, the Saramonic BMCC-A01 has a dedicated headphone output with a volume control that works easily for audio monitoring of incoming signals. If you want to monitor incoming signals and audio playback from the camera when needed, then use the headphone jack on the camera as the place to plug in your headphones.

In terms of audio input selection, if your camera can accept 4 channels of audio, you can switch input select to IN1-IN2 and all input channels will be sent to the camera. If your camera can only accept 2 channels of audio, then you can use inputs 1 and 2, or input 3.

This will allow for virtually no degradation of signal. Currently, the analog audio is converted within your camera. which I am sure is providing good quality audio, but this is another improvement you may want to choose if you upgrade to the new camera.

A: We would not recommend this set up due to two reasons. 1) Since phantom power may not travel properly through a y cable, you would have to power the mic before the splitter , utilizing a separate phantom power supply. 2) By splitting a mic level signal with a y cable, the level going to each input will already be reduced. Any further reduction in level could further noise into the signal. If you want a backup recording, we would suggest using a separate audio recorder such as the Tascam DR40x which would offer a separate safety track recording.
