The Tiffen 4.5" Soft Contrast 4 Filteris a contrast reduction filter that darkens highlights while maintaining the density of shadows within a scene. The effect of a light absorbing element within this filter is apparent in highlights without requiring a change in overall exposure. Details within bright areas are made more visible without a similar effect on dark areas. Tiffen Soft Contrast filters are available in grades numbering one through five. Each larger numbered grade corresponds to a stronger effect.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

[Aluminum] This filter narrows the dynamic range of what I'm shooting in bright sunlight just a little bit. Wish I had got the number 2 filter instead of number 1, but I feel I got my money's worth.

[Aluminum] Love this filter to bring up the shadows and make the highlights glow. Don’t think that “1” is too strong.

[Aluminum] I am experimenting with this filter to see how to use it to get different results. It lowers the contrast of the image as per the description, but you can use this characteristic in different ways. I have no scientific proof, but I feel that it also increases the dynamic range of my camera sensor. An interesting and unique filter.

[Aluminum] I often shoot women who just want that softer look and no matter how I tweak the lighting, they aren't happy. This filter is the magic weapon that works every time.

[Aluminum] Helps to reduce extra sharpness and contrast .Helps to make video looks more cinematic . FX 3 seems like a right number , maybe FX2 gonna works fine also .

[Aluminum] I checked videos online about tests done with this filter to see which Ultra contrast filter level I was going to buy. I decided to go with UC 2, and now that I have it in my hand and could perform tests on my own, I must say it is pretty strong. the UC 1 is just enough. Another thing you must take into account is that the exposition can not be trusted from the camera. With this filter you have to use a light meter all the time. Because the camera reading is at least 1 1/2 stop under the real exposition. Other than that is a great tool when you are shooting video, and don't want those black without information, and you want to avoid overexposed highlights

[Aluminum] Just enough softening to relax the hardness' in a portrait. Does not create any fog or flare. Love using this filter in the studio for both women's and men's formal portraits.
