It is powered by the camera directly through the hot shoe and provides two XLR inputs for using professional microphones, and there is an additional 3.5mm stereo audio input for alternative mic options.

The unit features a control panel with a clear cover that sports numerous physical dials and controls for changing the levels, gain, and low cut filter of each input individually. It also supports high-resolution recording formats up to 96 kHz and 32-bit float, and it provides 48V phantom power to either the dual XLR inputs or to the 3.5mm input. Q: 10. Will this attach to lumix s5 when smallrig or niceyrig cage used?

A: The question will depend on the specific camera rig you purchase, as the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter must connect to the camera's hot shoe for usage, and the cage used must provide enough clearance for the XLR Microphone Adapter. If you are looking for cages that would work with this adapter, a few options that would work for your usage needs would be either the SmallRig 2052 Cage with Helmet Kit for Panasonic LUMIX GH5/5S & DMW-XLR1, B&H # SM2052, the Movcam Panasonic GH5 Cage, B&H # MOV3033501, the Movcam Cage Kit for Panasonic GH5, B&H # MOMOV3033500, or the CAME-TV Protective Cage Plus for GH5, B&H # CAGH5PLUS.

[Camera] So nice to slap on the top of my S1H and have handy audio controls with XLR connection! I've wanted this for years... Not sure why I waited to buy one.

[6.8 x 4.4 x 3"] All about sound quality to me. It has a really nice, fat sound for what it is. Not studio grade, of course, but very good. Have used it weekly for about 2 years.

[10 to 80%] I'm shooting YouTube videos for charity, which involves a fair amount of work with lav mikes. I've ended up with a pair of Sennheiser lavs transmitting to XLR receivers that I can plug into the DMW-XLR1 adapter, which I use on a new a Panasonic GH5 M2. I've used it once for a 35 minute recording of an instructor. I was able to quickly adjust the volume as the instructor raised her voice to talk to the class and monitor the volume in the camera viewfinder. The audio is great. Panasonic has designed a system where the camera and the adapter work together without a lot of cords or complications. It makes audio simple. I'm a one man band, and I love simple.

[10 to 80%] My only issues is the small connection point with the hot shoe making it a spot that can easily break given the size of the top load. It's a fairly secure connection though.

[Camera] This solves so many needs in such a clean and tidy package. It feels a little light and fragile, I kind of wish it had a metal body for strength, but the capabilities are outstanding. Sound quality through this is great, and power and signal through the hot shoe is $$$.

[Black] I am using this on the Panasonic S1H and it is a must to get the 24 bit, 96 htz audio from my Lectrosonic and Sennheiser gear. Hot shoe connect and tucks away under the SmallRig Cage handle. Worth the money.

[6.8 x 4.4 x 3"] 32 bit float and a third channel 1/8 input are fantastic upgrades. There are a couple quirks in menu settings on the GH7 that I had to figure out because there seems to be no documentation.
#1 32bit float is unavailable if 4ch Audio Recording menu is set to XLR+Camera. That one is probably obvious.
#2 If 4ch Audio Recording menu is set to XLR, the channel selection switch at the far right of the adapter is rendered inoperable. It only works in XLR+Camera and Off.
So, the only way you can record in 32 bit and have channel control is with the 4ch Audio Recording menu is set to OFF.

[6.8 x 4.4 x 3"] I bought this to shoot interviews with my Sony ECM77B lav mics - and maybe a shotgun for nats although I have yet to get one. The audio is SUPER clean and with 32bit floating latitude - amazing. It's weird not to have to monitor audio in a headset - I feel naked. But even with my GH7 set to live - there's still a lag, so monitoring is not only disconcerting (like not having mix minus), as long as I see the meters move, I know my audio is in-range - so it's probably just unnecessary thus allowing to reduce a source of tangling and bother with my headphones. For reasons too involved to write about here, with all that said, I think it's more important than ever to 1) noise print the room and 2) really get mic placement right. It's always been important, but some of your old tricks won't work as well in a 32bit world because you won't be able to push lower stray noise under the apparent floor. I wish the connection to the hot shoe didn't include a small wiggle. Generally though, a super simple, light, clean way to shoot great audio on my GH7.
