Tis 85 x 110 Formatt Hitech 1-Stop ND Filter 85x110helps to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft-edge line of transition between the density and clear areas. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.3 density provides a 1-stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. This filter measures 3.3 x 4.3" / 85 x 110mm and is 0.08" / 2mm-thick, making it compatible with the 85 Filter Holder. Its vertical orientation indicates that the density's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Graduated ND 0.3 filter for darkening skies and other bright areas of the image.

Provides a 1 stop reduction in light in selective areas.

Soft-edge transition is ideal for circumstances there is not a distinct line of separation between the bright and dark zones of the image.

A vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the 85 Holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this filter suitable and safe for photographing a solar eclipse?

A: This filter is not certified for Solar viewing. We do have Solar filters https://bhpho.to/2F2y4ab.

Q: 2. Is there a front and back to this FirecrestUltra filter? Which side to install the gasket on? I intend to use it with LEE filter holder. The filter's two sides have a different color sheen when you looking at it under an angle.. side with writing has a hint of reddish/ black color reflection, and side without writing has black / bluish reflection. What is recommended filter orientation while using in the filter holder.. does it make any difference if either side is facing away from the lens? Format-Hitech FirecrestUltra100x1003.0

A: FYI! This is the Information from Format-Hitech.USA The colors you see are due to light passing through the filter. These are not directional but it is always good to put the engraved writing on the filter facing away from the camera for identification when in the holder as well as on the chance that another type of filter is directional.

Q: 3. Does this filter come in a case?

A: No it doesnt!I boughta href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/212303-REG/B_W_65024717_E1_Filter_Pouch.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/212303-REG/B_W_65024717_E1_Filter_Pouch.html/aAnd its suitable.Mika from Finland

Q: 4. How's the vignetting when shooting wide open? Do you have to crop any?

A: I use the the filter ONLY on my Canon 24mm TS-E... and I have not had any issues on any of my images from using this filter. As the old saying goes... you get what you pay for... so, if you're using sub-par glass using an expensive filter, EXPECT sub-par results... no matter the type of filter you use!

Q: 5. Will these work on the lee holder system??

A: Yes you could use these with a 100mm Lee holder https://bhpho.to/2QqpVki.

Q: 6. Are the filters stackable?

A: It is stackable. It does have 77 mm front filter thread.

Q: 7. I have both ND 1.8 and 3.0. I found they are so different in coating. Both sides of ND 3.0 are the same. Surface of ND 3.0 like a blue mirror. I can see myself clearly in it. One side of ND 1.8 like a normal mirror with very low reflection. Another side of ND 1.8 have variant color looked in different direction. Both NDs are purchased in B&H. The 1.8 one is used. I'm not sure whether they are all right. Can you confirm this? Thank you.

A: I have both ND 1.8 and 0.9. Both sides of ND 1.8 and 0.9 are the sameSurface of ND 1.8 and 0.9 like a blue

Q: 8. Is this filter compatible with the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye lens? In particular, will there be the Vignette effect?

A: I don't know how you plan on attaching it to the lens but if you just hold it in front of the lens, you will get some vignetting that can be adjusted in post. BTW, there is really no other way to use a filter with this lens other than holding it or using the rear gelatin filter holder that takes cut to size gel filters.

Q: 9. Will these Formatt 46mm Firecrest Ultras fit the Z800 mm as screw in filters?

A: The Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL3L) Glass Filter compatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens does not allow the 46 mm polarizing filter to come off and to be changed with another filter so this Formatt Hitech 46mm Firecrest Ultra ND 0.9 Filter can't be used.

Q: 10. Purchased FirecrestUltra 100x100mm ND 3.0 filter. It came with some self sticking foam gasket in separate bag. There are no instructions how to install the gasket.Question: which side of the filter should the gasket be installed on? One side of the filter has writing on.

A: Put the gasket on the side that does NOT have the writing.

[Multi Coated] Used for very long exposures in landscapes, I appreciate this extremely well made piece of kit. It does not let me down in any way.

[Glass] I use this for cutting light for long exposures. Primarily I use it for photographing lightning where a long exposure is required even in light conditions. This one has a filter factor of 8 stops, it works great. A neutral density is a staple in my gear bag.

[Glass] I have used this filter for my work for two years and it is perfect. I can use it in my Cokin Z-holder but more often than not just hand hold it. It can easily be combined with a CPL or other ND filter to achieve 4-extra stops which help with waterfalls on sunny days, softening clouds, getting a soft ethereal texture from crashing waves and streams. The nice thing about it is that unlike using very high density screw on ND filters which might make it very difficult to see and focus, especially when using slow f/5.6 lens, you can compose, focus, then use the AF button to lock focus, hold the filter over the lens or other filter, then exposure and click. Very simple and effective. I use this filter a lot. I used to own the extremely expensive SR vari-ND but I sold it for this one because 1) it vignettes at wide angles, 2) does not meter properly due to the physics of the design so you must take test shots and use an iterative approach 3) you can easily over dial in the density which results in a 'cross' in the center where the two polarizers meet. You can't see this effect in the viewfinder since it would be too dark but the result is obvious in the LCD screen. Bottom line, it is much faster to use this filter than a vari-ND and since a vari-ND vignettes at ultra wide angles you end up needing two sets of filters which is just a waste of money. I use this filter a lot along with about 10 other filters which I keep in my two filter pouches that include grad-NDs, CPL, and yes, a screw-on 3-stop ND. No color cast, fast and easy to use compared with any alternative, and very affordable.

[Multi Coated] These Hitech filters are very nice, although made of plastic they don't seem to affect image quality at all. I'm not experiencing any magenta hues or anything odd.

[Multi Coated] I always wondered how to get that creamy effect in a waterfall picture, and this was the answer. Coupled with a good tripod, I can now get some excellent waterfall pictures.
