Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. My son does video work for school shows on 2 canon xh-a1s cameras. He wants to record onto memory cards instead of Mini DV tapes. Would this product achieve this?

A: The Canon XH-A1S has analog video outputs while the Video Assist has HDMI and SDI digital video inputs for capture. This will only work if you use an analog to HDMI or SDI converter in between.

Q: 2. Does the Video Assist charge the LP-E6N batteries when it's connected to a 12v ac power source?

A: Yes. When connected to AC power, the batteries can be charged in parallel while the Video Assist is still being used.

Q: 3. Any Idea on a Release Time Frame?

A: There is no date availability at this time unfortunately. Please watch this page for further announcements.

Q: 4. Will the 12v power out of the URSA Mini power this monitor? And if so will the cables supplied with either product do the job or will an additional cable be required?

A: Since the Video Assist has just been announced, power options are still being worked out. The 4 pin XLR on the right side is one possibility. However, a power splitter would have to be made since that outlets primarily purpose to power the Viewfinder. Another solution could be powering the Video Assist via the V-mount or Gold mount battery plate D-tap outlet. It may at first have to be a custom D-tap to Video Assist cable to make this happen. Watch for further announcements regarding this product.

Q: 5. Can anyway say if there is still the 64 minute issue?

A: There is still a file size cap on these units. The cap varies with the recording format and selected codec. The file will close and immediately start a new file to continue the recording without dropping a single frame.

Q: 6. will it record 10 bit 422 n-log on the nikon z6?

A: It should as long as the video output is set for supported frame rates and resolutions. We have no direct experience with this mode.

Q: 7. Can this unit record 40 channels at once, or does it just have 40 inputs and can record only 24 channels simultaneously? And could you please add a picture of the back of the unit?

A: Although the JoeCo Bluebox workstation Interface Recorder (#BBWR24B) supports 40 simultaneous inputs, it will only record 24 channels at a time.

Q: 8. Can this unit record to both a external drive and a computer simultaneously? I believe I saw two USB ports in the rear panel picture.

A: The JoeCo Bluebox Workstation Interface Recorder (MFR# BBWR24MP) is an awesome product, offering pristine 24bit/96kHz audio both to and from your DAW and simultaneous back up of all source recordings, as it is a standalone multi-track field recorder as well.

Q: 9. Will this do 3:2 pulldown?

A: If you do need 3:2 converison, the announced Video Devices PIX-E Series external recorders/monitors are the first known that can offer this feature.

Q: 10. Will a 7D HDMI output be capable of recording 422 10 bit with this monitor?

A: The Blackmagic Design Video Assist will do 10-bit 4:2:2 video up to 1080p60 to high-speed U1 SDHC/XC memory cards using industry-standard Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, or Proxy) or Avid DNxHD codecs. In other words, if it gets a video signal, it will record 10-bit 4:2:2.If you have the Canon 7D Mark II, you are in luck and will be able to do what you wish. However, if you have a Canon 7D you cannot use any external recording because it does not have a clean HDMI out like the 7D Mark II and the 5D Mark III.

[77.16 lb] Works very well, makes it so I can record my laptop on the go without a performance hit. Eventually I may use on a camera, but for my needs currently, works well.

[4096 x 2304] This multi-viewer is perfect for it's features. The loop through of the inputs makes it better then the 16 input model and the 4 input model allowing you to preview camera shots or records and still feedback into your system. I use it in 6 way and 4 way output, but you can configure it in many different ways. it has a hdmi output for local monitor and two additional SDI outputs which you can then send to the Producer or whomever needs to see the MV. Highly recommend for your workbox.

[16:9] We use this product as a multi-viewer for remote tapings. The fact that is easily configurable makes it a great tool since we rarely use the same set-up. The USB download for controlling the unit is great and very easy to use.

[4096 x 2304] I LOVE the screen. It's fantastic and it makes me wish I had one this good for watching college football. It is super clear, great color, very bright. The touch interface works very well and is super intuitive. I'm pretty sure anyone who has used a phone from this century could find exactly what they need. Histogram is nice, audio meters are nice, simple battery meter. There is only one SD card slot so that may be a problem for some, also the card capacity is not on the 'home' screen. It is a single swipe away but may annoy some. You will need fast cards to record on. As a non-scientific example I recorded onto SanDisk Extreme (45MB/s) at 1080p 59.94 in ProRes just fine but dropped frames with ProResHQ. I feel a little anxious about having a fan on the back. I'm worried about how it will do if dirt or water gets in; the noise is minimal. So if you're looking for a magic wonder box that can scale, focus assist, make you a latte and generally hold your hand then this probably isn't for you. If you're looking for a inexpensive way to record high bit-rate video then it's hard to beat. I own quite a few BMD products and it is my experience that they keep getting better over time. Firmware updates add features and suddenly my investment has become more valuable. I expect that from this product but I guess only Grant Petty knows for sure. I don't usually like to review products that I've only had for a few days but since there are so few of these in the world I'm hoping to be of some help to those of you considering a purchase. *I have been testing with an FS100

[Yes] Works great connecting it up to bmpcc. Picture is perfect and focusing is pretty easy with full hd display despite focus assist being mia. Shows audio levels and live histogram like bmpcc. Obviously not a whole lot of features in it now but bm has been pretty solid with that before so here's hoping.

[77.16 lb] I've had this monitor now for 2 weeks, and I've used it on one shoot. The cameras I've used it with are a Nikon D810 and a Blackmagic Pocket Camera. As with the BMPCC and other Blackmagic products, it's already an excellent product, but I expect that it will improve further with firmware updates. And also as with the BMPCC, I don't know of anything else that can compete for quality at the price. So far: * The image quality on the monitor is excellent in terms of sharpness. I bought this primarily to judge focus, and it delivers even without a peaking feature (which I expect is coming). Color is not accurate, but that's true of most other products at this price level. I hope that color improves with software. * Solid build quality. The only monitor of comparable build in this price range that I know is the slightly pricier SmallHD DP4. * The SDI and HDMI inputs. While I wish it had the more robust locking full-sized SDI, there are very few monitors with SDI capability AT ALL at this price level, and the only option I tried had a very poor image. * The built-in ProRes recorder is great. It allows me to get longer record times out of my D810 (it may improve image quality as well, but I hadn't noticed). I already had invested in the appropriate cards for my BMPCC. It also was a life-saver for the BMPCC when I unexpectedly ran out of room on the card I had in the camera-- I just started the recorder just before the card ran out, seamlessly joined the clips into one long clip in my editing software. So I'll look forward to updates that enable additional features (peaking, perhaps more exposure tools) and hope that one also improve color accuracy. But I can already recommend this device wholeheartedly at this price level. Your choice is really probably just about whether or not you need to step up to a unit that can record 4k.

[77.16 lb] This is a GREAT product for installations where a few inputs are needed.
It's hard to mess up operation.
The one precaution I will state, is that the POWER INDICATOR LIGHT IS GREEN when the unit is OFF....
It is BLUE when it is ON...
This is FRUSTRATING for people.. Even during installations, where I've forgotten - and troubleshot audio processing for 10-15 minutes before remembering this stupid feature.
The unit being POWERED OFF is the ONLY reason that I've been called for troubleshooting.. I wish the power indicator LED was just OFF or RED, when the unit is switched off...
Other than that little rant - I LOVE this product.
It is my preferred simple in-rack mixer for stupid-proof installs.

[4096 x 2304] We needed to produce a last minute Facebook livestream. Trusting Blackmagic brand from previous experience, we ordered both the ATEM Mini Pro and this 5 Video Assist. Short learning curve, easy setup, and the show went off without a hitch. Both recommend and endorse.
