Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this hold most common film holders? I see someone posted a link to a 2 pack for $100. I would like to try and limit the price if possible. Thank you.

A: Yes, any of the standard 4x5 cut film holders will work quite nicely. I have 15 or 20 of them that I load at one time, so there is no need to do so in the field.

Q: 2. I am familiar with using RC paper in a dark room... but never used 4x5 film.. How is the film/paper removed and developed... do you need your own darkroom?

A: Hi Joe:Perhaps the easiest and most straightforward way to process 4x5 film is to process it exactly the same as you would RC paper with the following exceptions:1. Processing must be done in complete darkness (no safelight). 2. Have the same three trays: developer, stop bath, and fixer. Use a film developer instead of a paper developer.3. Mixing a quart of developer for an 8x10 tray should be ample.4. Use a timer with fluorescent glow to time development. Follow the instructions for time listed for your particular developer/film combination. A website containing The Massive Development Chart online (do a search) might be helpful here.5. Wearing protective gloves, gently push the film around in the developer for the allotted time and then transfer to the stop bath, and then to the fixer. Remember to keep the lights off and be in complete darkness until you complete the fixer stage. As a suggestion, you might want to place the 8 x 10 developer tray into a 16 x 20 tray filled with water at 68 degrees. That will help to maintain the temp in the developer tray throughout the length of the process.Hope that helps you get started. All the best to you!

Q: 3. required accessories?

A: It needs a fairly sturdy tripod, and you will need some 4x5 film holders as you would any 4x5 camera. You don't need a Black Cat Exposure Guide, but I find mine handy in the field, and easy to use. The only other requirement is lots of patience!!!Hope this helps! Buy one and have tons O' fun!!!Mark

Q: 4. What is the pinhole diameter?

A: The pinhole is 1/64" for the Lensless 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera (Baltic Birch).

Q: 5. Would this pinhole camera accommodate the LomoGraflok 45 Instant Back?

A: The Lensless 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera (Baltic Birch) is not designed to accommodate an instant film back, which may be too thick to fit--the length and height is compatible, however, so you may be able to fix the camera to fit the instant film back in some way.

Q: 6. Which Film backs are compatible with this?

A: No film back needed , you mount the 4X5 film in the box

Q: 7. Why use a film holder with this camera?

A: There is no film holder needed for this camera, as you infer. The holders listed under accessories, are listed in error.

Q: 8. Does the camera come with the exposure calculator and the black box to hold exposed film , or it's just the camera ? I saw the kit here on B&H but I wouldn't use the film anyway , just the photo paper .

A: the Iford Obscura Pinhole Camera does not include an exposure calculator, or a black box to hold exposed media.

Q: 9. How do I determine my exposure using 400 speed film?

A: I carry a copy of the following chart. ( You can google for Mr. Pinhole, the site has a link to the calculator. No links are allowed in answers)f 2.8f 8f 16f 64f 2301/128000 Secs1/16000 Secs1/4000 Secs1/250 Secs1/15 Secs1/64000 Secs1/8000 Secs1/2000 Secs1/125 Secs1/8 Secs1/32000 Secs1/4000 Secs1/1000 Secs1/60 Secs1/4 Secs1/16000 Secs1/2000 Secs1/500 Secs1/30 Secs1/2 Secs1/8000 Secs1/1000 Secs1/250 Secs1/15 Secs1/2 Secs1/4000 Secs1/500 Secs1/125 Secs1/8 Secs2 Secs1/2000 Secs1/250 Secs1/60 Secs1/4 Secs3 Secs1/1000 Secs1/125 Secs1/30 Secs1/2 Secs7 Secs1/500 Secs1/60 Secs1/15 Secs1 Secs13 Secs1/250 Secs1/30 Secs1/8 Secs2 Secs26 Secs1/125 Secs1/15 Secs1/4 Secs4 Secs53 Secs1/60 Secs1/8 Secs1/2 Secs8 Secs2 Mins 45 Secs1/30 Secs1/4 Secs1 Secs16 Secs4 Mins 30 Secs1/15 Secs1/2 Secs2 Secs33 Secs7 Mins 1 Secs1/8 Secs1 Secs4 Secs1 Mins 5 Secs14 Mins 3 Secs1/4 Secs2 Secs8 Secs2 Mins 10 Secs28 Mins 6 Secs1/2 Secs4 Secs16 Secs4 Mins 21 Secs56 Mins 13 Secs1 Secs8 Secs33 Secs9 Mins 42 Secs2 Hrs 52 Mins2 Secs16 Secs1 Mins 5 Secs17 Mins 24 Secs4 Hrs 45 Mins4 Secs33 Secs2 Mins 10 Secs35 Mins 49 Secs7 Hrs 30 Mins8 Secs1 Mins 5 Secs4 Mins 21 Secs1 Hrs 10 Mins15 Hrs 60 Mins16 Secs2 Mins 10 Secs9 Mins 42 Secs2 Hrs 19 Mins30 Hrs 59 Mins32 Secs4 Mins 21 Secs17 Mins 24 Secs5 Hrs 39 Mins60 Hrs 59 Mins1 Mins 4 Secs9 Mins 42 Secs35 Mins 49 Secs9 Hrs 17 Mins120 Hrs 57 Mins2 Mins 8 Secs17 Mins 24 Secs1 Hrs 10 Mins19 Hrs 35 Mins240 Hrs 55 MinsIt allows me to meter the scene using an exposure meter ( or another camera ). If you are using 400 speed film choose ISO 400 on the meter or camera. Then cross reference the reading vs the chart for f/230.I have another chart that shows me the additional time required because of the film's reciprocity failure rate. (This will be specific to the film you are using.)

Q: 10. DO I have to carry a dark bag to load and unload 1 sheet of film for every picture?

A: You do not need a a light tight changing bag. You can load these holders in your darkroom: https://bhpho.to/2bHTGqE

[200mm] This kit is complete and the components are top rate. The camera is simple, well thought out yet sturdy, and lightweight. I've taken several images with it and I'm extremely pleased with the results. Even the supplied exposure calculator is accurate when checked against a pinhole exposure app I have on my phone. This is a fantastic way to enter the world of pinhole photography. You won't be disappointed.

[200mm] i have a 4x5 camera from same company, they are well built and give clear images, can wait to use and share and image, would only add a handle

[f/330] This kit not only comes with the camera, but film and paper, so don't worry that it's $99. I was going to build(ha!) my own pinhole camera, but why? This one is beyond anything I could have taped together: the magnets work as expected and it's sturdy. The light guide works - and you can be flexible - the only learning curve is framing, but that too will soon come together! Have fun!

[f/330] Really easy to load 4x5 sheet film. The film is held firmly in place by the 2 camera halves which cleverly uses magnets to make a right fit. Black textured surface. The shutter, again using magnets, slides open and closed with no slack. Very nicely engineered. A FOV sticker works. Also included is an exposure calculator which worked the first time I tried it. Using ilford Ortho plus my first exposure was stunning. Kudos to Ilford. Love that infinite depth of field.

[f/330] The makers at Ilford got this model right. It was simple, fun and easy to operate. Explanations were clear and easy to follow in the supplied booklet. Would be good if they offered a complete set with all the processing chemicals in crystalline form with dilution instructions.

[f/330] This is a great product - but you have to be willing to work at it. I love how simple Ilford has made playing around with old photo techniques. Truth be told, anyone can make one of these - but it's nice to know there's a company that is out there making these in one simple package. IT's great to explore this type of photo making.
