Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Input for a remote control like the H4N? Looks to be missing the port. If not, I'm saddened.

A: The remote connector for the Zoom H4essential 4-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder is for the Zoom BTA-1 adapter so that you can control the recorder from an iOS device via Bluetooth.

Q: 2. Can I disable recording of the Stereo Mix and record ONLY the iso tracks? (The 4 track version will NOT do this.)

A: According to the user manual for the Zoom H6essential 6-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder, files that are stereo mixes of all tracks will only be created when the sample rate is set to 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.

Q: 3. Is the built-in mic recording in 32-bit Float? (Because it does NOT on the 4 track version.)

A: Yes, the Zoom H6essential 6-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder records in 32-bit from all inputs.

Q: 4. Can you recommend windshields that fit this recorder?

A: For the Zoom H1essential 2-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder, I would recommend the Rycote Zoom H1n Mini Windjammer.

Q: 5. Does it have 3.5mm microphone input?

A: No, the Zoom H6essential 6-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder (BH #ZOH6E) only has 3.5mm outputs. You could use a 3.5mm to XLR adapter like a RODE VXLR 3.5mm TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter (B&H # ROVXLR) to attach a 3.5mm mic.

When connecting the Zoom H6essential 6-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder to a computer and setting the recorder for use and an audio interface, you have the option of setting the output to "Multi track" or "Stereo Mix." When set to "Multi track," you will have the individual tracks instead of the Mix track going to the computer.

Q: 8. Do I need to use a computer to take advantage of the 32-bit float option, to normalize the audio?

A: Normalization is possible on the Zoom H1essential 2-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder without the use of a computer.

[2] I recently produced a livestream for a consecration of a bishop. Where the signal off the mixing board, which I did not control, was way hotter than it was in tech rehearsal. The output channel was clipping before it even got to my ATEM board and, as a result, the audio was destroyed on all the music. Luckily, I could crowd source the audio from cell phone recordings and was able to save most of the service. This product was released three weeks after the consecration so it wasn't an option.

Now, with the H6Essential, my new rig is a standard four channel safety system. Channel one and two are the on board XY, channel three is a super cardioid mic aimed at the stage and channel four is the feed from the board. I monitor the feed and switch channels on and off as needed.

The 32 bit recording capability is epic! I had my daughter scream at full volume into the mics and she did not overdrive it once. No clipping. So, we decided to name it Edgar (all my equipment has a name) after the poem the Raven. I will have clipped audio nevermore. Thanks Zoom and B&H! Epic piece of kit.

[BWF, iXML, WAV] This is a great recorder. Perfect for interviews or small run and gun style shooting. I'm also using it as a audio interface for live streaming.

[Speed Change] This is an awesome little recorder. So many options! My primary uses so far have been with two phantom powered mics. I ran it all with a juice box type battery and had no trouble recording through the night. Can't wait to get this out in the field!

[Yes, 1 W Mono] Gear I need fits in, including the H5. Soft foam on top so you can put more stuff in than what the pocket can hold.

[-37 dB (X/Y)] The H5 has so many input options, and such detailed control over each input. The buttons and knobs are super high quality, and the menu is relatively easy to navigate. Everything is pretty straightforward.

One thing to be aware of is that this thing absolutely EATS through AA batteries. Expect to be changing them out every few hours.

[Yes, 1 W Mono] I had the older H1n. The main feature or the H1essential is the 32-bit float. The screen is smaller than the H1n, but is still sharp. Personally I would have like to have the same size screen. The USB connections is now USB-C and the 1/4-20 has a metal insert. The recorder will accept SDXC cards up to 1 TB. There is a mic/line in jack. You can record with the included mics, with a lavalier or connect to a separate device. i.e. connecting to the DJ's board to record audio. If you need XLR input jacks, you will need to upgrade the the H4esential.

[Stereo Only] A lot more intuitive to adjust than the H4N's (and slightly better pre-amps I think), and love that they have an 3.5mm TRS input on the top mic.

[1] This is a fantastic-sounding unit. I had the H5 first generation, and the same mics I have been using on the H5 sound way better on this unit. Being able to capture the full dynamic range of any mic that is plugged into it is an amazing feature. My type of shooting is all run and gun, point and shoot, set and forget, and that is why I immediately bought this the second it became available. It fits my type of shooting, and since using it, I have not blown out my audio, something that happens often.
