Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the point of this lens? Wouldn't it make sense for it to be f1.2 or even f1.0 for the price?

A: compering to other 50mm 1.4, this lens has Optical Design 13 Elements in 11 Groups vs (nikon 50mm 1.4 ) 8 Elements in 7 Groups vs ( canon ef 50mm 1.2 ) 8 Elements in 6 Groups , Diaphragm Blades 11, Rounded , vs 9, Rounded , vs 8, Rounded that what makes this lens so good

Q: 2. Will this lens work on a Lecia SL body?

A: Yes, this lens is an L mount so it will fit on the Leica SL body.

Q: 3. I just received this lens and noticed a floating element that moves when I turn the lens end over end. Is this normal, like the focusing elements are free to move until the lens is mounted and camera is powered on?

A: While different manufacturers employ different mechanisms for various reasons within their lens (autofocus motors, image stabilization, etc), I believe in this case what you're seeing is part of their double-magnet linear motor AF system. It would most likely also be something that would only activate when the lens is powered.

Q: 4. Does this lens have a static rear lens element at the mount for better weather sealing?

A: No, the rear element of the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens retracts inside the lens barrel, therefore we recomend keeping the rear cap on if the lens is not mounted on the camera.

Q: 5. I have the Lumix S 18mm and 35mm f1.8 Prime lenses. Would I be happy replacing both of them with this f4 lens?

A: The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens will allow you to easily zoom, so you won't have to switch lenses but the aperture is narrower at f/4. So it depends if you need the better quality in low light of those 1.8 lenses or f/4 is enough for your needs. If you take many photos in low light situations than you might want to stick with the lenses that you have.

Q: 6. What is the primary difference between this and the "non-pro" lenses. Is the glass the same, but different ring controls?

A: The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens would be the only 16-35mm lens designed for the Leica L-mount lens mount. The closest lens options to the above lens would be the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L, B&H # SI142428L, or the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L, B&H # SI185028DCLM. The main difference between the above lens is the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L would be wider and would be twice as bright as it has a constant f/2.8 aperture. Both the Panasonic and Sigma lens are considered professional lenses from the respective manufacturers. The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L would be a more economically-priced lens. It has a brighter aperture with a constant f/2.8 aperture and it has a longer optical zoom range, but the optical image quality would not quite be on par as the image quality from the professional lens options listed above. Build quality and optical performance would be main differences between "professional" lenses and standard or entry-level lenses.

Q: 7. Does the manual focus ring have a hard stop at infinity?

A: There are hard stops at both end of the focus ring while in manual focus mode. This is available with a push/pull action on the focus ring.

Q: 8. Where is the lens made?

A: This lens from B&H is made in Japan.

Q: 9. Does the lens length change when zooming or focusing?

A: This is going to be very high quality serious amateur professional lens. We suspect that along with the advertised minimal breathing there will be minimal, if any, lens length change.

Q: 10. Is the lens collar foot compatible with Arca type tripod quick release ?

A: Yes, the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/4 O.I.S. Lens has an Arca-Type plate on the lens collar.

[Glass] This is definitely a pricey filter, $250, however I believe it is one of the best. I am not going to put a $20 filter on a Canon RF 28-70 f2.

[Aluminum] I always use a protective filter. But as with lens it is best to use the best. This is one of the best. It is worth the money. I am using it on the Nikon 135 f1.8 ZS lens.

[Aluminum] Fantastic, the best of B+W, high-end filter. I love it and it's worth what it costs

[Multi Coated] Most importantly can still attach the hood of my Leica M lenses.

[0.115 lb] It is a personal preference for me as I believe B&W makes some of the finest filters. I also believe you pretty much get what you pay for. I can't see putting a $10-20 filter on a $2K - $3K lense, kind of defeats the purpose of having good glass.

[55 mm] Years ago, a respected photographer recommended B+W filters. I followed his advice and have been happy with the precision and quality of their filters.

[Multi Coated] Excellent quality. I love the granite color instead of the black.
