Presenting a favored focal length for portraiture, the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera with 90mm f/2 Lens Kitfrom Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera with 90mm f/2 Lens Kitis an optically refined short telephoto prime designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras. Complementing the comfortable focal length is a bright f/2 maximum aperture that suits working in low-light conditions and also affords great control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. The lens' apochromatic optical design uses anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy, and one aspherical element is also featured to reduce spherical aberrations for improved sharpness. Multi-layer coatings have also been applied to limit flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Complementing the optical assets is a Dual Syncro Drive stepping motor, which delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance, and a floating elements system maintains consistent imaging quality throughout the focusing range. Additionally, an AquaDura coating has been applied to the exposed elements and seals have been incorporated in the lens design to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.

Portrait-length 90mm f/2 lens is designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 135mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focusing techniques.

One aspherical element is used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Apochromatic design employs anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range for increased color accuracy and clarity.

Multi-layer coatings have been applied to individual elements to suppress surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.

Dual Syncro Drive stepping motor delivers quick, precise, and near-silent autofocus performance to suit both photo and video applications. This system also avails full-time manual focus override.

Floating elements system and an internal focusing design maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 2' to infinity.

Water-repellent AquaDura coating has been applied to the front and rear optical surfaces to protect against moisture and other elements.

Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in inclement shooting conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi....will Manfrotto PL200 quick plate fit well on SL2 body?

A: Yes, the Manfrotto 200PL quick release plate can fit well on the Leica SL2 body.

Q: 2. Are V60 speed rated cards sufficient for SL2...or V90 has to be used?

A: For photography related things V60 is totally fine. V90 would be best for sustained video recording in 4K.

Q: 3. Can you use the Canon EF series L lenses with the Leica SL2?

A: The Novoflex Canon EF Lens to Leica L-Mount Camera Electronic Adapter would be helpful to use Canon L series lenses on the Leica SL2. https://bhpho.to/2UURELk

Q: 4. Do I have to turn off the IBIS when using it on a tripod?

A: While the instruction manual does not have a specific recommendation concerning the above, I personally recommend if you will be using a tripod, disable the in-camera image stabilization inside the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Digital Camera's menu to prevent issues with the stabilization system looking for non-existent camera movement and introducing movement/artifacts in the image.

Q: 5. I have a Leica CL. I know I can use these lenses on the SL2 and I know that I will have about a 20 MP image, but what will be the effective focal lengths, for example, what would be the focal length equivalents of my 11-23mm TL lens on the SL2? 11-23 or 18-35?

A: Because the SL2 is cropping the image down to about 20mp, it is the same as using a crop frame sensor camera like the CL. Therefore the 11-23mm would look like a 17-35mm if you were comparing it to a full frame camera.

Q: 6. Does anyone know if the multishot mode works when tethered with CaptureOne? And can you use studio strobes with the multishot mode?

A: Yes, Multishot mode is available on Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera when tether to Capture One. Unfortunately the strobes won't get trigger.

Q: 7. Is camera generated timecode carried on the hdmi output?

A: The SL2 generates a Free Run or Rec Run Time Code and is written to the recorded file. It goes through HDMI. You can set a time or use the camera time. Free run means the timer continues whether the camera is recording or not. Rec run means the timer only runs while the camera is recording.

Q: 8. Does this camera offer "focus peaking" or other focus assists for manual focus lenses?

A: Yes. The Leica SL2 has focus peaking. :)

Q: 9. Is there a way to add GPS functionality to the SL2?

A: You can use the Leica Fotos app on a smartphone and using the location data of the smartphone it can update the photo in the camera with the GPS info. This has been working with previous Leica cameras like the Q2. This should also work with the Leica SL2 as it is also compatible with the Leica Fotos app, even though that specific functionality I do not see listed in the app yet for the SL2. That might just be because the SL2 is new and not released yet, so the app should be updated soon. I also see that a new Leica Fotos 2.0 app is being released on November 21st, so it should have more functionality for the SL2.

Q: 10. Does moire goes away completely with a fixed lens? I understand theres no low pass filter and that may make it impossible to avoid it completely. Thank you very much

A: A prime lens does not really effect the moire that can can happen by cameras with out a low pass filter.

[f/2] I love my Leica M cameras; they have provided me many intimate photos and I expect them continue to do for many years. But with the SL2 and the SL 24-90 Vario-Emarit, one can still have a Leica but do things that are just not possible with the M. Auto focus, zoom, EVF for critical focusing with the 50 Nocti, image stabilization. It's all there.

[Autofocus] Moving from the Sony ecosystem (A7rll, A6500) to the Leica CL was a big step up and moving from the CL to the SL2 was another big step up. I dont want to go anywhere without it! The IQ is amazing, and the whole shooting experience to me is the best! Even with non-Leica lenses from Sigma and Panasonic (the other L-mount alliance partners) the IQ is very Leica. Great micro contrast, and perfect color science! Nothing to improve IMHO! Even not that expensive! Compare to the new Sony A1 which costs more than the SL2!

Photo of our old cat taken with the Sigma 45mm 2.8 Contemporary lens on the SL2, a nice compact combo for street photography!

[Full-Frame] I am using this with my M lenses with the leica adapter. The EVF is very good and focusing is very easy. The IBIS is unbelievable. I have shot with the Apo 90 M @ 1/5 of second with clear photos. Battery life is good. I am using the Geotap Photos Pro 2 for geotagging. Waiting for my tether from B & H to try tethering. Strobe with the B10 works well.

[3.15 lb] Is it expensive? Yes! But there is something about it that is inviting and encourages me to go out and shoot pictures for the joy of photography... I had a Nikon Z7 but had been lusting after the Leica. The Z7 RAW files are fantastic -- a great camera. The Leica is great and it inspires me get out and shoot. Subjective - Yes! But art and inspiration require a catalyst that works for you... Happy photography!

[Full-Frame] I don’t know what you want in a camera. Only you can answer that. But what I wanted was a state-of-the-art image maker that was robustly built and made to last. I wanted this to be my last full frame camera. I wanted a camera that felt good in my hands, that exudes quality workmanship and ergonomic simplicity. I wanted a hunk of finely machined metal instead of the plastic that’s out there by so many. I wanted a camera from a company that has a ethos of excellence and that builds their products with an uncompromising value proposition that places the image fIrst. I wanted a camera that gives me just the right features I need to make great images and nothing more. I wanted a camera that integrates hand-in-glove with the best glass you can buy. I chose the Leica SL2. Yes, you pay a lot for Leica. Quality always costs more. Do I regret buying it? Not for a second. I know I will keep and enjoy this camera for the rest of my days and that alone makes it a great deal.

[f/2] I have been an SL user for the past three years. I shoot mostly wildlife but also do portraits and landscapes. THe SL1 has been fantastic but when I saw the increased resolution and more importantly the IBIS on the SL2 I had to make the move. After trying the camera out several times in Leica stores I made my purchase. I am able to get tac sharp images handheld easily down to 1/30sec and with a bit of breathing down to 1/8sec. The camera also breathes new life into my older R lenses, especially my 100mm APO Macro, which was virtually unusable on the SL Type 601 without a tripod. I am also able to get sharp shots on my 90-280 at the long end at 1/50, though a bit more consistently around 1/80, still pretty fantastic. The higher resolution also gives me the ability to maintain detail after cropping, and I'd say 50% crop and more is still well within tolerance. The menu system and button layout are also amazing, by far the best of any Full Frame Mirrorless camera. The grip is also much better than the Type 601 and the ability to charge or run with battery via USB-C is super nice. Battery life is a bit shorter but not bad. I am also still in process of experimenting with video but so far its pretty good, though without an external recorder it will have its limits. Overall for the price and given the numerous upgrades from the 601 the SL2 is a no brainer upgrade IMHO.

[Autofocus] I initially ordered the Leica M10R but it’s delivery was still pending. However my other choice was the Leica SL2. After reading the reviews and watching utube I was excited to see if all said was true. Yes this camera delivers! Shooting a very low shutter speeds was not a problem to obtain clear concise photos due to its In camera Image stabilization.
The final image is consistent with Leica’s traditional quality and the auto focus is a nice change from the traditional Manuel focus. I also purchased the Leicas 24-90mm lens which is phenomenal but somewhat large and heavy but there are sacrifices I in life.

[L-Mount] If you have a collection of Leica lenses, this camera will create the best photos of any Leica camera you have ever used. Not only that, it shoots images way faster than any Leica I have used and renders them at close to 50 MPixels.

But the biggest surprise for me is the video quality and how cinematic it is. The Logfile modes are amazing, but even natural modes with no grading require are gorgeous. I'm not sure how they did it. I guess their color science is that good.

[90mm] The Leica sl2 is by far the best camera I've owned. It's minimalistic design isn't just for aesthetics. It keeps you focused on the art of photography, rather than being distracted by an array of buttons, switches, and unnecessary menu items. The build is unsurpassed. It's a titan among other cameras. Nothing feels like it. I currently own a Fuji GFX 50s, and the sl2 makes it feel like a toy.

Image quality is so good it'll almost bring you to tears. The sl2 renders color amazingly well. It's an absolute dream to own.
