The Earthworks DM20 Gen 2 updates the popular snare and tom drum microphone with improved active electronics, a revamped rim mount, and better overall performance. The mic features a cardioid condenser capsule designed specifically for recording or amplifying live drums—specifically your snare or tom-toms. The microphone features a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz in order to capture the full tonal palette of the drum.

Earthworks is well-respected for their transparent sound, and the DM20 Gen 2 is no exception. The capsule picks up frequencies evenly around the cardioid polar pattern within 6", ensuring no frequency coloration due to off-axis capture. Furthermore, the microphone offers improved rear sound rejection, so when you need to make sure your high-hat won't bleed into your snare track, or your snare won't bleed into your tom channel, you can position the mic to cut out the offending sound without changing the tonal characteristic of the intended drum.

The DM20 Gen 2 can handle sound pressure levels of up to 157 dB, which makes it able to stand up to the hardest hitting drummers. Furthermore, the condenser capsule has been fashioned in such a way that the diaphragm's innate vibration has been kept to a minimum; after the transient hits, it settles into its resting state a lot quicker than comparable mics, and thus, does not blur further transients.

The capsule sits on a flexible gooseneck that remains secure no matter how hard the drummer thwacks away. It is fashioned out of stainless steel to better withstand the rigors of the road, and ships with an RM2 Rim Mount for mounting the mic on your snare or tom.

The internal electronics have been hardened to draw less phantom power, and additional

protection features have been added to safeguard against accidental hot swapping. We all know that you shouldn't plug in a condenser microphone with the power engaged, but we also know that's an inevitability in the field sometimes. These new stacked changes make the DM20 Gen 2 more robust, more compatible, and more user-friendly.

Everything about the DM20 Gen 2 is designed for speed, and that includes the speed of set up

and tear down. The new and improved rim mounting solution saves massive amounts of time while

delivering a much better user experience. Plus, it's compatible with even more kits and percussive instruments.

The DM20 Gen 2 is incredibly versatile and is built for live sound reinforcement. It captures all the details of a condenser microphone, but performs with the usability of a dynamic mic. This makes it ideal for streaming and video recordings and also for all studio work environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I recently purchased the ECM MS2 mic and no where in the instructions or users manual does it tell you how to hook up phantom power. I have the NEX FS700 camera that this mic is for and both channels can be set to use phantom power, but that is if you are using two separate mics. How do I properly set up phantom power for this mic?

A: Phantom power will be On for both XLR inputs so just plug in the microphone in on the left channel of the camera. The microphone disables phantom power for the right capsule if it is not connected to the camera.

Q: 2. How long the battery last, I need it for a busy restaurant!!

A: A single alkaline battery should supply hundreds of hours of actual use. Be sure NOT to leave the talk switch in the ON position.

Q: 3. what is the main difference between ECM-MS2 and ECM-VG1?

A: The ECM-MS2 has Stereo (M-S) and Mono capabilities, and the ECM-VG is Mono only. The ECM-MS2 is much shorter in length ( 5.5"), making it more suitable for placing on a smaller camera and the ECM-VG is over 8" in length. Both of these microphones require phantom power (40-52 V DC).

Q: 4. After recording with this mic can you hear background noise? and by background noise I mean the staticy noise you can hear in the background.

A: If there is background noise, it is not coming from the mic.

Q: 5. Confused about correct MS config: The manual says white plug is channel 1 and red plug channel 2. But Sony product photos with camcorder show other way around. Which one is correct? I do not get proper stereo image when decoding mid side.

A: The XLR connectors for the Sony ECM-MS2 Stereo Electret Condenser Microphone are marked in different colors to indicate left and right. The red connector is for the right channel and the white connector is for the left channel. Channel 1 on the camera is typically for the left and channel 2 on the camera is typically for the right.

Q: 6. What is the diameter of the tip, for SLP calibrator adapters?

A: The capsule diameter of the Earthworks M30 is 5.8 mm.

Q: 7. Does anyone know the effect the foam wind filters have on the frequency response of a QTC-50?

A: Hi Gordon,A QTC50 with a foam windscreen will experience serious attenuation of frequencies above 20 KHz, and thats for good quality foam. The amount of attenuation will depend a lot on the foam texture and model.Hope this helps,Pedro RochaEarthworks, Inc.Business Development Manager

Q: 8. When i open AudioDesk 4, I got an error message : AudioDesk has encountered an error. Internal error an unknown driver was specified (MotuAudio System Mas MasDriverMgr.cpp, 98 [33:0]) How can I fix it?

A: Hello, Thank you for contacting Samson Technologies. For the best options available to resolving this error code, please contact MOTU for further assistance. They are the company that manufactures the software and will know more in depth about technical support for this program. Their information is provided below. http://motu.com/techsupport If you have any other questions or inquiries, please let me know at any time. Best Regards, James (Product Specialist)

Q: 9. Does this come with a microphone cable?

A: it comes with a female xlr- male 1/4 . So basically the male 1/4 needs to go into the mixer end.

Q: 10. Can I use the mic on my iphone at the same time I am recording iMovie on my phone?

A: This mic will not be available for phone calls while using a recording app.

[Phantom Power] This microphone is expensive but it sounds SO GOOD. It's like an RE20 and SM7B merged together with the sweetness of the RE20 but low end of the 7B in a perfect balance. It makes my voice sound great and does me a lot of favors. The build quality is outstanding and it feels super robust. The only minor complaint I have is that the pop filter/foam can fall off kind of easily so if you use this as a guest mic they may tug on it the wrong way and pull it off by accident if it's on a boom arm.

If you're looking for a super clean, unique sound this is the Mic for you. It's also very easy to drive with about 25db of gain needed for a healthy signal.

[Mono] I was a little skeptical before I bought it. Once I bought this mic, I realized its so good and easy to EQ that all other mics are way behind in the queue. So smooth and warm, doesnt suffer with the deficiencies of a Dynamic microphone, so easy to drive and excellent to EQ.

[Cardioid] As recommended by the sales person on the floor, following my desire for a narrow, but not too narrow angle of recording. Thank you again, B H for having someone who knows about the options available

[Phantom Power] For several years I've been pretty outspoken about preferring (any) Sennheiser handheld (835/45, 9, MD etc).. over their Shure counterparts. I've got a deep voice, but there's a significant amount of fry and rasp that comes through. (I do voice over/podcasting/comedy.. not a singer.. just to clarify).

But going back to what I was saying, the classic SM58 for example, its a good and solid mic, but for my voice.. it turns into a tug-of-war trying to tone down some of the really harsh tones that no one wants to hear for voice over, podcasting etc..

So I was pretty skeptical of the SR117.. I knew there was a lot of hype about it's flat response being extremely easy to EQ, but I've never owned a handheld condenser.

Now.. I'm never looking back. No background noise cleanup. It picks up my voice and only my voice even in a room with quite a bit of ambient sound, but it even seems to TAME some of that same uncomfortable grit/rasp/fry I was previously talking about. I don't know if it's because there's finally balance between the lows in my voice with that fry, or if this mic is just great at cutting back on sibilance.

But in either case, the amount of EQ needed to get this thing to the same ear-friendly experience as my go-to Sennheiser 945 was mind blowing effortless. I genuinely cannot believe Earthworks considers this to be a budget option, and if you're needing something for live or studio, I'll gladly throw my vote in for the hype of this microphone.

I haven't used it in a live setting, but when I turn on all of the fans, lights, computers etc in my studio.. the ambient room levels are extremely high, and if it's rejecting ALL of them with ease, I can only imagine it would handle the same feedback rejection in a live setting where the vocalist doesn't need anywhere near the amount of gain I use for just talking.

[Solid-State] Superb both on stage and in the studio. Clear, crisp, takes EQ like a champ.

[1.025 lb] The SR117 was marketed on its strength at rejecting plosives. ...It's not great at it, at best it's as good as a standard stage dynamic. SO there's no special sauce. However, you might be able to mitigate with aggressive use of a low cut. However, beyond that, I really like this mic because it is very much a blank canvas, it can take EQ extremely well and can give you some of that studio mic tone in a handheld.

[Phantom Power] I'm a voice artist and record loads of long form projects (Audiobooks, articles, eLearning, etc.), and this mic works just brilliantly for that use case. It responds incredibly well to EQ, which I apply to brighten the top end frequencies a bit, and with that on the recordings the mic sounds just as good if not better than my Neumann and MKH-416 on certain jobs and auditions. I would even say that it might be the most like me a mic has sounded in my studio.

Not to mention it's a beautiful mic to have in front of your face for hours at a time.

[Solid-State] The mic is easy to install and use. It actually makes the sound in our system seem like it is coming from the piano. You can hardly tell a mic is used. It give the most natural piano sound from any mic I have ever used or seen. Definitely worth the $.
