The Akai EWI5000 - Electronic Wind Instrumentfrom Akai EWI5000 - Electronic Wind Instrumentcombines innovative instrument design, wireless connectivity, and a sound library from SONiVOX to create an expressive and versatile wind instrument. The unit features a responsive mouth piece with an air-pressure level sensor and bite sensor for precisely controlling volume and pitch dynamics. Eight precision dials allow for adjusting instrument or effect parameters on the fly - tweak filter, reverb, chorus, LFO, breath amount, bite amount, semitone tuning, and fine tuning.

With 2.4 GHz low-latency wireless connectivity, the EWI5000 allows for performing freely without being captive to an output cabling. It supports stereo wireless audio and includes a receiver for instant mobility on the stage or in the studio. The instrument also supports wired audio and MIDI connections for integrating with other external performance and production hardware. A 1/4" output can connect directly to a PA system and a 1/8" headphone output allows for private practicing. And since it is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it can be played anywhere.

Multiple finger modes support flute, oboe, and saxophone fingering. An EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) Mode is also included for brass players. The controller ships with more than 3 GB of built- sounds designed by SONiVOX, with instruments that span just about every music genre and provides traditional orchestral sounds (e.g. horn, brass, woodwind, and strings) and non-traditional sounds (e.g. progressive synths, basses, and leads) for immediate access.

A software editor allows for manipulating the included sound library using a Mac or PC computer. Simply connect the instrument to the computer via USB, call up an instrument from the library, and use the filter, two LFOs, pan knob, tune control, and multiple envelopes to tweak it into something entirely new. Custom edits can be stored directly on the EWI5000 for a personalized instrument library.

[29.6 x 7 x 6"] The set up is pretty simple. Got it playing in minutes. The battery and wireless work so well. The fine tuning computer stuff is not essential, but it is complex. Learning the new fingering has some cool benefits for octaves and quick phrase transposing up down. It is a bit of a surprise, all the possibilities to figure out. Making the Trumpet scale transitions will take practice. All Good. Great sounds and dynamics. Fancy stuff.

[29.6 x 7 x 6"] A fantastic value for the money. From beginner to expert musician can have so much fun and enjoyment with this recorder type instrument. Also great that it uses the recorder base for the fingering and is very intuitive. Being able to change keys, makes it fantastic for playing with transposing instruments.
The 10 different voices : two being oriental instruments the other eight being western add to its flexibility. For instance, the Trumpet voice can be shifted lower so that it sounds and can play the range of the trombone. ,

[29.6 x 7 x 6"] The dual voices and quality of the built in sounds let you play many styles. You can cover many of the guitar and keyboard parts of popular songs. It's more familiar in operation to a guitar but you can do a good job of 'being' the keyboardist too with it.
The addition of sus4 and add9 chords on the OM-108 model mean you can mimic the nuances found in a lot of popular music. The voices work well with tracks from signature 80's bands like Styx, Toto, Journey, Springsteen, Boston, etc. You can play rhythms, arpeggio keys, and pick out many signature riffs from your favorite songs. Build quality is good and the strum plate is a great control surface. It's expensive but it is a serious instrument. If you engage with it you will have serious fun!

[5.15 lb] Use this for small home studio. Nice and clean signal and like I said, built like a tank. Didn't need the stand for home use.

[29.6 x 7 x 6"] I'm gonna put it to you straight: I love this thing.Great things about it? Multiple fingering modes, two banks, rechargeable, wireless with ridiculously low latency (even when battery gets low) and a sound editor software that delivers. Having higher quality sounds compared to EWI4000s is great and being able to layer or octave those sounds without being hooked up to a computer is great for random creativity. For starters, it has a good sound that is actually adaptive to your style of play. I went through the whole of the sound bank and was pleased as I believe it's a true update. There will be uninformed haters out there that will say the sounds are not realistic or sound kazoo-like after listing to samples through a YouTube video, but what they're failing to realize is that it is an EWI, not a reed instrument; and, YouTube sound quality considering the source material and player isn't always that great. The EWI accomplishes everything it set out to and does not misrepresent what it can do in its instruction manual or marketing. I find that if I do a forceful brass hit or a strong blow using the saxophone sounds that there is a distinct difference in how the sound is presented and how it is carried. I find this ability built into the vast majority of sounds I use. These are the great things about the instrument.Areas in need of improvement? Let's see.. some thought that having a wireless MIDI ability would be useful, but honestly, I don't find this that important. Use a cord or acquire a wireless setup that you trust and believe in. Being able to load your own sounds? Get an iPad or a computer, VST library and software and use a cord. Again, I don't find this to be a hang-up. I owned the EWI4000s and did just fine with cords. I did fine then and I'll do fine now.All in all a great buy. Highly recommended. Highly responsive. Highly customizable. And a highly prized member of my instrument collection.

[29.6 x 7 x 6"] I’m not a musician, I can’t read music, and I don’t know music theory. But I can play this and it makes me smile! I’ve had this instrument (yes, it is an actual instrument - not a toy) for close to a month now and I’ve played it almost every day. It’s allowing me to learn to make music while also having fun with music.

The strumplate is magical. It feels so nice and accurate. It is sensitive enough to pick up the lightest touch (although, it is not force sensitive in how it plays a chord). The “keyboard” if you will is something you either get used to or may not enjoy. I’ve learned to accept it, as its keys are firm, yet mushy-ish rubber buttons. The body is made of a high quality and strong plastic. It isn’t flimsy feeling in my observations and feels sturdy when you play into it. Once you learn its characteristics, you can be one with the Omnichord and just have a blast!

This instrument has many uses too, as it can be used as a MIDI controller! I’ve connected it to my MacBook Pro and have played so many different sounds/electronic instruments through Logic Pro. I’m still learning the ins and outs, but I’m seeing limitless options with how you can play this thing! The onboard sounds are crisp, clear, and this little speaker can play big! Also, knowing it’s part analog, part electronic is neat. You can tell there was a lot of thinking that went into this.

Overall, I’d buy this again if I ever needed to (who knows how many Suzuki will make though!) simply because it’s has captured my attention for this long and brings a smile to may face every time I play it. You’ll be the hit of the crowd when you show this off, too! It’s unique, it stands out, and it’s simply a joyful part of my day.
