Q: 1. I have used TF-4 in the past. What is the difference between TF-4 and TF-5 fixer?

A: From PF's website; TF-5 is an extraordinary fixer for both paper and film. * Processing time of only 30 seconds for resin-coated prints, 60 seconds for fiber-based prints, with no hypo clearing agent necessary. * No stop bath necessary. Just use water rinse after developing. * Non-hardening. Excellent for use with prints to be toned or re-touched. * It is a near neutral fix that changes the pH of the film or paper from alkaline to near neutral, unlike TF4 in which the film or paper stays at an alkaline pH value. * The only rapid-fixer system that allows the print to be completely fixed without impairing the rapidity of the wash. * No image bleaching. All conventional fixers act as reducers. This means that the longer the material is left in the fixer, the more image silver is destroyed. This can only have bad effects on the image, whether it is a print or a negative. Conventional sodium thiosulfate (rapid) fixers suffer from this defect especially. The problem is eliminated in TF-5, which may offer slightly richer maximum blacks as a result.

Q: 2. is the carbon black made from burning oil or is made from charcoal ?

A: Unfortunately the manufacturer does not specify this and could not provide any info as to which process was used to make this.

Q: 3. I today received 1L of this fixer from B & Xbut instead of experiencing joy, I am greatly distressed. At the bottom of the bottle there is a lot of sediment, which is impossible to dissolve. Is this a non-suitable solution? Can I use this solution for my film?

A: Yes it is hard to dissolve. But it will dissolve eventually. Just try to get it all out. I use this with many dozens of rolls with great results. Very gooed fixer.

Q: 4. What are the outside dimensions of the 8x10" frame?

A: The Photographers' Formulary Select Contact Print Frame (8 x 10") has outside dimensions of 14x16 inches.

Q: 5. Do I need to use hypo clear with this when developing film?

A: No. I use plain water during my wash process.

Q: 6. I develop 4x5 film with Jobo 2520 tank and 2509n reel. When using a rotary processor, how many minutes do I need to fix?

A: The fixing times would vary depending on the film and the temperature.

Q: 7. Will this frame hold glass negatives?

A: No, the frame is made for thinner material and might actually break a glass negative.

Q: 8. are the powders mixed together in one container for each solution or are they packed in their individual containers for mixing in water or propylene glycol ?

A: According to the manufacturer, part A and part B of the PyroCat-HD Film Developer can be mixed in one container.

Q: 9. How long does this last after you open it or mix it. I read that its 1 week. while others last 3 months?

A: The shelf life difference depends on whether it is from-the-store-stock solution or the mixed working solution. According to the manufacturer "The stock solution which has a shelf life of 1 year is diluted 1:3 to make the working solution. The working solution has a shelf life of 6 months."

Q: 10. How to I dispose of the working solution?

A: Although it is best to take photo chemicals to a facility where they can be properly disposed of, most normal chemicals used in processing are no worse than household cleaners that are normally put down our drains. (Bleach, 409, etc.) So use reason and common sense: if you process 200 rolls at a time, dispose of the chemicals properly. If you are doing 3-4 rolls every week or so, you shouldn't worry and pouring them down the sink is fine.

[0.3 lb] Used this as an alternative to tea and coffee to tone my cyanotypes. Works great, without staining the paper. Gives a reddish brown color, if toned without sodium carbonate bleach first. With sodium carbonate bleach step, more of a straight brown (but shadow and highlight details disappear...not to my liking)

[5 x 2.2 x 2.1"] Works great with cyanotypes. I use 10 grams to 2 liters of lukewarm water and tone the photos for about 30 minutes for a deep rich color. Mixes well.

[5 x 2.2 x 2.1"] I use this for the pre-development film-bleaching method invested by David Kachel called Selective Latent Image Modification Technique, used for development contractions while supporting lower-value densities. The same formula is my print-bleaching choice, because I use warm-toned papers, and it's better than ferricyanide alone. I know I can count of PF products for quality and consistency.
