Q: 1. would this item be acceptable to view photo negatives?

A: I have never used it for the purpose of viewing negatives but my assumption is that it would work but I'm not sure that it would be the best solution. Negatives tend to curl and this item has no capability to hold the negative flat. It may prove cumbersome at best. Great for slides though.

Q: 2. How does this compare to the eye direct?

A: It's a decent option for an inexpensive system, but the Eyedirect system is an entirely different level of craftsmanship and design. Both have their own levels and if your project is simple and you're looking to stay within a conservative budget, then the Glide Gear will be a decent choice.
