The Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 28mm T2 Lens PL/EF Blue Flarefrom Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 28mm T2 Lens PL/EF Blue Flareis a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 2x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35+ sensors such as the ALEXA 35 and RED V-RAPTOR. It features a focal length of 100mm, interchangeable PL and EF lens mounts, an aperture range of T2 to T22 for a deep depth of field, 10 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh, and a 2x anamorphic squeeze to capture a vintage, cinema-style anamorphic look. Using an optional 1.4x full-frame expander adapter, Proteus lenses can also cover a full-frame sensor.

The 28mm prime lens has a minimum focus distance of 18.9" and offers anamorphic qualities such as high contrast, blue lens flares, and a 85.6° horizontal field of view. Other features include measurement markings in feet, 0.8 MOD cine gears on the focus and aperture rings, a 114mm front diameter, and a 105mm filter thread. This lens includes PL and EF mounts, a hard case, a support foot, and a tool kit.

With a 2x squeeze ratio, this anamorphic lens produces a 2.66:1 on a 4:3 sensor and a 2.4:1 on a 6:5 sensor after de-squeezing. It provides room for cropping to a golden 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The 2x squeeze ratio yields an ultra-widescreen cinematic look desired by the film industry. The squeeze ratio remains constant at any focusing distance to avoid anamorphic mump effects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a Canon EF version coming? S35?

A: At this time there appears to be no plans to make a EF mount version of the Vazen 40mm T2 1.8x Anamorphic Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras.

Q: 2. Could this be used with red cine cameras with pl mount?

A: It cannot be used with a camera that has a PL Mount. This is an MFT mount lens.

Q: 3. Will these lenses work with cameras with rear mounted ND like the Red END PL mount or the internal NDs on Alexa?

A: The DZOFilm PAVO 2x Anamorphic 32/55 T2.1 & 100mm T2.4 3-Lens Set (Blue Coating, PL/EF Mount, Feet) PL flange distance from the PL mount locking ring to the PL mount flange face is around 19.8mm±0.8 mm. Based on the technical details you provided, the Pavo Anamorphic lenses are compatible with the Red Komodo using the electronic ND PL adapter. At this time we were not able to test them with the Arri Alexa RED END adapter.

Q: 4. Please provide us with the flange depth on the lens side of the adapter and the depth of the back portion of the adapter? Thanks

A: It is our understanding that the flange depth on the lens side of the Venus Optics Laowa 1.33x Rear Anamorphic Adapter (PL-to-PL) is 52mm like any PL mount. On the camera side, the lens cannot protrude more than 14mm from the mount. Please print out the PDF measurement chart to find if your camera is compatible. PDF CHART: https://bhpho.to/3y77lEA

Q: 5. Will it work on an Amira? Are the ND's in the way?

A: the rear anamorphic adapter includes a measurement tool to determine compatibility, they do not provided a list of compatible cameras or lenses and state that compatibility is determined on a case by case measurement basis.

Q: 6. If used with a full frame lens and sensor will it cover?

A: this product is designed for VERY SPECIFIC LENSES. Here is the list of compatible lenses from the manufacturer Angenieux 28–340mm Optimo Zoom T3.2 Angenieux 24–290mm Optimo Zoom T2.8 Angenieux Optimo Style 16–40mm T2.8 Zoom Angenieux Optimo Style 30–76mm T2.8 Zoom Carl Zeiss Supreme Prime 25 mm T1.5 Carl Zeiss Supreme Prime 29 mm T1.5 Carl Zeiss Supreme Prime 35 mm T1.5 Carl Zeiss Supreme Prime 50 mm T1.5 Carl Zeiss Supreme Prime 85 mm T1.5 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 15mm T2.9 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 18 mm T2.9 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 25 mm T2.1 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 28 mm T2.1 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 35 mm T2.1 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 50 mm T2.1 Carl Zeiss Compact Prime 85 mm T2.1 ARRI 18–80mm Alura Studio Zoom T2.6 ARRI 45–250MM T2.6

Q: 7. Would this work on c300 mark iii

A: At this time there are no RF to EF lens adapters that would allow the Vazen 40mm T2 1.8x Anamorphic Lens (RF Mount) lens to mount to a C300 camera model.

Q: 8. I have a Zcam E2 and a RED Komodo. Is it possible to use the lens with an adapter for both cameras? Is there an MFT to RF adapte

A: Unfortunately, the Vazen 40mm T2 1.8x Anamorphic Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras would not work for RF lens mount cameras like the RED Komodo. However, it would adapt to Zcam cameras that have the MFT lens mount. The Vazen 40mm T2 1.8x Anamorphic Lens (RF Mount) model would be the best choice for the RED Komodo. At this time MFT to RF adapters are not currently being manufactured.

Q: 9. Can this lens in either mount version be mounted on a Sony A7S III?

A: We’re afraid not. They do not make an E-Mount version of this lens.

Q: 10. Is the 40 mm the actual focal length (so roughly 80 mm equivalent to full 35 mm frame), or is it the equivalent focal length? In other words, is it wide-screen or is telephoto?

A: Lenses are always listed by their physical focal length, then the crop factor for the camera it is being used with must be factored. This will be closer to 80mm.

[T2] First off. These have to be one of the best budget anamorphics you can get your hands on as of early 2024.

My only small grip is the inconsistent squeeze factor on the 50mm. If you know that it's easy to compensate in post but I would feel a little weary handing off footage from the 50mm lens.

As for the 35mm, I really love how large the FOV is. On the flip side you have to get a subject very close to really feel the anamorphic stuff but outside of that is a very useful focal length

As an owner op these are WELL worth your money

[Super35/APS-C] very good balancing between clinical precision and anamorphic identify. I bought 2. Wish i bought the set at one time.

[Super35/APS-C] These lenses have a constant 1.5x squeeze factor, which gives consistent results across the entire focus range and makes for reliable de-squeezing in post. Other affordable Anamorphic lens brands do not have a constant squeeze factor. This lens is clean with minimal chromatic aberration only at the very lowest T-stop. It is incredibly lightweight which is useful in run and gun productions. I cant speak for the PL mount, as those may have a bit more heft to them. Flaring is very gentle on the silver version and slightly more aggressive on the blue and amber versions. You cant go wrong with this lens. See attached example.

[Imperial] This lens gives the image quality I’ve been looking for in a package that has never been so easy to work with. The gears and focus thread allow me to pull focus while on gimbal and use light weight 77mm filters and diopters! I use this lens wide open all the time and love it! Give it a try!

[Yes] I've already used this lens on three different projects and it is genuinely incredible how much character and filmic quality it adds to footage. I use this lens with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k and the combination of size and focal length make it an ideal No. 1 lens for narrative and music video work. I can fly it on the DJI RS2 easily. I also have the Vazen 40mm, which is another incredible lens, but in terms of ease of use, the 28mm tops it - thanks mostly to its reduced size and increased depth of field. It makes it much more ideal for fast moving shots where it's important to still keep most of the frame in focus. The flares on this lens are absolutely gorgeous as well. The only minor gripe is that the aperture ring does feel like it moves a bit too easily. I haven't had any problems with it slipping so far, but that's the only thing I've really noticed. Otherwise, WOW!

[T2] A lot of bokeh at 65mm, but one of the lightest ones in the Orion set (besides the 32mm). Lighter than 40mm

[105 mm] Beautiful image - more than impressed with how things turned out. Shot a 15-minute film with just this lens.

[10] First off, there's a review with 1 start saying ( Not for professional use ) - I think that's an irresponsible opinion, without any room for subjectiveness. Since the definition of a professional really is nothing more than someone who is being paid for their work, you can't just say not for professional use, when there are many types of looks in demand by clients looking for exactly what these produce. I'd say these are definitely lenses for professionals in the right situation.

Quick mentiontions (tough body and mounts, strong gears, very controlled flaring, and ultra light).

I am not saying these are the best tools for every job, and I agree that there are some issues regarding the lenses distortion - which are easily noticeable in review videos (evidently the other person didn't study before buying), which for me, has all be quickly addressable in an editor with limited adjustments if I decided to correct it.

However, I have already had a few clients, including my own personal work, where the look and feel these lenses with the distortion they create is preferred, it added a feel to the image, it was the deciding factor to use these for the productions actually (feature films), it added a driving mood that complimented the narrative - so when I say they are a tool, I am simply saying - understand what your tools have to offer, and you will know if they are the right ones for the jobs, and in those cases, these lenses are phenomenal. They are a little too sharp for my typical feel, but I slapped a custom made filter in my matte box, and they have become the perfect look for my film making aesthetic.

Study these lenses on YouTube, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and make sure those strengths align with your objective - if they do, BUY THESE - I love mine.

[Imperial] Great value for the price. The aesthetics of the images achieved are beautiful. It would be nice to have a detailed manufacturer's video of the mount change from PL to EF.
