If the computer like MacBook uses USB-C port to power the laptop then the MacBook power cable gets connected to the hub and the USB-C connector of the hub gets connected to the MacBook in order to power the MacBook and the hub. It plugs into the side and provides me with extra USB ports, an audio jack, and an ethernet port. This is really useful when I need to have multiple things plugged in or to extend my display. It also allows a space for my charger which is convenient. It does add a bit of bulk but normally I use mine at a desk so this doesn't affect me 5
