Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens have electrical contacts to communicate the settings to the camera?

A: Unfortunately, the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 28mm f/1.2 FF Lens (Nikon Z) does not have any electrical contacts.

Q: 2. Is it 25mm on Canon mirrorless full frame R6? Thanks

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Argus 25mm f/0.95 CF APO Lens (Canon RF) is a lens designed for APS-C sized sensors. On the Canon EOS R6 Mirrorless Camera this will still perform like a 25mm, but with heavy vignetting. It may make most sense to use it in the 1.6x crop on that camera.

Q: 3. the shiny bit at the end of the lens, which goes into the camera - can this be removed (I see there are some screws)?

A: The silver bit at the end of the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 45mm f/0.95 FF Lens for Sony E is how you mount the lens to the camera.

Q: 4. Does this have hard focus stops?

A: The focus is smooth but it does have Selectable Clicked / De-Clicked Aperture. Photographers might prefer the clicked aperture ring while de-clicked would be better for video.

Q: 5. Is it weather sealed?

A: Unfortunately Venus Optics Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO Lens for FUJIFILM X is not weather sealed.

Q: 6. Does it works with Panasonic Lumix Gh5-2 and G9 Cameras?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Zero-D S35 7.5mm T/2.9 Cine Lens (FUJI X, Feet/Meters) is not compatible with MFT-mount cameras.

Q: 7. Why is it called 33 when it's really 50?

A: The focal length of the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO Lens for Nikon Z is based on the APS-C format, which is the equivalent angle of view of a 49.5mm Lens on a full frame camera.

Q: 8. Does the focus peaking work on Canon cameras?

A: Yes, Venus Optics Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95 FF Lens for Canon R will support focus peaking on all Canon RF cameras.

Q: 9. How sharp is this lens full opened?

A: When you have it wide open (T1-1.4) it will feel more like a vintage lens. It will be ok in terms of sharpness and have low contrast. Around T2 you will notice that it will get more contrast and get sharper. The lens performs its best in regards to sharpness and contrast between T4 and T5.6.

Q: 10. f0.95 APS-C is roughly f1.5 at Full-Frame? (angle of view changes obviously).

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO Lens for Canon RF is designed for the APS-C sensor. It would not cover a full-frame sensor. When used on a Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital camera, you would have to use the camera's [Cropping/aspect ratio] setting under the Camera Setting menu in the camera. The aperture indicated is the correct aperture for the APS-C sensor size, though the perceived depth-of-field would be the equivalent of a f/1.5 lens. While the focal length is correct, if you are trying to find the full-frame equivalent focal length, it would be equivalent to a 52.8mm lens covering a full-frame 36x24mm size sensor.

[18mm] I love this lens! I love the long slow focus - it makes it so much easier to get the exact focus I want. Sure, it's not fast, but that's not why I got a manual focus lens. So far, the images I'm getting from this lens are great and I look forward to getting more lenses from Venus Optics!

[T1] The r5 makes manual focus so incredibly easy, I can confidently capture bride groom portraits with ease and know they're in focus. The bokeh has a vintage reminiscence to it which I absolutely love

[77 mm] If you are not looking for perfection at this price, but a special way of rendering the world, you have a winner with this lens.
I take any chance to slow down and to become more creative.

[T1] This is my first Laowa lens, but it won't be my last. I get that this is a photo lens. And that real cinema lenses have gears for motors etc, but the focus throw on this lens is so long that it makes focusing handheld (and with its shallow depth of field) a breeze.

You can break down your rig as light as possible, as I've done in the photo I've attached and use focus peaking or the manual scales on the lens to focus.

It's built incredibly well. It's all metal, but lightweight and portable, so you're inspired to take it anywhere you just want to document life as it happens around you. The focal length is a little tight on crop sensor, but I find it's the sweet spot to give just enough compression between your subject and background. There's just something about 33/35 mm lens on s35 sensors that look really good.

On the Red Komodo- X, this is about 43mm in 6k 17:9 mode. It;s also APO, which helps reduce chromatic aberration (the purple-ish/greenish fringing around edges in bright conditions). Yes there's still some, but nowhere near as much as you'd expect for an aperture around f/0.95 aperture.

The images look really good, too. For some reason, I feel like there's some barrel distortion... which I love, or maybe just some kind of 3d pop for images framed in the center. I can't explain it, but there's a lovely character to this lens.

I have an R6 Mark II, which is full frame, and this won't work without heavy vignetting on the corners since the image circle doesn't cover full frame cameras. Again, this lens is made only for crop factor (The CF on the side of the lens) cameras (aps-c and super 35,) On full frame or anything else, you'll need to use a digital tele converter or crop-in in post (which ultimately reduces resolution.)

Anyway, hope this helps someone!

[77 mm] SO GOOD

[18mm] I was a bit worried from reading other reviews about vignetting on a full frame e-mount. However I'm very impressed with the build quality of this lense. On my FX6 I'm not seeing any horrible vignetting wide open at 2.8. Sharp as well. And while I have not had much time to test it doesn't appear to exhibit too much Chromatic aberration. Especially when looking at YouTube reviews and comparing to the other larger focal lengths in this SLR Magic MicroPrime series which have pretty noticeable CA.
Compared side by side with a 20mm Samyang Cine Prime. I'd prefer the quality and optics out of the SLR Magic. It's a winner.

[77 mm] for shooting northern lights this is great. this is the widest lens for fullframe sensor at F0.95 . I shoot northern lights realtime video with this baby, handheld thanks to IBIS, And even photo of northern lights , handheld - no tripod , at 1/5 sec shutter thanks to IBIS ... for portrait work the 45mm f/0.95 is probably better but for wider sky view this is a great lens .

[77 mm] Incredible lens, at T2.8 it has vignetting but nothing that can be fixed. Very sharp and excellent construction

[FUJIFILM X] Just have to say this is an incredible lens. First one I received did not have the proper line on it, second one was absolutely perfect and the focus distance markings were exact. Years ago it would have been impossible to buy a lens like this for less than 30k, or 10k. Look up some videos on it to confirm how incredible it is. Large format look on an S35 sensor. Great feeling quality. I have used 50k Cooke lenses, this is a great quality lens from Mitakon.
