The 58mm Tiffen MCS Glimmerglass Filter 58mm Grade 1/2from Tiffen MCS Glimmerglass Filter 58mm Grade 1/2is a diffusion filter for portrait and beauty shots that helps soften skin details, blemishes and wrinkles. It also produces glowing highlights and a mild reduction in contrast for a more ethereal appearance. The grade 1/2 diffusion provides a very small amount of softening and overall image alteration. It provides a more cinematic look to stills and video when using digital cameras. This glass filter features a sparkling appearance when viewed from the front, which models may find appealing.

This filter is part of Tiffen's Magnetic Control System (MCS) which allows filters to be swapped instantly rather than being slowly and tediously unscrewed and screwed in like conventional filters, saving valuable time when shooting in the moment. Each filter includes a magnetic mounting ring that allows it to quickly and securely attach to the front of a lens with no tools required. The separately available MCS step-up rings can adapt to the filter threads of almost any lens for added versatility. The filter set comes with a magnetic front cap to protect the filter and lens, plus a rear magnetic cap to protect the filter when not in use.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Have Canon EOS 18-55mm lens, thread size 58mm. Will this lens hood fit and work okay?

A: No, Sensei PRO 58mm Aluminum Lens Hood BH #SELHM58 works best for lenses 50mm and Longer (Full Frame). For the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens BH #CA1855EFS, we would recommend the Sensei PRO 58mm Wide Angle Aluminum Lens Hood BH #SELHMW58 https://bhpho.to/2Y6OWDk.

Q: 2. Will this lens hood cause vignetting with 24mm full frame lens?

A: This hood is suitable for 50mm or higher. It may cause vignetting on wide angle lenses like a 24mm lens.

Q: 3. Good morning, this model goes in a 50mm yongnuo, has a diameter of 58mm? Thank you

A: Hi--yes, you can use this hood for the YN 50mm f/1.8 II Lens, which has a 58mm filter thread size.

Q: 4. Does the recommended accessory 62mm lens cap fit on the open end of the hood? (FWIW, a 55mm cap fits on similar hood that is designed to fit lenses with 49mm filter size.) If not, what if any cap will fit the hood?

A: Yes, the front threads of the hood are 62mm.

Q: 5. Is this lens adaptable without electrical contacts, i.e. is it manually focusable and is there an aperture lever on the mount?

A: No.

Q: 6. Will this work on the Canon Rebel T5?

A: Hi! It'll depend on the lens actually. Not the camera. If you have the basic kit of the t5 with the 18-55 lens then yes. It will. The hood will fit any 58mm lens. In my case I also have a t5 and two lens with 58mm so it works with both lenses!

Q: 7. What is the height/length of this lens hood (less male screw threads)?

A: Length is less than 10mm for Heliopan 39mm short lens hood.

Q: 8. How do you put these on the unit?

A: The softbox on the back has straps that work with Velcro that keep it on the light.

Q: 9. I want to use a center pinch lens cap on the front of this filter. Are the front threads really 58mm as well as the rear threads? Thank you for your time.

A: I bought the 39mm version of this hood, and on my shade both front and rear threads are 39mm.Not having the 58mm version, I can't say the same with any certainty.

Q: 10. Can this lens hood be used with a lens filter?

A: Yes, Just be mindful that filter being used must have 58 mm front threads in order to attach hood.

[0.22 lb] I was looking for a filter that would bloom the highlights and practical light sources without decreasing the overall contrast of the image, and I think this was just the filter I wanted. Compared to Black Pro Mist and especially Cinebloom, the shadow levels and sharpness are maintained with this filter. The diffusion is just enough for me. To me, it seems it blooms the highlights and light sources just enough to look like my image was shot on film, but without being too dramatic or noticeable. I think if I were going for a more dreamy look, I'd go with a higher Glimmerglass strength or use something like Cinebloom.

[Aluminum] The Glimmerglass 1/2 is nice. The sharp edges are reduced but I still have detail. And being able to quickly pop off the filter for certain shots is awesome!

[Glass] So I have used the GlimmerGlass series a lot as a large matte-box filter on the cinema cameras. But sometimes I go and shoot inserts on a lighter setup with my FX6 and a Zoom lens. For that purpose this filter is absolutely perfect. If the 1/2, 3/4 and 1/4 become available as 82mm filters I will purchase them.

[0.22 lb] Great diffusion filter that adds soft contrast to take off the digital edge while retaining sharpness. Would highly recommend over other diffusion filters.

[Glass] Lots of reviews suggest the 1/8 for a more 'filmic look but I found that I needed the 1/4 strength to get that effect.

Note that focal length and the quality of the light itself will impact the outcome.

A note regarding the GG1: This provides a very noticeable effect in most cases. Maybe a tad too much for everyday use.

Tiffen needs a magical filter that works on the jpeg but leaves the raw alone !

[Glass] Any time I decide on diffusion filters, the biggest considerations for me are the strength of halation and the amount of contrast I'm looking for. I usually default to Hollywood Black Magic as my standard diffusion filter. When I want something stronger and a big more vintage feeling I'll reach for Black Pro Mist. When I want something much more subtle, I'll go for Glimmerglass because the halation is under much better control than the other two. I usually aim for a 1 strength when I want to see the effect. Even then, it doesn't feel too strong.

[Glass] Works well so far, and is less obscene than even 1/4 black pro mist can be. And price is fair. Now why do these filters cost 500% more in rectangular shape?

[0.22 lb] Tiffen Filters are always the best when it comes to build quality, reliability and options they provide. I am super happy with my 2 Set of Glimmerglass!!:) They make the image naturally gloomy without washing out the entire scene.

Also B&H did a perfect job on shipping and customer contact! I live in Germany and my package arrived only 4 days after my order was placed. Thanks, you guts are the best!
