Using 8 (required AAs) adds quite a bit of weight to the camera and I believe you are better off just carrying around a couple of spare EN EL-15s to use instead, but each to his own. Bottom line: they work fine.

A: The box includes the grip, a tray for 8 AA batteries a tray for 1 en-el15 battery. A: I see on line that 450 is the estimated number of shots. I use the Nikon EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion Battery in the grip and have only once needed the in-camera battery, have depleted the grip battery. On that shoot I exceeded 1500 shots and didn't use a Flash or LiveView. Hope that helps.
