This 85 x 85mm Firecrest ND Filter for Solar Photography 85x85mmis a solid neutral density filter providing a 6-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 3.3 x 3.3" / 85 x 85mm and is 0.08" / 2mm-thick, making it compatible with the Formatt Hitech 85mm Filter Holder.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 1.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 6 stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt Hitech 85mm Filter Holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this filter fit Cokin P holder?

A: Yes, it will fit either the Formatt Hitech or Cokin P Series filter holder.

Q: 2. Is this Solar filter ISO 12312-2 certified?

A: Unfortunately, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 certified. It should not be used to look directly at the sun with our eyes. It can be used for the camera to take a photo of the sun. Look only in the LCD live view to compose the photo. Do not look in an optical viewfinder.

Q: 3. is this the same as firecrest irnd filter? I have firecrest irnd filter now and is looking for another one.

A: This filter is an IRND filter from the Firecrest Series.

Q: 4. By the picture, this filter looks like it is graduated. Is it in fact built with a graduation in it?

A: Hi! No, this is not a grad ND filter. It must simply be the marketing photograph. I assure you that this is a solid ND filter.

Q: 5. can this filter be used to record the upcoming solar eclipse on my hpx 370 camera?

A: Yes, this is the correct filter for recording a Solar eclipse on your Panasonic HPX 370 camera.

Q: 6. Will this fit a Nikon drop-in holder?

A: Unfortunately, solar filters are not to be used in a drop in holder. The lens will get too hot when pointed at the sun and the aperture blade may melt. The solar filter needs to be placed on the front of the lens.

Q: 7. Would this be considered a 52mm drop in filter for Nikon lens?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (52mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is too thick to work as a drop-in filter.

Q: 8. Does this filter fit Cokin P holder?

A: Yes, you'll need the adapter ring for the P holder, but it does work with either the Formatt-Hitech or Cokin P Filter Holders.

Q: 9. Is this filter safe for solar eclipse photography?

A: Haida 95mm NanoPro One Million X Edition ND Filter (20 Stop) BH #HAHD460795 is not rated for solar photography no.

Q: 10. I have both ND 1.8 and 3.0. I found they are so different in coating. Both sides of ND 3.0 are the same. Surface of ND 3.0 like a blue mirror. I can see myself clearly in it. One side of ND 1.8 like a normal mirror with very low reflection. Another side of ND 1.8 have variant color looked in different direction. Both NDs are purchased in B&H. The 1.8 one is used. I'm not sure whether they are all right. Can you confirm this? Thank you.

[Multi Coated] Another ND filter in my tool kit. Different brands can produce somewhat different effects. Some people like it, other's don't. I prefer to look at it as another option when making my picture. It is nice to have options. Optical quality is awesome, and that is what matters.

[0.22 lb] I was on a short road trip and used this alone, and with the Formatt Hitech 10 stop ND filter. The results were superb in both cases - no colour cast. An added benefit of the Formatt filter is it is very thin, so vignetting is less of an issue. I would encourage people to take a filter wrench, just in case...

[0.22 lb] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens.

Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details.

[Glass] You get what you pay for when it comes to filters, but you also don't have to pay $200+ for the big names. This thing has basically no color cast, adds no noticeable flare issues, and the 3-stop measure is quite accurate.

[Glass] Works as expected. Clear, knocking out stops to slow your shutter. Good price too. Recommended.

[Multi Coated] Hi,

Purchased in late 2020 for Sigma 105mm 1.4 (Nikon).

This ND filter is really good because it does not create any color cast. The ND allows me to use the lens at f1.4 without overexposing the shadows (while using my strobes). It is a great ND filter, more neutral than a few others I purchased for a 85mm 1.8.

High recommendations.

[0.22 lb] suppose you want to shoot wide open f/ 1.4 or f/1.2.. counting down from the "sunny 16 rules" from a bright sunny day, you would need a 2-3 stop worth of ND filter for the camera to be able to shoot at that open aperature, this can do it!! The mild color cast is easily adjusted post.

[Glass] Lightweight with no color cast that I had with toffee or bw Nd filters, have split and other filters from this company. Satisfied with results.

[0.22 lb] Most ND filters do not block IR at the level suggested by their rating so images are overexposed if you use an LE calculator. These Firecrest ND filters are great for long exposure IR shooting with the resulting exposures very near what the calculator suggests.
