Staking the claim as the reference 50mm, the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera with 50mm f/1.4 Lens Kitfrom Leica promises to create phenomenal images with edge-to-edge sharpness, even wide open. Designed for Leica's full-frame SL-series of mirrorless cameras, this 50mm benefits from a new design granted by the short flange distance. It also leverages two aspherical elements and four anomalous partial dispersion elements in order to keep aberrations to an absolute minimum. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 furthers your imaging capabilities by creating images with a shallow depth of field and in low-light conditions.

A multi-layer coating helps prevent flare and ghosting along with the included rectangular lens hood. The internal focusing lens also has a non-rotating filter ring for precise use of numerous filter types. Additionally, it boasts a dust- and moisture-resistant design.

This benchmark standard 50mm lens provides a natural field of view with incredible performance across the image and outstanding sharpness. As an L-mount optic it is also compatible with T-series APS-C cameras where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.

Super-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and provides excellent control over focus position for selective focus applications.

Two aspherical elements and four anomalous partial dispersion glass elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range and increase image sharpness and clarity.

A multi-layer coating helps prevent and minimize flare and ghosting.

Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in trying shooting conditions.

Internal focusing design prevents the front filter ring from rotating during operation to better enable working with circular polarizers, graduated ND filter, or other types of filters dependent on a specific orientation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does anyone know if the multishot mode works when tethered with CaptureOne? And can you use studio strobes with the multishot mode?

A: Yes, Multishot mode is available on Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera when tether to Capture One. Unfortunately the strobes won't get trigger.

Q: 2. Does the Leica SL2 have a built in HDR processor?

A: Unfortunately, this camera does not have a built in HDR processor. You would have to take the images and combine them in post yourself or look into the SL2-S if you're looking for a Leica that can do HDR.

Q: 3. Do I have to turn off the IBIS when using it on a tripod?

A: While the instruction manual does not have a specific recommendation concerning the above, I personally recommend if you will be using a tripod, disable the in-camera image stabilization inside the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Digital Camera's menu to prevent issues with the stabilization system looking for non-existent camera movement and introducing movement/artifacts in the image.

Q: 4. Does this camera made crop when shoot 4k dci at 60 fps?

A: Yes, there is a small crop when shooting 4K DCI at 60fps on the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera (BH #LESL2SL).

Q: 5. Is there a way to add GPS functionality to the SL2?

A: You can use the Leica Fotos app on a smartphone and using the location data of the smartphone it can update the photo in the camera with the GPS info. This has been working with previous Leica cameras like the Q2. This should also work with the Leica SL2 as it is also compatible with the Leica Fotos app, even though that specific functionality I do not see listed in the app yet for the SL2. That might just be because the SL2 is new and not released yet, so the app should be updated soon. I also see that a new Leica Fotos 2.0 app is being released on November 21st, so it should have more functionality for the SL2.

Q: 6. Does the lack of a mechanical shutter cause rolling shutter problems?

A: Yes. When shooting 4k video, the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera does exhibit a rolling shutter affect that is much worse compared to other similar range full frame mirrorless cameras.

Q: 7. Can you make in-camera double exposures?

A: I'm sorry, no, the SL2 does not do in camera multiple exposures.

Q: 8. Are V60 speed rated cards sufficient for SL2...or V90 has to be used?

A: For photography related things V60 is totally fine. V90 would be best for sustained video recording in 4K.

Q: 9. is the body metal?

A: The body is comprised of aluminum and magnesium.

Q: 10. what is in the box?

A: In the Box Leica SL2 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) Leica BP-SCL4 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (8.4V, 1860mAh) Leica BC-SCL4 Battery Charger Leica SL Camera Cover Leica S Camera Strap for Leica S Medium Format DSLR Limited 2-Year Warranty

[L-Mount] I switched from TL2 to SL2-S and have no regrets. Its simplicity, ease of use is excellent, and the image quality is fantastic (colours, skin tone, sharpness, etc.).

A lot of people knock the autofocus, but I'm 99% happy with it for stills, and manual focus is the way to go for video anyway.

I tried the Sigma 28-70, which is a super lens by default, but the Leica version is better. Not just because of the build quality, but also the image quality. Yes, the 24-90 is a hair better and noticeably heavier (I tried that too), I think the kit lens is somewhere between the Sigma 24-70 and the Leica 24-90.

I give it 5 stars, but if it was a little lighter I would give it 6. :) After a full day of shooting, you can feel the weight, but it's lightened if you buy a good neck strap.

[Autofocus] Rather than a myriad of buttons, dials, and gizmos -- Leica builds a UI (User Interface) designed for photographers, not computer geeks.
Stills settings are separate from Video settings and all are logically presented for instant access.
Most importantly for me, the old fashioned stills photographer, the image's RAW files (DNG like Adobe) have amazing depth in both shows and highlights yet are adaptable to the creator's wishes.

[L-Mount] This is the perfect little sister to accomany my Leica SL2. Same awesome, intuitive menu, just better light sensitivity and videos, but 24.6 Megapixels rather than 47.3. I'm selling most of my other gear to buy nothing but Leica. Leica gives better color right out of the box, sharper, plus awesome image stabilization to handhold almost anything. The DNG format is more widely supported than CR2 or CR3, saving a step using certain software.

[Autofocus] I hesitated a bit because of the lower resolution (compared to the SL2). However, the BSI sensor is amazing and great for low light. High sensitivity and high shutter speed is exactly what I was looking for. From a purely aesthetic point of view, this camera is beautiful and extremely well designed. It's just a completely different level. Highly recommeded.

[47.9°] Comparing this camera to the SL2 is more apples and oranges than I would have thought. The SL2-S is great in low light, and has somewhat faster autofocus. While both cameras produce gorgeous images, there are differences in what comes directly out of the camera. They are not huge differences and can be easily corrected afterwards. The best review of this camera I have seen, and one that explores the differences between the SL2-S and the SL2 is the review from Steve Huff (one of the reviews on this site). I think that he provides an accurate assessment.

I am still getting used to both cameras but I really enjoy the feel of the SL series camera body and the ease of use of the controls. While I bought the SL2 before the SL2-S came out, I can see that there are enough differences between the two that I am quite happy to have both. I think the SL2 excels in landscape, architecture, and in anything where I need to crop and can thus benefit from the larger file size.

The SL2-S would be my choice for general purpose travel, evening and night photography (particularly street scenes), and most action-related stuff such as my dogs. Admittedly, neither camera has the incredible autofocus capability of recent higher end Sony or Canon cameras but both the SL2 and SL2-S are capable with the edge going to the SL2-S.

[50mm] I love how this camera is made . Super solid and I don't have to worry about it getting water and dust in it . Not the best autofocus but it's manageable as long as you know your workarounds .

The 4K video is amazing !! Plus the HD 180 FPS is a nice feature to have . Oh and did I mention about being able to hook this up with a V-Mount battery via usb -C to Dtap cable ? That and the Atomos ninja v make it a nice compact run and gun filmmaking kit .

The Leica look is an obsession that a lot of Leica owners would admit to as a reason for purchasing this tool . Despite some of it's minor short comings , it's an amazing step forward in my career being able to provide images from this camera .

Thank you B&H for shipping this out to me in a timely manner ! You guys are the best !

[47.9°] When I first ordered this camera was just an expensive Panasonic S5 which I own. It NOT. It takes photography to the next level. The touch interface on camera best I have seen on a camera. The ergonomics of this camera is perfect for my hand. The ISO and Dynamic range are simply incredible. The release of firmware 2.0 has brought more fantastic features to this master peace.

[47.9°] I thought about this purchase for awhile. So glad I splurged. This camera and lens combo is fantastic.

[f/22] I have been a photographer for many years and always dreamt of owning a Leica. Although I would have preferred the M-11, the price tag of body + lenses was unaffordable. I settled for the SL2-S, with a
Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm F/2.8 ASPH zoom. Great combination! I am enjoying both the camera and the lens. Image quality is great. My only concern is the cumulative weight of these two elements. I'm currently in the market for a couple of primes that will address my concern.
