The Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 100mm T2 Lens PL/EF Silver Flarefrom Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 100mm T2 Lens PL/EF Silver Flareis a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 2x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35+ sensors such as the ALEXA 35 and RED V-RAPTOR. It features a focal length of 100mm, interchangeable PL and EF lens mounts, an aperture range of T2 to T22 for a deep depth of field, 10 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh, and a 2x anamorphic squeeze to capture a vintage, cinema-style anamorphic look. With a 2x squeeze ratio, this anamorphic lens produces a 2.66:1 on a 4:3 sensor and a 2.4:1 on a 6:5 sensor after de-squeezing. It provides room for cropping to a golden 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The 2x squeeze ratio yields an ultra-widescreen cinematic look desired by the film industry. The squeeze ratio remains constant at any focusing distance to avoid anamorphic mump effects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Any advantages from the Nikon Z to Nikon F versions? Is adapting the F version to Z cameras a better choice?

A: It is better to use the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Nikon Z than using the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Nikon F with an adapter on a Nikon Z camera. Lenses with a Nikon Z mount allow the rear element to get closer to the sensor. This will produce sharper images, than using a lens that requires an adapter.

[Yes] Blazar nailed this and no its not a perfect lens... but for under a grand ITS INSANE that a TINY and LIght-weight anamorphic getting you that old panavision c-d series aesthetic but you can actually own these. Are they 2x no obviously not - My Gemini is 30x18mm (rounded) and on 4 perf S35 ie larger S35 chips like my Red Gemini this Lens is a DREAM... Its definitely soft wide open as most vintage anamorphics are and has some CA and flaws but they are very organic... and although the squeeze isnt 2x the Bokeh are CLEARLY oval and the blue streaks (got the blue streak PL ) are great... I always think you need to see how SMALL they are to believe it I dont need a support on My Gemini or when using the FF on my Eos r5. I cant wait for rest have 100 and Hoping the 85 comes soon and then the 33mm FF But this one is a must if you can only buy one.

[25.9 mm] I’ve had many of the affordable anamorphics that are out. They were all disappointing with their pinstripe flares. Pincushion distortion, and otherwise forgettable image.

These are not that! These have the character that one looks for in more expensive lenses like the Atlas Mercury’s. And in my experience with both, the Mercury’s and now owning the Remus’ I cannot imagine spending 10x the amount for the Atlas Mercury lenses when these exist.

These were one of the best and most surprising purchases I’ve ever made.

It’s clear that China is not messing around and are coming for blood, because these are killer!

[100mm] Bought these to use with various cameras to get an anamorphic feel. I really like the look. They aren’t super sharp but fairly well built for the price, have a nice character and actually give a cinematic look. Maybe not 2 x character but for the price I love them.

[Super35/APS-C] I've only done tests on location with these before the shoot I've been planning next week... These lenses have a dreamy, droopy, anamorphic look wide open, but I wouldn't suggest using them wide open unless you need a dreamy look. Super soft wide open. At T2.8 it gets better but T4 is where it actually gets sharp. For more context, I'm shooting on a C70, and we know that camera is on the softer side...

Aperture/Focus rings are smooth and a pleasure to use.

Focus breathing is not great, but depending on the shot your going after, it could be ok. They do some funky things when panning or handheld. I plan to use these lenses mostly locked off, on a slider, dolly, etc for nice smooth controlled shots with an artistic look.

Definitely recommend.

[105 mm] First off, there's a review with 1 start saying ( Not for professional use ) - I think that's an irresponsible opinion, without any room for subjectiveness. Since the definition of a professional really is nothing more than someone who is being paid for their work, you can't just say not for professional use, when there are many types of looks in demand by clients looking for exactly what these produce. I'd say these are definitely lenses for professionals in the right situation.

Quick mentiontions (tough body and mounts, strong gears, very controlled flaring, and ultra light).

I am not saying these are the best tools for every job, and I agree that there are some issues regarding the lenses distortion - which are easily noticeable in review videos (evidently the other person didn't study before buying), which for me, has all be quickly addressable in an editor with limited adjustments if I decided to correct it.

However, I have already had a few clients, including my own personal work, where the look and feel these lenses with the distortion they create is preferred, it added a feel to the image, it was the deciding factor to use these for the productions actually (feature films), it added a driving mood that complimented the narrative - so when I say they are a tool, I am simply saying - understand what your tools have to offer, and you will know if they are the right ones for the jobs, and in those cases, these lenses are phenomenal. They are a little too sharp for my typical feel, but I slapped a custom made filter in my matte box, and they have become the perfect look for my film making aesthetic.

Study these lenses on YouTube, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and make sure those strengths align with your objective - if they do, BUY THESE - I love mine.

[105 mm] I bought a set of Viltrox anamorphic lenses, which are amazing, but I wanted something smaller and lighter for my FX6/Ronin 4D. These Blazar lenses are a lot of fun. I only have the 65 so far, which I find wide enough for most situations without having the issues in the corners that the 45 had. Waiting to try out their new ones, I just need something slightly wider and another slightly tighter. Waiting to hear what they say about the new additions.

[Imperial] True 2x anamorphic with Panavision C style look.
T2 a little soft, but truly unique character. High build quality.

Wish there was a way to add lens data via the mount. /i data.

[Imperial] I am truly amazed by the images these lenses can produce for the price and size! If you are looking for lenses that don't look sterile and have some character to them without having to sell all your possessions to afford them, then these are absolutely the lenses for you!
