Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this considered a FF lens? So on a S35 chip the focal length would be 1.5x magnification?

A: Yes, the IRIX 45mm T1.5 Cine Lens covers full frame sensors. There will be a 1.5x crop factor when using this lens on cameras with a Super35 sensor.

Q: 2. is this mean that I do not need metabones to using this lens? since its already for MFT?

A: If you have a camera with an MFT mount, you will not need an adapter to use this MFT Mount Lens.

Q: 3. What's the difference between this one to the Sanyang 50? Because the price is 150 high

A: Rokinon has two versions of most of the line of Cinema Lenses, with the slightly higher end version being the DS. Most of the DS lenses have an extra blade or two in the iris providing a better bokeh, and focus markings on both sides of the lens. Some of the Rokinon DS series lenses have more differences, but they are the same product as Sanyang, you are just looking at two different series from the same brand.

Q: 4. Can I use this lens for still photography as well, switching back and forth from video applications?

A: While this is a manual focus cinema lens you can still use it for photography.

Q: 5. what size hoya filter does this lens require?

A: Filter size is 77mm

Q: 6. Does this version produce sharper and better image quality than the 1.4 photo lens? Different optics?

A: This is a cinema lens. There are several differences and none of them are to do with sharpness. First cinema lenses are measured in T stops not F stops. This means that they calculate into the equation how much light the optics lets through (T stops let in more light than F stops). Second, the gear rings are different so that you can put a follow focus on it. Third it has a click less aperture for smooth adjustments during filming. Fourth it has the UMC coating which gives you a little different, more cinematic colors.A Rokinon lens will be as sharp as a Rokinon lens is. That's not a knock, I think they're pretty great for their price.

Q: 7. Is the lens mount user-swappable?

A: This lens is not user-swappable. I recommend going to Duclos Lenses for professional mount conversion and calibration. They offer the IRIX lenses in ARRI PL, Canon EF/RF, L-Mount, Micro 4/3, Nikon Z, and Sony E mounts.

Q: 8. What is the difference between the AS UMC and the DSX lines?

A: The difference between the Rokinon AS UMC DS series and the Rokinon DSX series is that the Rokinon DSX series has weather sealing and a 9 blade iris. The Rokinon AS UMC DS series does not have weather sealing and has only an 8 blade iris.

Q: 9. Looks like you couldn't use a clamp on matte box with this lens because of the lens support?

A: The IRIX 15mm Cine Lens (PL, Feet) has 86mm front filter threads. You can use a step up ring to clamp on a matter box.

Q: 10. Am I correct in my thinking that the T on this cine lens is the equivalent of the F on a photographic lens? If so, at T1.5 is it safe to assume that this would be good in really low light on a 5D Mk3?

A: The short answer is yes. This lens is great in low light on 5DIII. Having said that, F-stop and T-stop are not exactly equivalent, although you can still think of it that way. F-stop measure the size of the opening of a lens, while T-top measures the how much light passes through the lens. Because lenses have different characteristics, two different lenses set to f/4 might let in a slightly different amount of light. On the other hand, two lenses with the same T-stop will let in exactly the same amount of light, making it easier to match shots taken with two different lenses. That's why T-stop is a better than F-stop for film production, and is therefore the standard on cine lenses. If this is confusing or you're just curious to learn more, do a google search for t-stop vs f-stop. There's a lot of info out there.

[45mm] Beautiful visuals, easily accessible focus and aperture rings. A great cine lens; use it wonderfully with the Metabones lens adapter for my MFT Blackmagic Pocket camera. Highly recommend!

[86 mm] I got this to play with more than anything work or hobby related. I like the build quality for the price, and the image quality is better than expected. I am more of a hobbyist, I enjoy the character of this lens. The manual focus and iris are smooth and easy to dial in. Would suggest a pinch cap over the stock metal cap.

[86 mm] I was a little bit skeptical about buying this lens at first considering that I've never heard of Irix before. However, don't let that stop you. This lens is extremely sharp, even at wide-open!!! The footage you can get with this lens at T1.5 is crazy! Not to mention that this lens doesn't have any noticeable color fringing, and is constructed out of a solid metal exterior, and doesn't flare at all when in direct sunlight. If you're looking for a budget cinema lens that punches a lot higher than its price, I can't recommend this lens enough.

[Full Frame] 8K sharpness, weatherproof, low focus breathing, solid metal build quality, 180 degree focus throw. The list of features go on and on. For the price I have never found a lens like this. I compared for months Sigma Art series, SLR Magic’s, Zeiss Milvus. Personally this lens should sit next to higher price brackets like Sigma Cine, New XEENs, Zeiss CP2’s. Having this lens for a week I can say this lens lives up to every feature. Shooting on my Pocket 6K this thing makes it feel like I have a whole new camera or at least like I’m finally taking full advantage of my sensor. Can’t recommend this lens enough. I plan on buying the brand new 15mm Cine and the 150mm Cine macro all 3 will be the price of a single average priced Cine lens!

[Full Frame] But unfortunately I've heard of some of them coming apart internally. So... hopefully mine lasts, because it certainly makes gorgeous images and is a pleasure to rig and use on set. I'd compare it and cut it with my Zeiss Milvus lenses, no joke.

[T1.5] It never stoped to amaze me the kind of build this lens has. Nice big and a little on the heavy size. I will compromise well build for fragility, I may also add this has a very nice glass. Overall very satisfied with the lens.

[86 mm] I've been renting cine lenses for years for some of our bigger projects but never pulled the trigger on getting one. I mean, I have the Sigma 18-35 Art (photo) lens and I just can't justify spending 4K on the cine version. But this lens comes at a great price (paid $1,200) which in early 2020, happens to be cheaper than the Xeen primes. Not to mention Canon, Sigma, Zeiss CPs and the rest. -- I've shot a few test shots and the 45 looks very sharp and smooth with no noticeable CA. Focus throw is 180° and the overall feel is solid! - Can't wait for Irix to come out with a couple of more primes.
