Sony E-mount 150mm macro with true 1:1 magnification for close-up shots

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the lens foot be removed.?

A: Yes.

Q: 2. Is there some reason that this is not listed as a "Portrait lens"? Seems like it would be marketed for that as well, considering the Focal Length and Large aperture. Makes me suspicious about the image quality.

A: This is a low (looks like nearly zero) distortion lens with 1:1 true macro capabilities. Of course you could use it as a portrait and it will, no doubt, be tack sharp giving pleasant bokeh with the 11 blade round aperture shooting at f/2.8. But it is more than just a portrait lens (on a full frame...a crop frame may be too tight), it is a true macro lens which requires exacting optics and 1:1 magnification or better. In other words, on a FF camera, this lens would be fine for portraits.

Q: 3. Will a Nikon F to Sony E mount adapter that controls the aperture in Nikon G type lenses (like the Novoflex Adapter) control the aperture in the Irix?

A: Yes you can use any of the adapters that support the Nikon G lenses such as this Metabones: https://bhpho.to/2gqoELB

Q: 4. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon Z6, using the FTZ adapter?

A: The manual focus IRIX 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 Lens for Nikon F is compatible with the Nikon Z6 when using the FTZ adapter.

Q: 5. Stephen (or others), What is the effective working distance of this lens compared to the Nikon 105G? I can look up specs but would welcome actual user experience. Also, how solid is the tripod collar?

A: The Minimum Focus Distance from the sensor/film plane is13.58" / 34.5 cm and working distance from front element is approximately 8.25".

Q: 6. Can this lens be used with Canon teleconverters?

A: Yes, I would suggest using a 1.4 teleconverter. Please review the following two adapters that would be a good pair. Kenko TELEPLUS HD DGX 1.4x Teleconverter for Canon EF/EF-S Lenses https://bhpho.to/2VRs0Nc

Q: 7. Just received my lens. Is anyone experiencing noise when changing the aperture?

A: There should not be a loud noise when changing the aperture. Sometimes they can make very quiet noises if changing a lot, say from f2.8-f10, but should be ok.

Q: 8. Is the foot on the collar arca swiss compatible?

A: Yes this lens has an Arca-type compatible foot

Q: 9. Why is the Nikon version priced at 599 while the Canon and the Pentax are priced at 499?

A: prices are the same but the manufacturer is giving instant savings if you buy the Canon or Pentax version.

Q: 10. Can this be used for video?

A: Yes the IRIX 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 Lens for Canon EF can be used for video.

[T3] The IRIX 150mm is an excellent choice for those looking to capture highly detailed, true-to-life close-ups. Its magnification ratio means you can get incredibly close to your subjects, rendering them in life-size on the screen, which is perfect for both professional and creative projects. The T3.0 aperture ensures that you have flexibility with light, working well in both bright outdoor settings and more controlled indoor environments.

This lens is built to last, with a robust, weather-sealed construction that can handle a variety of shooting conditions without breaking a sweat. The focus and aperture adjustments are smooth and precise, which is crucial for making those critical, on-the-fly changes during a shoot.

Image quality is where this lens truly shines, delivering sharp, clear visuals with beautiful background blur that helps your subject stand out. It's equipped with features like geared rings that are compatible with follow-focus systems, making it an excellent fit for professional video production.

While it's a bit heavier and requires manual focus, the quality and versatility it offers make it a worthy addition to your kit. Overall, the IRIX is a solid investment for filmmakers and videographers seeking exceptional detail and build quality in their work.

[T32] The image shows a close up of a Lego set using the IRIX 150mm lens. In that picture you can see the small rigs in the gray plastic that is not visible by just looking at it.

[Full Frame] What this LENS CAN DO IN Macro is MINDBLOWING!

[Sony E] For the price, this lens rocks! If it were three times the price it would still rock! There’s plenty of YouTube video reviews of technical specs, but creatively, I found that this lens gave me a cinematic (subjective, I know), shallow depth of field with crisp focus. Definitely need a focus-puller and stability, but even without the latter, you can pull off some interesting shots. This will be a holy grail lens for product filmmakers, but it’s extremely capable of pulling off some narrative shots.

[Imperial] I've been shooting with this lens on my RED Helium, but I also use it for stills with my A7III. The focus throw is smooth and long, and there is little breathing between short distances or between long distances (although, as expected, if you pull from a couple inches away to infinity, there is a transition where it breathes heavily). It feels well made and the images are very sharp.

[T3] I purchased the IRIX 15mm, 45mm, and 150mm as a set. The image quality is sharp and excellent, the focus and t-stop rings work smoothly and quietly, and the build quality is first class and aesthetically beautiful. I particularly like the water sealing most other brand lenses in this price range do not have. Focus breathing varies between the lenses but minimally and I'm quite happy with them. As other reviewers have mentioned, the curved lens cap is the only disadvantage, preventing positioning any lens face down on a surface with the lens cap on, but that's a minor issue against the superb overall package these lenses provide.

[11, Rounded] I shoot surgical/medical and thus needed that reach (compared to the Rokinon 100mm macro I was using before) in order to remain non-invasive to a health care professional's space. I also wanted a cine version of a macro so this was perfect and really there is no other option other than another 100mm macro cine lens.
The images coming from my Fuji X-T3 with this lens are fantastic (rigged as shown using an EF to X-mount adapter). Feels like a solid lens. Not a fan of the magnetic hood but I use a matte box so no biggie. Lens cap and mount cover do suck, they feel like they could break from a drop. Focus ring is smooth but the iris ring is much looser in comparison, I wish they had the same tension.

[43.3 mm] It holds 6-7 cards plus 4-5 notes. Easy to access any card you need while keeping the overall thickness very low. Like the design.

[11, Rounded] Excellent for detail shots. It works as a telephoto lens but focus pull is way to fine beyond a couple of feet away from subject to really rack focus, so I would not recommend using this as a telephoto unless you can fix focus. No complaints as a macro lens though.
