The apple mdp plugs into the belkin thunderbolt dock, then the male end of this cable plugs into the apple mdp. The female end of this cable plugs into my monitor. My Macbook air setup would need more explaining, but that is how I use this cable. (It allows me an additional monitor for my Macbook Air.)Hope this helps.
