When creating a series of amplifiers, the traditional approach would be to start with a preamp design, and then bolt this on to a range of power amplifiers of different power ratings. However, Blackstar acknowledges the interaction between preamp and power amp and the individual requirements that different amps need.

Therefore, although the preamps do share many similarities, each and every model has had the same individual care and attention during sonic testing and any required tweaking of the circuitry has been applied to ensure each model performs to Blackstar's high tonal expectations.

The MK III Clean channel is a very sophisticated circuit, albeit deceptively simple looking, that is extremely versatile for producing a range of classic clean and crunch tones. The two different voicings use both parts of an ECC83 (12AX7) tube exclusively for producing compression and crunch.

The HT MK III overdrive channels are the next in an evolution from Series One, HT MK I through to HT Venue MK III. The topology shares the same basic building blocks in the gain structure and tonal shaping and includes the cascaded gain stages of an ECC83 double triode valve. However, each amp has had the overdrive tones specifically tweaked, tuned, and refined during hours of listening tests, to optimize the tone for that model.

An important aspect of the Overdrive channels is how well the tone cleans up when the guitar volume is backed off. In conventional valve amp designs, the treble response of the overdriven sound is shaped by a series of cascaded first-order low-pass filters placed between each of the valve stages, which are being overdriven, which often leads to a droopy filter response and a dull or lifeless backed-off tone. In the HT MK III Overdrive channels, the majority of the high-frequency shaping of the distortion is done using a second-order low-pass filter. This has the advantage of removing the unpleasant high-frequency fizz without attenuating the signal below the cutoff frequency.

The conventional three-way guitar EQ network, or tone stack, is a key to the characteristic voice of traditional guitar amplifiers. Classic amplifier designs have their own versions of this network, which leads to their own tonal voicings.

The passive ISF control allows you to infinitely adjust the response of the tone control network between any of the traditional voicings in a way that has never before been possible, for everything from a classic American to vintage British tonal range. The ISF control is interactive, moves the whole tone stack at once, and is continuously variable.

The Voice 1 setting (LED off) has been based on a classic American clean sound, a mid '60s black-face Fender Twin Reverb. This has high headroom, and a bright clean sound, with solid low end. On the HT-20R MK III models, the power amp feedback is automatically adjusted to add presence and sparkle, as well as tightness to the full bottom end.

The Voice 2 setting (LED on) has been based on a much loved vintage Class-A British tone (Vox AC-30). The gain structure is reconfigured to now put the EQ shaping after both valve stages and the power amp is set to have no negative feedback. These, and other carefully voiced parts of the circuit, result in a warm tone with a chimelike top end and relaxed resonant bottom.

Switching to Voice 2 (LED on) on the Overdrive channel will add more gain for the overdrive and reduce power-amp damping, giving livelier highs and more resonant lows. Overall this changes the character of the overdrive from a classic tone to a higher gain, more contemporary tone.

While a traditional, possibly old fashioned, spring reverb is often a choice for tube amps and can be great for Fender-style clean tones, Blackstar felt this wasn't the best choice for modern overdrive tones. This is why they developed their own digital reverbs specifically voiced for both clean and OD tones.

These exclusive Blackstar designs respond well to both the dynamic nature of clean sounds and the more compressed, harmonically rich textures of crunch and high-gain overdrive sounds. In addition, the Reverb Time can be adjusted for Clean and OD channels independently using Blackstar’s Architect software. This level of choice and flexibility simply would not be possible with a mechanical spring reverb.

CabRig is Blackstar’s next-generation IR-based DSP speaker simulator, featuring innovative DSP software that reproduces the rich, dynamic characteristics of real-world guitar cabs:

  • Boasting zero latency and lower CPU usage than other snapshot technologies, CabRig empowers users to sculpt their sound effortlessly
  • The advanced algorithm lets users create new ways of blending mics and cabs without encountering phase issues
  • Blackstar’s Architect software provides access and in-depth control over every aspect of CabRig, granting a vast collection of gear that, in the real world, can only be found in professional recording environments
  • Over 700 combinations of rooms, cabinets, and microphones allow the user to inhabit the role of a sound engineer and get outstanding results every time, without any of the hassle
  • The user has full control over individual EQ and panning for these close mics, exactly as if they were channels on a recording console
  • You also have the option to choose the room in which you want to place the cab, with complete control over the level of the room sound

  • Balanced XLR direct output (compatible with CabRig)
  • Stereo headphone output with improved driver amp for wider compatibility (compatible with CabRig)
  • Stereo 3.5mm line input
  • USB-C connector for 2x2 recording or Architect sofrware parameter editing (compatible with CabRig)
  • Series FX loop with +4 dBu or -10 dBV level switch
  • Standard latching 2-way footswitch input for channel and voicing selection
  • 8- and 16-ohm speaker outputs for connecting to an external cabinet

All HT MK III models have low-noise DC power supplies for the preamplifier tube heaters. This is a feature that was previously only found in very high-end tube amplifiers.

It eliminates any hum that would be induced from the more commonly seen 6.3 VAC heater power and allows high settings of gain to be used without high levels of 50/60 Hz noise and hum being audible.

All PCBs used in the HT MK III amps are double-sided plated-through types. These provide increased mechanical strength. All tubes are specially tested and graded, removing as many tubes that don't meet Blackstar's standards during the selection process as possible.

All amps are specifically biased to ensure the perfect balance of tone, reliability, and tube longevity. The chassis is fabricated from 1.2 and 1.6mm coated steel plating and incorporates other mechanical design features for maximum absorption of physical shocks.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will this come with the cable?

A: This monitor does not come with the cable. You would need to purchase it as well. It is B&H Number B&H # CAUN5UC50.https://bhpho.to/2fZCCo6

Q: 2. Will this work with C300 first camera?

A: It will not. This is not compatible with the original C300.

Q: 3. Can you use an existing mini tripod to mount the bottom of this monopod to enable chicken legs?

A: No you cannot. The only option for a stand for this monopod are the Mogopod TPD 2 tripod leg stand. The end of the monopod features a male-thread which is why it cannot be connected to other 3rd party mini tripods. See the link below for details on the TPD-2 stand for this monopod:http://bhpho.to/1lG3ovY

Q: 4. With this monitor, am I able to use the original “clam shell” at the same time? I guess to be more specific, is there a splitter or additional jack that allows video to be displayed on both monitors?

A: That is not possible.

Q: 5. How many rack space L20R ? I only have 3 rack space left available.

A: Based on the dimensions, you will need 4 rack spaces to accommodate the L-20R. The dimensions are 17.2 (W) × 6.2 (D) × 6.0" (H). Since the height is 6", that is equivalent to 3.4 rack spaces, which is why you would need to have 4 spaces for the L-20R to fit.

Q: 6. Is this compatible with C500 Mark II?

A: Yes, the Canon LM-V1 4" LCD Monitor for Canon C200 & C300 Mk II/Mk III is compatible with the Canon EOS C500 Mark II 5.9K Full-Frame Camera Body (EF Mount), B&H # CAC500II.

Q: 7. Can this function as an audio interface and live mixer at the same time? I need to play backing tracks from Ableton LIve running on a Macbook Pro, and mix that audio output live with other live instruments and microphones.

A: In Audio Interface mode the Zoom LiveTrak L-20R 20-Channel Digital Mixer-Recorder for Stage Use, signals from a computer DAW can also be assigned to a stereo channel for live performance output.

Q: 8. Given the new title and description for this item, - has Canon officially extended support for the LM-V1 with the C300 MkII and C700?

A: Yes, it has.

Q: 9. Will the cable that currently connects my c300 mkII monitor work with the monitor or do I have to buy the Canon UN-5 cable for $269 ?

A: I am using the original cable supplied with my C300MKii

Q: 10. Wishful thinking more than anything, it does say specifically for the C200 , so here goes: Will this work with the C300 II?

A: We (and probably Canon) have not tested this so we only have the opinion that while this monitor may well connect and show an image, we doubt greatly that touch screen control will be possible. When the camera comes out, hopefully someone will be able to test this.

[Yes] I have been using this kit for one year now. So much love for this little amp. It sounds great ! The delay sounds warm. The ISF is useful as an easy EQ. It is portable using batteries. Having the chance to have both a Line In & Line Out is also really great ! My only wish would be to have a little more gain on channel 2 but I still love it enough to be a 5 on 5 !

[1x 12" Cone] I thought I'd use this for both practicing my bass, and listening to tunes. I found that the unit dosn't get loud enough for listening to music through the speakers. I returned the Bass Pack, which includes the extension speaker and power supply, and ordered the single FLY3Bass, which I love. I practice my bass with mp3 files of my band minus bass. Especially good when using headphones.

[Steel] This purchase was of  the combo six watt. Came promptly, carefully packed. Completed connections and WOW, this is fun!
Brought some Tom Petty tunes to play along with by way of the line in and the tone is really good for such a tiny unit. Petty sounded like Petty and me-forever trying. Played with a Strat the amp enhances the articulation as in hearing the attack of finger tips. Amping humbuckers is very smooth.
Jammed with my son, he had my previous best purchase an HT1R combo, woke the house up. That jam only had the main unit so with 3 watts Fly3 and 1 watt HT1R 4 little watts was loud!
The 3 inch speaker doesn’t move much air but it close mics well, can’t say it would sound bad on a pro recording .
The tone control isn’t gimmicky, to me Brit way is cleaner, american way warmer but the is definitely a nice difference and it comes with the turn of a knob. The delay ads a lot as well.
Very much enjoyed this purchase. Thanks

[Yes, Series] I'm still confused why there are different types of power adaptors regarding the workability of their amps of different sizes. I'd like to try them in different equipment of other makers, but am afraid of harming them. Still, this adaptor is well constructed and should last a long time. The only thing that concerns me is the strength of the cord going to the amp from the box. It's axactly like those for effect pedals. Otherwise, things look and work as expected.

[Tube] Excellent price on an excellent product. The second mini cabinet takes it out from the standard plastic portable amp category into an easy to carry practice amp with some presence. Good range of sounds for an amp of this size. This one is a different breed from the clock radio sound many other practice amps suffer from. This is now my official vacationing practice bass amp of choice.
