[1.725 lb] Everyone is aware that a large number of drives are compatible with the Synology NAS devices, but the main reason I bought the Synology drives is that they allowed firmware updates without removing them and mounting them in an external computer for update. During the startup of my new NAS there was indeed a firmware update installed on the drives. The performance specs are enterprise grade. All information I have seen says that the drives were made by Toshiba and the firmware customized by Synology. I was surprised to see a WD logo on the inside of the shippers that all four of my drives arrived in. 5

[180 TB] Almost all Raid arrays are limited to multiples of the capacity of the smallest disk drive in the group. This was an economical way to get my array up to 4T disks to eliminate that semi-hidden (if you fail to read the fine print) reduction in overall, array capacity. The second limit on RAID arrays is the cache size/speed. With 3 of these 4T disks I was able to switch out my older 2T 64MB cache drives for a new cache size of 256MB which means a bigger chunk of data can be written to the drive significantly increasing in effective disk/array speed. 5

[12 TB] All you can say about a large hard drive is that it seems to work and doesn't make weird noises, right? But ultimately a few will fail, which is why I'm using them in Synology's hybrid RAID. I had four 18TB drives from another manufacturer in my desktop, and one failed in the first week, which is mostly bad luck, but ouch. 5
