Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the cache size of these drives?

A: There is 256MB Cache on this Seagate 4TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD.

Q: 2. Hey there, is this compatible with OWC Drive Dock? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1288284-REG/owc_other_world_computing_

A: While the Seagate 16TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, OEM) could be mounted in the OWC Drive Dock, it is a NAS drive intended to be used in a NAS, so it is not meant to be used as direct attached storage, and is not a HDD we would recommend. I'd recommend using the Seagate 16TB Exos X16 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal HDD instead. See: https://bhpho.to/2OW26Uj

Q: 3. Would these work on a DS1520+ ?

A: Yes. This Seagate 14TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, 2-Pack), would be compatible with the DS1520+.

Q: 4. Is this 18Tb IronWolf Pro ST18000NE000 compatible with Synology DS420+ ? Thanks!

A: The Seagate 18TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III Internal NAS HDD is currently not listed as a compatible drive on the Synology compatibility list.

Q: 5. Are these drives system pull or demos? If they are system pull, how long have they been used?

A: These drives are not used, open box, or pull. They are factory new drives that have not been previously used.

Q: 6. will this work with synology ds720+. iplan to use 2 of them?

A: Yes, you can use this with the DS720+. The Ironwolf Pro drives are very good for NAS usage.

Q: 7. Is it possible that these Ironwolf Pro drives will be added to the compatibility list for the Synology DS923+ at some future date? If so, any idea how long until they are confirmed? Or is it unlikely that these will be deemed compatible?

A: Synology does not test all drives from all manufacturers. You are welcome to reach out to them to request that they test the drive but we have found them to work perfectly fine with the Synology units.

Q: 8. Will this drive work with Windows 7 Ult Ed on old laptop with I7 processsor, 32GB ram, etc ?

A: This drive is not suitable for a laptop.

Q: 9. Many external docks have a 10 TB limit. What external dock do you recommend for this 22TB Drive?

A: Must I use the USB-C Version? Will the standard USB A to B work the same?

Q: 10. I’m a professional photographer and all of my images are stored via these large drives. My operating system is on a ssd, and when I first bring images in they are processed on my ssd drive. But one I store them, they are still accessed by my software (Lightroom and other Adobe products), and often I’m still retrieving, searching for and editing the images long after they were moved off my ssd drive. This drive will be wired directly into my mother board and PC that has 4 storage drives. What are the pros of the following two drives and cons for my situation. Which would you recommend? Thank you.

A: I think your question boils down to a comparison of an SSD vs a HDD. For backup there are many reasons to go with a hard drive. Price, Capacity. For the OS and Applications - we would suggest SSDs.

[1.82 lb] These drives work great in my Synology 6 Bay Nas -

[24 TB] This just plugs straight into a Synology NAS. It gives a warning about it not being on the approved compatibility list, but works just fine.
If you're ADDING this to a NAS which already has drives in it, remember that it can only add as much storage as the next-largest disk in the array. If you add one of these to an array containing 18TB disks, it can only add 18TB to total storage. If you add two, then they become backups for each other and you can use the full amount of space. This is also dependent on which RAID scheme you are using, but everyone with a Synology is probably using SHR mode.

[550 TB] I have been using IronWolf Pro drives in a couple NAS devices for over 5 years and they've been very reliable. These are new, but two sets of smaller capacity drives were rock solid.

[550 TB] I purchased 5 of these for use in in a Synology 1522. As others have warned, you get a warning message but after accepting, the Synology shows these as healthy and has no issues using them. Write performance in a RAID 6 has no trouble maxing a 1GbE connection. I’m sure 2.5 would be no issue. Internal read/write speeds during the array build were 1.3GB/s so each drive was yielding about 250MB/s.

I did have one arrive DOA. B&H exchange for a replacement was painless. Once the replacement arrived, no issues.

Other reviews have commented on noise. These are quiet as compared to the 6 - 16TB Exos drives in my 1621. I’m sure in a dead silent room these have mechanical noise but this shouldn’t be noticeable if placed in a closet or out of the way.

Overall, I’m very happy with the 24TB Ironwolf’s and would purchase again.
