A: I have an A9 and I do the same thing that I did with my 1Dx. I tape it on with black gaffer tape. It makes them much harder to fall off.

A: yes, it works. i use it with a hero3 and with much heavier cameras, like dslrs with heavy lenses. so far, not a problem.just keep in mind that you'll need a gopro adapter to fit in tripod screws.

Q: 10. how do I release the cup from any surface? The surface is vertical and what I believe to be the release is underneath and I cant see it.

A: There is a rubber tab protruding from the side of the suction cup (same color/material as the cup itself). Place your thumb under it and push up; the suction will release.
