This lens features a relatively fast T4.3 maximum aperture and can be stopped down to T22.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can anyone tell me how to read/use the hyperfocal scale on this lens? I know what hyperfocal focus is and on most other lenses I know how to use it, but the scale on this lens is truly perplexing to me - specifically, why are there multiple aperture values on both the left and right sides of the centre mark? And there's also another hyperfocal marker above the distances as you approach the infinity mark. So far I've only been able to test it visually by taking the same photo at different focus values and comparing them on my computer to see which are the most in-focus. This is by no means a very technical approach to achieving the proper focus, so I'm very interested in learning how to properly use the hyperfocal scale on this lens. Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide!

A: The aperture scales on the left and right of the focus mark indicate the approximate distances from the focal plane of the camera within which the image will be acceptable sharp at the current focus setting. It's referred to as a depth of field scale. The hyperfocal scale allows you to set your focus to the approximate hyperfocal distance for your current aperture, by aligning the f/number on the scale with the center focus mark. Irix has a good article on their site explaining DoF, hyperfocal distance and how to use both scales.

Q: 2. Can someone please explain or help me to understand how to read the hyperfocal scale on this lens? I have never had a problem using hyperfocal scales on any of my other lenses, but this one is quite perplexing to me, there are so many values on it.

A: If you are old school and know how to use the hyperfocal scale on manual lenses, then work as you have before. If you wish, you can also use the innovative hyperfocal indication line but really it is meant for others. That is because, ever since auto focus lenses came into use, they have mostly come without manual aperture scales since they had no place for the scales to be applied. Therefore a generation of photographers has grown up not knowing what they are for or how to use them. With Irix's hyperfocal line, the new user determines what aperture they are using, moves the focus ring to line up the aperture number on the Irix hyperfocal line with the lens focus mark. Then they look to the aperture numbers on the traditional scale to see the hyperfocal distance or the area that is in acceptable focus. To old users it is not necessary, to new users it is very helpful.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with an RF adapter on a Canon RF body? I read somewhere that it requires a firmware update installed by IRIX.

A: The IRIX 11mm f/4 Firefly Lens for Canon EF can be adapted to a Canon R-series mirrorless camera, but the operation would be fully manual, and there would be no EXIF data. No firmware update is needed since it is entirely manual.

Q: 4. Can the aperture be controlled by a dead adapter like the FotodioX Pro TLT ROKR Tilt-Shift Adapter for Nikon F Lens to Sony E?

A: The aperture in the IRIX 11mm f/4 Firefly Lens is only controlled electronically. So the Fotodiox tilt/shift adapter would not be able to control the aperture.

Q: 5. Can we get ND filter for this lense ?

A: Yes, But a adapters are needed. Please look into the following item. Cokin Universal X-Pro Series Filter Holder Adapter Ring https://bhpho.to/37clouY Cokin X-Pro Series Filter Holder https://bhpho.to/3C9fTLZ

Q: 6. Is this wide angle cine lens a Rectilinear lens or a Fish Eye lens? Mount Nikon Z, Focus Scale Metric, 11mm

A: The IRIX 11mm T4.3 Cine Lens (Z-Mount, Meters) is an Ultra-wide angle lens.

Q: 7. Would the Sigma MC-11 adapter for Canon EF to Sony E mount work on this lens?

A: Yes the IRIX 11mm f/4 Firefly Lens for Canon EF compatible with the MC11.

Q: 8. Would this 11mm be equivalent to a 24mm on Super35 sensor, specifically the Blackmagic 6K Pro?

A: Used on the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (Canon EF) (B&H# BL6KPKCAMP) with its 1.6X crop-sized APS-C sensor, the IRIX 15mm T2.6 Cine Lens (Canon EF, Feet) (B&H# IRC15EFI) will render a field of view that is equivalent in its effective focal length to using a 24mm lens on a full frame sensor-equipped camera body. If you instead opt to use the IRIX 11mm T4.3 Cine Lens (Canon EF, Feet) (B&H# IRC11EFI) with that same camera then the field of view in terms of its its effective focal length would be equivalent to using an 18mm lens on a full frame sensor-equipped camera body.

Q: 9. Does this support the manual focus confirmation with recent DSLRs?

A: Yes, it does.

Q: 10. What is the difference between Firefly lens vs Blackstone lens?

A: Irix 11mm f/4 Firefly and Blackstone share the same specifications. The difference is in the build quality. The blackstone is stronger made of durable aluminum and magnesium alloy. The firefly lens is made of a lightweight ABS plastic exterior construction.

[T4.3] 15mm on S35 is great. I thought this would be too wide and wished IRIX made a 25 or 35 but actually to compliment the existing 45 they sell this 15 is a good match feeling wide but not super distorted wide. Magnetic hoods are cool, but not so much if you are filming metalworking - all the dust just sits on those magnets. Minor quibble but the lens is great!

[Multi-Coating] In over 40 years of industrial and feature film making, the Irix primes are my favorite series of prime lenses, favored over the big name lenses that cost 4-5x. They are fast, sharp, have very natural-looking out-of-focus highlights, and the sealing is a bonus for those like us, who shoot a lot of exteriors. Hopefully Irix will soon offer something in the 65mm-85mm range so we can relegate our current short telephoto to the B camera lens set.

[Full Frame] Feels solid, but isn't overly heavy. Image quality is great and distortion is reasonable. I shoot it both full frame and S35 and it handles both well.

As others have said, it's true that the lens cap is wonky. Apparently they have a fixed one that you can order separately and hopefully that's what will ship with new copies of the lens.

I use it via an adapter and did have a little trouble finding a friendly one. Fotodiox PL-EF did NOT work. I eventually went with some no-names on eBay that did.

[ARRI PL] But unfortunately I've heard of some of them coming apart internally. So... hopefully mine lasts, because it certainly makes gorgeous images and is a pleasure to rig and use on set. I'd compare it and cut it with my Zeiss Milvus lenses, no joke.

[Imperial] It never stoped to amaze me the kind of build this lens has. Nice big and a little on the heavy size. I will compromise well build for fragility, I may also add this has a very nice glass. Overall very satisfied with the lens.

[Full Frame] Quality optics and build. Light for a cine prime, and easy to use. Works well on our RED Komodo. Smooth focus and aperture rings. The magnetic filter system is quick and easy. Also have the IRIX 30mm Cine T1.5. We tested both lenses and found no issues. The blue infinity marking really is at infinity and the other markings appear to be accurate as well. The only complaint is the rounded lens cap that comes with the lens. We were told that IRIX is going to offer the better, flat cap they provide with their 30mm T1.5 for this and older models. Kudos to them for that improvement. Overall, this is a surprisingly good cine prime series considering the low price.

[T4.3] I've been renting cine lenses for years for some of our bigger projects but never pulled the trigger on getting one. I mean, I have the Sigma 18-35 Art (photo) lens and I just can't justify spending 4K on the cine version. But this lens comes at a great price (paid $1,200) which in early 2020, happens to be cheaper than the Xeen primes. Not to mention Canon, Sigma, Zeiss CPs and the rest. -- I've shot a few test shots and the 45 looks very sharp and smooth with no noticeable CA. Focus throw is 180° and the overall feel is solid! - Can't wait for Irix to come out with a couple of more primes.

[Imperial] The IRIX 15mm T2.6 Cine is my go-to for shooting in tight spaces, like car interiors. Its wide-angle capability allows for capturing extensive detail in confined areas, making it ideal for automotive shoots. The T2.6 aperture ensures excellent performance in low-light conditions, crucial for maintaining quality inside vehicles.

Balancing impressively on gimbal rigs, it proves to be a versatile workhorse, capable of handling dynamic shots with stability and clarity. Its durable build adds to its reliability, making it a trustworthy choice for demanding environments.

In short, the IRIX 15mm T2.6 combines wide-angle versatility, low-light proficiency, and rugged durability, standing out as an essential lens for producing high-quality, creative shots in limited spaces. It’s a valuable asset for any video project requiring sharp and expansive visuals in compact settings.
