The product of a corroboration between Tele Vue NP127fli f/5.3 Astrograph Refractor Telescopeand Finger Lakes Instrumentation (FLI), the Tele Vue NP127fli f/5.3 Astrograph Refractor Telescopeis a purpose-built wide-field astro-imaging optical tube assembly (OTA) made to specifically work with FLI's ultra-precise Atlas Focuser, CenterLine filter wheel, and ProLine imaging cameras. Since the designer's intent was to create an astro-imaging instrument its performance has been engineered with an emphasis on superior performance featuring a 127mm aperture, 680mm focal length, and a fast f/5.3 focal ratio.

The telescope's Nagler-Petzval refractor optical configuration was designed by Tele Vue's founder Al Nagler with its objective consisting of five lens elements set in three groups configured with a two-element full aperture objective in the front and a two-element sub-aperture doublet set back in the optical tube. The NP17fli has a built-in Tele Vue Large Field Corrector lens that corrects for chromatic and spherical aberrations to produce clear and crisp images with true color rendition across the entire field of view. An image plane correction system enables all objects through the entire depth of field, no matter their distances from each other, to be brought into perfect focus.

Tele Vue and FLI have designed an imaging system that not only produces superior images, but is uniquely capable of handling large imaging rigs. These large rigs can have multiple peripherals such as filter wheels, off-axis guiders, and CCD cameras; and the often uneven weight distribution can lead to damaging torque on delicate focusers and OTAs. The NP127fli was conceived, designed, and built to eliminate these problems and provide an imaging platform that can handle complicated rigs without a problem.

[FLI Atlas] I was looking for a new apochromatic refractor that was as large as possible while still remaining airline carry-on portable. There are a lot of options out there, ranging from inexpensive Chinese scopes to highly rated Takahashi to unobtainable (and unaffordable) scopes from Astro-Physics. The TV-85 is premium priced, but it has a lot of advantages over other scopes. First, it’s very rugged- more than just about any other scope. I’ve owned a TeleVue Pronto for over 30 years and carried it on lot of trips, and it still works like new. Second, it’s from a U.S. company who provide great warranty support and who have been great innovators in telescope and eyepiece design over the years. Over half the premium eyepieces on the market are copies of TeleVue designs. The evening it arrived I took it outside for a test, and I wasn’t disappointed. Contrast is excellent, with tiny stars showing against a black background. There’s no discernible chromatic error- gone is the purple glow seen at high magnifications in my Pronto. I’m looking forward to taking it out to a truly dark sky site. 5

We use this device for planetary and terrestrial viewing, and photography. Still learning after all this time, but we remain enthusiastic and satisfied owners. 5

[4.3°] I received this a few days ago for viewing planets, particularly Saturn and Jupiter, though my Celestron C8 cassegrain. I have several 2-inch Tele Vue eyepices (up to 16 mm) as well as a 6.5mm and 9.0mm Baader Morpheus eyepieces for greater magnification. The Powermate used with the 20mm Nagler Type 2 and the 16mm Nagler Type 2 provided greater clarity and easier viewing than the Baader eyepieces. Views were sharp to the edge of the field. I was impressed. I'm thinking of replacing the Baaders with another shorter focal length Tele Vue with which to use with the Powermate for even greater clear, sharp magnifications on nights of good seeing. The Powermate is more expensive than a barlow, but the quality of magnification with really good eyepieces is worth the money. I'm not parting with this--ever! 5

[f/5.3] I purchased a used copy of the TV-85 in January 2023 from B&H. It was listed as a 10 and sure enough the telescope met that very high standard. As noted in the other reviews, the TV-85 is a beautifully designed and constructed instrument. One area not discussed in the reviews to any extent is the Tele Vue system. The TV-85 is one part of the system. The mounts, eyepieces, diagonals and other accessories are designed and constructed to the same high standards. The accessory kit for the TV-85 is expensive, but none of the pieces are starter gear or the bargain basement kit eyepiece. The pieces fit and work together in a manner that helps its user. The point of this comment is state that the TV-85 is one part of a system and that the system as a whole is greater than the sum of its pieces. This is a wonderful scope but so is the entire package. 5

[5" (127 mm)] Exquisite optics and mechanical construction. Built to the level of quality expected in professional scientific instruments. 85mm aperture is perfect balance between portability and adequate light gathering power for most viewing situations. Haven’t used it much yet because of winter weather, but views of M42 exhibited high contrast with excellent resolution of 4 Trapezium stars at 67x. Views of the moon are very crisp and richly detailed along the terminator. 5

[4.3°] This is an heirloom-quality telescope. The optics are extremely clear - literally transparent. I've wanted one for 20 years but could not afford one in my youth. Now that I have it, I wish I would have sacrificed back then and had 20 years of viewing with younger eyes. So many purchases I've made in those years that ended up in the garbage or on eBay when I could have enjoyed looking at the planets and deep sky objects. This is one of the few items I hear people regret selling and end up purchasing a second time. If I were to break it or have it stolen, I would buy it again with no hesitation. 5
