Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this work on a Sony NEX 3N? Also, how does it compare to the SEL35F18?

A: Just to correct: better check what camera you have. The Nex 3 3c etc. are APS C cameras, not four thirds; there was a 5n which is a 16megapixel aps c camera. The lens will fit all of these cameras, but the APS C camera sensors are only half the size of the image the lens is designed to produce so a lot of the image is wasted. The Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 is a wonderful little lens, designed for the APS- Emounts. I have it and love it. But remember as you figure the field of view, that an APS C camera gets coverage out of a lens comparable to a full frame camera with a focal length of 1.5 more. i.e. a 24 mm aps c lens has the same field of view as a 36 mm full frame.

Q: 2. Is the 28mm f2 weather sealed?

A: Yes the Sony 28 mm F2 lens is dust and moisture sealed.

Q: 3. Would this lens be good for astro or landscape photography?

A: Yes, this lens would certainly be good for shooting landscape and astro photography.

Q: 4. Hi, Does these Lens zoom?Thanks.

A: Nope, it's a prime lense. However, mounted on the Sony A7S II you can zoom electronically or use the Clear Image Zoom feature if shooting movies.

Q: 5. How does this lens compare to the Sony FE 35 f2.8?

A: Hi--it's difficult to compare two lenses with different focal lengths, but these two are somewhat similar in optical quality, with the 28mm lens being somewhat better optically, as well as having a wider maximum aperture of f/2 vs f/2.8 for the 35mm lens.

Q: 6. Does this focus to infinity?

A: yes it sure does! It's a very sharp lens and does focus fast and accurately from about 11.5 inches to infinity. This lens outperforms a lot of others - one of the sharpest sony makes and it's also one of the lowest priced. Can't recommend it enough. I pair it with the ultra wide 21mm adapter and get twice the use out of it. And I'm incredibly picky and a pixel nerd because I'm a retoucher and photographer by trade - so I don't say these things lightly. :)

Q: 7. Thinking of putting this lens on my A7ii for use on a gimbal. Question 1: with the lens wide open, is the auto focus smooth and accurate enough to get good results following a moving person? Question 2: Will a variable ND filter fit on the lens along with the lens hood? Thanks very much.

A: Hi James, yes. The autofocus is smooth and accurate with the lens/aperture is wide open. -Anthony

Q: 8. This is a good lens for the sony at 6500 would use it in video, have active all the functions of autofocus and stabilizer ???

A: Pienso que si debe funcionar el autofocus, yo le utilizo con la a7SII y va muy bien

Q: 9. How good is this lens for video on Sony A6000, given that it does not have optical image stabilisation?

A: The build quality and picture/video quality is amazing. Because the a6000 is a crop sensor, this 28mm acts as a 42mm equivalent. On a tripod or in steady hands the lens is fine. If you're running around (with any lens) with no stabilization, you will produce a shaky image. Another thing to consider is the digital accelerated focus ring. If you will be using this on a rig with a follow focus system, keep shopping. This focus system makes it nearly impossible to do rack focusing or replicate a previous shot. To recap: on a tripod or in steady hands shooting mostly still subjects, this lens produces a wonderful image but, for other video purposes I would not recommend this lens.

Q: 10. How is the corner sharpness on this lens? And the ultrawide 21mm converter? I've seen mixed reviews.

A: I have been surprised by the quality on this lens - I may have a good copy, but corners have been fine for me. Distortion has been easy to fix (no profile in Adobe raw that I have seen). Build quality and overall rendering are a touch behind the zeiss branded 35 and 55. I have not tried to converter.

[28mm] Works very well for getting into tight spaces. The lens is fairly sharp - not the sharpest, but offers good value in terms of probe lenses.

F40 requires a ton of light. You'll also want a motorized rig of sorts for any movement as the macro lens is very sensitive to small bumps.

All in all - good value compared to the Laowa. Only down side is it an APS-C lens, so you'll get some crop when on a full frame lens.

[f/13] I bought this to have as a nice walk around lens for my a6500. It performs very well in that regard and is not too big. The sharpness is also very good, no complaints. I like that you can make it wider with the optional Sony attachments (expensive though), but I won't do that unless I also have a FF body someday.

[2:1] This lens is slightly bulkier than I hoped but extremely light and has a fast autofocus. No vignetting that I can see.

[f/13] Using this lens on a small handheld rig ISee Shape and an a7Rii. Easily manageable size and weight. The lens works perfectly with the camera. (As it should) Its just a test of time now. I also think these reviews should be done after 6-12 months.

[f/13] When I bought my A7RII, I was deciding what lenses I wanted to begin with. Since I formerly had an APS-C type Nikon dSLR, I had to part with my former fleet of lenses. I began with the Zeiss FE 55mm F1.8 lens. It's truly astounding, but it comes at a high cost. So I thought perhaps the next lens should be a little less strain on the wallet. The Sony FE 28mm F2 lens. This little lens is fairly lightweight, and also has exceptional build quality. Not being a Zeiss, I wasn't sure what I should expect from Sony. But they once again impressed me with their engineering. This is a solid lens, good build quality, and does not feel cheap at all. I have used it on several occasions now, and it has consistently provided stunning results when paired with the formidable capabilities of the a7.

[f/13] Really good quality build and really sharp, the best lens you can find in this price range.

[Manual Focus] I love the detail on this lens and taking some long exposure with an 8x ND filter the pictures came out great. My zeiss 35mm 1.4 is great but its huge. It's not great walking around with it. I found the color sharp and loads of detail using a full size sensor. Also for food shots, you can get a lot of the scene into the image and then just crop if needed. I think the 28mm is a fun focal length for everyday shooting. I will carry my zeiss 55 for anything more up close. Overall I couldnt be happier.

[Sony E] Fast aperture, fast autofocus and sharp images for 200 grams or so. It looks bigger on the pictures, but performs really well. I use it for video on my Sony A7S II and I call this the Low Light Combo Monster :) F2 is really good for shooting at night and I haven't had issues with autofocus speed even with the A7S II's CDAF. I was used to Nikon DX format so it was a little wider than I expected but in a good way (so much so that I'm planning to use it for vlogging). Anyway, awesome lens for video from my experience.

[f/13] Best bang for the buck full frame e-mount lens available right now. Retains sharpness throughout the center and edges and AF works well on it. Can be converted to a ultra wide or fish eye lens with the Sony converter attachments.

[f/13] I think everyone should have a Fixed Lens with a Wide Focal Range in their and this is a great starter lens for a reason price. I am not a pro by any means, but I feel like one when I see the results of the images when I use this lens.
