Resurrecting a revered microphone with new tricks for their EMI Abbey Road Studios line of products, the TG Microphone Type L from Chandler Limited is a large-diaphragm FET condenser mic that sports the bigger-than-solid-state sound and flexibility of its utilitarian workhorse lineage. Like the celebrated original, the TG Mic Type L features the Dual Tone System for two different input stages, but with modifications, for further versatility: System A gives you a mid-forward and harmonically rich sound for wonderful vintage warmth, while the System B setting provides a more pristine, transparent sound with extremely high SPL resistance.

The TG Mic Type L utilizes a cardioid pickup pattern for tight directivity and avoiding unwanted sounds to the rear and sides. The built-in -10 dB pad lets you reign in excessively loud sounds, eliminating distortion. The transducer is a custom design with gold sputtering for high conductivity and corrosion resistance. This microphone includes a swivel mount stand adapter and a bamboo hard case.

In 1968 EMI/Abbey Road Studios saw a change from the valve-driven REDD recording and mixing consoles to the transistorized TG12345 desk. The EMI TG12345 transistor recording console with expanded EQ and, for the first time ever, a compressor/limiter on every channel, would forever leave its sonic imprint on the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” albums, as well as recordings by Paul McCartney John Lennon, and George Harrison.

Conceived in 1967, the TG mixing and mastering consoles would see many revisions throughout the ‘70s before being retired from service in 1983. TG consoles were built by EMI exclusively for their studios and were never commercially available.

The TG Microphone Type L is cardioid and intended as a utilitarian recording studio workhorse. The Type L is capable of rivaling scenarios where the C414, FET47, U87, U67, and C12 traditionally have found favor and may replace the practice of employing a dynamic and a ribbon

in combination on guitar cabinets.

[Phantom Power] I own 3 of these mics, as well as Shure SM81s, AT4050s and Senheisser Mk 4s. If you want extremely quite, low distortion, low coloration mic,s at a low cost, these mics are an excellent buy. I've owned mine for about 10 years and they have been flawless. They are great for drums, acoustic guitars, orchestral recording, etc. These are accurate mics, without romantic colorations.

[Phantom Power] The M-179 doesn't cost much at all for a microphone, but nothing about what you get for a little over $ is cheap: a solid, hard plastic case with protective foam, shockmount and regular mount, and a no-nonsense microphone. The M-179 will get the job done for anything percussion, and its variable pattern gives you flexibility, especially if you get two like I did! :)B&H gives you good deals, fast shipping, and reliable service. If you need a inexpensive workhorse condenser, snag one of these now!

[Cardioid] All jokes aside (which is a very true and accurate statement), this microphone really did put a smile on my face. It didn't need EQ or compression for it to accurately portray the sounds I put in front of it. I bought a pair of these and set one up in front of my guitar and one for my vocal and played a live song that I tracked into pro tools. I couldn't have been happier with the results. Great product and an even better one for the price!

[Phantom Power] I researched many lower cost, large diaphragm condensers and heard Ken Callait recommend the SM27. I planned to purchase it myself, but my wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift, and I've already had the chance to use it on a variety of sources. It is clear and pristine sounding. It works very well on percussion elements, acoustic guitars, and works well for certain types of vocals. I'd find it a little too clean and pretty sounding for rock vocals or anything where an indie vibe is the aim, but if clarity and pure translation are what you want, this mic really delivers. The packaging is nice (I got the version with the shockmount and velveteen case), and it's obviously of solid build quality. Well worth the price tag.

[Phantom Power] The quality of this large diaphragm mic's sound is sensitive, crisp, and clear. The response is well balanced. But the feature that stands out is the ability to select a pickup pattern. We use these in live bluegrass band shows, in the old '30s style where we all crowd around a single mic stand. The wide cardioid pattern is perfect for this. I also use several of these for recording. Versatile, well worth the money.

To use with a good microphone stand because it is a little bit heavy! That of the happiness! In Live or in studio! Bravo CAD !

[Cardioid] The voice sounds very bassy. Its pretty sensitive. Loved the fact that the shock mount came with it. Its well built. Its sensitive. When I monitor it I can hear sounds from far but when I use to for my calls like Zoom or teams, it just sounds great.
