Providing a classic normal-length field of view along with an impressive optical design, the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera with 50mm f/2 Lens Kitis a bright prime lens designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras. The f/2 maximum aperture balances speed with overall weight and size, resulting in a portable form factor that can excel in available light conditions. Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness, and the lens also features an apochromatic optical design, which employs anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy. Multi-layer coatings also help to limit flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Complementing the optics is a Dual Syncro Drive stepping motor, which delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, an AquaDura coating has been applied to the exposed elements and seals have been incorporated in the lens design to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.

Normal-length 50mm f/2 lens is designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focusing techniques.

Three aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Apochromatic design employs anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range for increased color accuracy and clarity.

Multi-layer coatings have been applied to individual elements to suppress surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.

Dual Syncro Drive stepping motor delivers quick, precise, and near-silent autofocus performance to suit both photo and video applications. This system also avails full-time manual focus override.

Water-repellent AquaDura coating has been applied to the front and rear optical surfaces to protect against moisture and other elements.

Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in inclement shooting conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this camera be powered through the USB port while shooting stills or video?

A: The Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera (Silver) can be powered through the USB port while shooting stills or video.

Q: 2. Can I use current Zeiss lenses (Canon mount) on this camera?

A: You'll need an EF-to-L-mount adapter in order to use Canon EF-mount lenses on the SL2. Please be aware that certain adapters do not work with the original Leica SL Type-601, and this information is only currently relevant to the SL2.

Q: 3. Will there be a new HG SL4 SL to go with it or will the original be the only grip to work with the new SL2 system?

A: There is a new Multi Function Handgrip HGP-SLC6 for the SL2 B&H # LEHGSCL6, Leica # 16061.

Q: 4. I have an SL Typ 691. Looking for a new tripod. What is the correct screw head size for a tripod that will accept my SL?

A: The Leica SL Type 601 (and most other cameras, including the Leica SL2) uses the 1/4"-20 mounting thread. Any tripod would work, but in the interest of getting you a great tripod that might support some of the larger Leica L-mount lenses, some good recommendations are the Gitzo traveler or RRS Ascend. https://bhpho.to/3yc8YhK https://bhpho.to/3ymjHGq

Q: 5. Is there a way to add GPS functionality to the SL2?

A: You can use the Leica Fotos app on a smartphone and using the location data of the smartphone it can update the photo in the camera with the GPS info. This has been working with previous Leica cameras like the Q2. This should also work with the Leica SL2 as it is also compatible with the Leica Fotos app, even though that specific functionality I do not see listed in the app yet for the SL2. That might just be because the SL2 is new and not released yet, so the app should be updated soon. I also see that a new Leica Fotos 2.0 app is being released on November 21st, so it should have more functionality for the SL2.

Q: 6. Does moire goes away completely with a fixed lens? I understand theres no low pass filter and that may make it impossible to avoid it completely. Thank you very much

A: A prime lens does not really effect the moire that can can happen by cameras with out a low pass filter.

Q: 7. Can you make in-camera double exposures?

A: I'm sorry, no, the SL2 does not do in camera multiple exposures.

Q: 8. Hi....will Manfrotto PL200 quick plate fit well on SL2 body?

A: Yes, the Manfrotto 200PL quick release plate can fit well on the Leica SL2 body.

Q: 9. Are V60 speed rated cards sufficient for SL2...or V90 has to be used?

A: For photography related things V60 is totally fine. V90 would be best for sustained video recording in 4K.

Q: 10. Does it work with Sigma MC-21 adapters?

A: Hi--yes, this camera is compatible with the MC-21 lens adapter.

[Autofocus] I hesitated a bit because of the lower resolution (compared to the SL2). However, the BSI sensor is amazing and great for low light. High sensitivity and high shutter speed is exactly what I was looking for. From a purely aesthetic point of view, this camera is beautiful and extremely well designed. It's just a completely different level. Highly recommeded.

[3.135 lb] I have not had my camera that long but the Leica SL2S with the Vario-Elmarit 24-70mm lens is everything I expected it to be. The colors spectacular and the build quality is outstanding. Simply put, when I bought my first Leica X I knew I would never pick up another camera without the Leica badge. Now that this is my second Leica I have been reassured that Leica's are in a class all by themselves. I am very happy with my purchase.

[Autofocus] I switched from TL2 to SL2-S and have no regrets. Its simplicity, ease of use is excellent, and the image quality is fantastic (colours, skin tone, sharpness, etc.).

A lot of people knock the autofocus, but I'm 99% happy with it for stills, and manual focus is the way to go for video anyway.

I tried the Sigma 28-70, which is a super lens by default, but the Leica version is better. Not just because of the build quality, but also the image quality. Yes, the 24-90 is a hair better and noticeably heavier (I tried that too), I think the kit lens is somewhere between the Sigma 24-70 and the Leica 24-90.

I give it 5 stars, but if it was a little lighter I would give it 6. :) After a full day of shooting, you can feel the weight, but it's lightened if you buy a good neck strap.

[50mm] I own the original SL (601) for 5 years.this is what I was waiting for.I didn’t need the high resolution of sl2 as I don’t crop my photos and I didn’t need the high file size.also the low light picture taking was not good with the sl2.too much noise above iso 800.A lot of people think the higher pixel count better image quality and that is not true.I shoot only with Leica M lenses.love this camera SL2-S.great upgrade from the SL 601.

[47.2°] Rather than a myriad of buttons, dials, and gizmos -- Leica builds a UI (User Interface) designed for photographers, not computer geeks.
Stills settings are separate from Video settings and all are logically presented for instant access.
Most importantly for me, the old fashioned stills photographer, the image's RAW files (DNG like Adobe) have amazing depth in both shows and highlights yet are adaptable to the creator's wishes.

[67 mm (Front)] Comparing this camera to the SL2 is more apples and oranges than I would have thought. The SL2-S is great in low light, and has somewhat faster autofocus. While both cameras produce gorgeous images, there are differences in what comes directly out of the camera. They are not huge differences and can be easily corrected afterwards. The best review of this camera I have seen, and one that explores the differences between the SL2-S and the SL2 is the review from Steve Huff (one of the reviews on this site). I think that he provides an accurate assessment.

I am still getting used to both cameras but I really enjoy the feel of the SL series camera body and the ease of use of the controls. While I bought the SL2 before the SL2-S came out, I can see that there are enough differences between the two that I am quite happy to have both. I think the SL2 excels in landscape, architecture, and in anything where I need to crop and can thus benefit from the larger file size.

The SL2-S would be my choice for general purpose travel, evening and night photography (particularly street scenes), and most action-related stuff such as my dogs. Admittedly, neither camera has the incredible autofocus capability of recent higher end Sony or Canon cameras but both the SL2 and SL2-S are capable with the edge going to the SL2-S.

[L-Mount] When I first ordered this camera was just an expensive Panasonic S5 which I own. It NOT. It takes photography to the next level. The touch interface on camera best I have seen on a camera. The ergonomics of this camera is perfect for my hand. The ISO and Dynamic range are simply incredible. The release of firmware 2.0 has brought more fantastic features to this master peace.

[67 mm (Front)] I love how this camera is made . Super solid and I don't have to worry about it getting water and dust in it . Not the best autofocus but it's manageable as long as you know your workarounds .

The 4K video is amazing !! Plus the HD 180 FPS is a nice feature to have . Oh and did I mention about being able to hook this up with a V-Mount battery via usb -C to Dtap cable ? That and the Atomos ninja v make it a nice compact run and gun filmmaking kit .

The Leica look is an obsession that a lot of Leica owners would admit to as a reason for purchasing this tool . Despite some of it's minor short comings , it's an amazing step forward in my career being able to provide images from this camera .

Thank you B&H for shipping this out to me in a timely manner ! You guys are the best !

[Autofocus] Was looking for a hybrid that has the Leica look and this camera is worth it. Auto focus is just whatever for video but I personally manual focus anyway. Leica LUTs for Log look sublime. Sensor works well in tough lighting conditions.
