The 72mm Formatt Hitech 16-Stop ND Filter 72mmis a solid neutral density filter providing a 16-stop reduction in exposure. This 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 4.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 16-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. In regards to the solar filters, is there any color change to the sun? Is it more yellow/orange, or white like other filters?

A: The Formatt Hitech 105mm Firecrest Ultra ND 6.0 Filter (20-Stop) would render color very similar to what the eye sees. This filter should not be used for directly viewing the sun; always use an approved ISO 12312-2 certified solar filter when observing the Sun through optics or cameras.

Q: 2. I have both ND 1.8 and 3.0. I found they are so different in coating. Both sides of ND 3.0 are the same. Surface of ND 3.0 like a blue mirror. I can see myself clearly in it. One side of ND 1.8 like a normal mirror with very low reflection. Another side of ND 1.8 have variant color looked in different direction. Both NDs are purchased in B&H. The 1.8 one is used. I'm not sure whether they are all right. Can you confirm this? Thank you.

A: I have both ND 1.8 and 0.9. Both sides of ND 1.8 and 0.9 are the sameSurface of ND 1.8 and 0.9 like a blue

Q: 3. Purchased FirecrestUltra 100x100mm ND 3.0 filter. It came with some self sticking foam gasket in separate bag. There are no instructions how to install the gasket.Question: which side of the filter should the gasket be installed on? One side of the filter has writing on.

A: Put the gasket on the side that does NOT have the writing.

Q: 4. Does this filter fit Cokin P holder?

A: Yes, it will fit either the Formatt Hitech or Cokin P Series filter holder.

Q: 5. Is this filter rated as a solar filter suitable for photographing the sun?

A: Formatt Hitech 105mm Firecrest Ultra ND 5.4 Filter (18-Stop) does not have an ISO rating for safe solar viewing. It may work for a camera as it is not sensitive as human eyes, but if you want to be 100% safe I would recommend looking for a filter that is listed with an ISO rating for safe solar viewing.

Q: 6. is this the same as firecrest irnd filter? I have firecrest irnd filter now and is looking for another one.

A: This filter is an IRND filter from the Firecrest Series.

Q: 7. Is this filter compatible with the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye lens? In particular, will there be the Vignette effect?

A: I don't know how you plan on attaching it to the lens but if you just hold it in front of the lens, you will get some vignetting that can be adjusted in post. BTW, there is really no other way to use a filter with this lens other than holding it or using the rear gelatin filter holder that takes cut to size gel filters.

Q: 8. Will this work with the smallrig Lightweight Matte Box? I see many people saying 100x100mm are incompatible but they say 4x4 inch are... confusing or what??

A: The Formatt Hitech 100 x 100mm Firecrest Ultra ND 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) is incompatible with the SmallRig Lightweight Carbon Fiber Matte Box because the filter trays on the matte box support 4mm thick filters, and the Formatt Hitech filter is 2mm thick.

Q: 9. Are the filters stackable?

A: It is stackable. It does have 77 mm front filter thread.

Q: 10. Will these work on the lee holder system??

A: Yes you could use these with a 100mm Lee holder https://bhpho.to/2QqpVki.

[Aluminum] Another ND filter in my tool kit. Different brands can produce somewhat different effects. Some people like it, other's don't. I prefer to look at it as another option when making my picture. It is nice to have options. Optical quality is awesome, and that is what matters.

[0.2 lb] This is the best ND I could find. I was concerned about color slight color shifts & skin tones but so far it has not been an issue.

[72 mm] I bought this to pair with my Polar Pro 2-5 VND PMII for times where 5 stops still isn't enough, such as a recent scene in the middle of the day where we were shooting around T1.9, and it works fantastically. No color shift, no vignette. Great for the price.

[0.2 lb] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.

[Multi Coated] This is my second graduated filter (after a square one from cokin that got scratched very fast). Since my camera does not have HRD mode and I don't have a software that would let me stack RAW files, this filter is perfect for balancing bright skies with much darker foreground. It's solidly made and I find it easy to clean. Definitely much better quality than my previous one.

[Aluminum] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens.

Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details.

[72 mm] I bought this for the eclipse. I should have gone a bit darker but that was my fault not the filter. It does a great job retaining color accuracy. I have others that added yellow tint and this one kept pure white.
