Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work on a Sony a7siii? Or will I need some sort of adapter

A: The Canon RF mount version of the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm T2.9 2x Macro APO FF Cine Lens will only mount on a canon system, you have to go with the Sony E mount version made for full frame cameras.

Q: 2. Laowa makes a custom filter holder for this lens. Can I purchase it at B &H?

A: Sorry , we don't sell it

Q: 3. What’s the size of the image circle?

A: The Venus Optics 100mm T2.9 2x Macro APO FF Cine Lens (Canon EF) is designed to cover full frame 36x24mm sensors

Q: 4. the shiny bit at the end of the lens, which goes into the camera - can this be removed (I see there are some screws)?

A: The silver bit at the end of the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 45mm f/0.95 FF Lens for Sony E is how you mount the lens to the camera.

Q: 5. Other than the Full Frame nature, are there any significant image quality or build quality differences between this and the older 2.8 version that comes in native Fuji mount?

A: This lens is currently the world's widest rectilinear lens. It being a Full Frame lens means it does not suffer the crop of the other lens, and consequently has a much wider field of view. It has a 135° angle of view. This is a significant optical achievement, and really separates it from the older lens.

Q: 6. Can one use intermediate f stops with this lens? Example 9.1?

A: Yes, you can use intermediate f/stops.

Q: 7. What is the front diameter for matte box attachment?

A: The front diameter of the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm T2.9 2x Macro APO FF Cine Lens is 80mm.

Q: 8. Is the Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95 FF hood removable?

A: Yes, the lens hood included with the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95 FF Lens for Sony E-Mount is removable.

Q: 9. Is the Nikon Z7 compatible with this manual focus lens? Besides no image stabilization, are other capabilities lost?

A: As the Venus Optics Laowa Argus FF 28mm T1 Cine Lens (Nikon Z) is a fully manual lens, aperture and focus would need to be controlled manually as well. You may also lose any focus confirmation features built into the camera itself.

Q: 10. Does the focus peaking work on Canon cameras?

A: Yes, Venus Optics Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95 FF Lens for Canon R will support focus peaking on all Canon RF cameras.

[Sony E] This is my first Laowa lens, but it won't be my last. I get that this is a photo lens. And that real cinema lenses have gears for motors etc, but the focus throw on this lens is so long that it makes focusing handheld (and with its shallow depth of field) a breeze.

You can break down your rig as light as possible, as I've done in the photo I've attached and use focus peaking or the manual scales on the lens to focus.

It's built incredibly well. It's all metal, but lightweight and portable, so you're inspired to take it anywhere you just want to document life as it happens around you. The focal length is a little tight on crop sensor, but I find it's the sweet spot to give just enough compression between your subject and background. There's just something about 33/35 mm lens on s35 sensors that look really good.

On the Red Komodo- X, this is about 43mm in 6k 17:9 mode. It;s also APO, which helps reduce chromatic aberration (the purple-ish/greenish fringing around edges in bright conditions). Yes there's still some, but nowhere near as much as you'd expect for an aperture around f/0.95 aperture.

The images look really good, too. For some reason, I feel like there's some barrel distortion... which I love, or maybe just some kind of 3d pop for images framed in the center. I can't explain it, but there's a lovely character to this lens.

I have an R6 Mark II, which is full frame, and this won't work without heavy vignetting on the corners since the image circle doesn't cover full frame cameras. Again, this lens is made only for crop factor (The CF on the side of the lens) cameras (aps-c and super 35,) On full frame or anything else, you'll need to use a digital tele converter or crop-in in post (which ultimately reduces resolution.)

Anyway, hope this helps someone!

[Full Frame] This lens has stayed on my z50 since I got it about a month ago and think it will continue to stay there. I love the razor thin focus, the bokeh, the lens flare. I like the price and that it’s equivalent to a 50mm on a full frame camera. Since it’s manual, It’s not for everyone and every situation, but it’s really nice for more mindful photography.

[1:0.11] Not for everyone, as they say, but surprisingly good for the price for what it is. If you want it for super thin depth of field and creamy smooth bokeh you may be happy. Stopped down, sharpness is good, especially in the center. Works very well for urban scenes at night as well and keeps the ISO down. At the current price of $650 I'm very pleased, but at list of $999 maybe less so. If you want an all around 35mm there are better choices, mostly slower by a stop or more, but then with AF or at greater expense. Beautifully built as well.

[Sony E] If you are not looking for perfection at this price, but a special way of rendering the world, you have a winner with this lens.
I take any chance to slow down and to become more creative.

[1:0.11] for shooting northern lights this is great. this is the widest lens for fullframe sensor at F0.95 . I shoot northern lights realtime video with this baby, handheld thanks to IBIS, And even photo of northern lights , handheld - no tripod , at 1/5 sec shutter thanks to IBIS ... for portrait work the 45mm f/0.95 is probably better but for wider sky view this is a great lens .

[15] The r5 makes manual focus so incredibly easy, I can confidently capture bride groom portraits with ease and know they're in focus. The bokeh has a vintage reminiscence to it which I absolutely love
